No, my friend's mac is just fine. In fact I never experienced the issues some
of you are having, but then again I paid attention to the dialogues noting what
I wanted and did not want. It is important to go slow even if you know what you
are doing as every upgrade is going to be different.

FireVolt is great. Without it, it’s surprising how easy it is to get
access to someone’s data on their Mac even if they have a password. It’s
particularly useful on a MacBook if you don’t want people having access to
everything on your Mac if you lose it or it’s stolen. And once you know
what the beeps mean at login, the process is perfectly accessible. It’s
important to learn what the beeps mean though, as I stuffed it up the
first time and had to decrypt and encrypt again. One beep is to type in
the user name, two beeps is to type in your password, and three beeps
means you are logging in. If you type the username or password
incorrectly, it just repeats the relevant beep signal.

Re: Security preferences and FileVault

2014-10-23 Thread Michael Marshall
For anyone that may be thinking of doing a clean install to fix the problem
don’t bother, it doesn’t work. Eventually I had to go into the Apple store and
they had to connect the computer to their own networks and they did something
to fix it.
Even if you know file vault is off once you installed Yosemite you will most
likely face this problem.
Right now when I go into disk utility instead of seeing the manufacturer and a
whole series of numbers as the first level of my HD all i see are to Macintosh
HD labels.
The first level of the hard drive should contain tabbs such as first aid, erase
and so forth but you only get first aid and partition.

Yes it is, and they are not paying attention to the dialogue. This happens
only I think on a clean install. I'll have to find out as I plan on doing a
clean install in about 2 weeks just to clean up any crud.

Take care.

2014-10-23 Thread Mark Adreon
I unlocked the file vault. It didn’t take very much time and Idon’t have a lot
of data on my MacAir as of yet. Not until I get comfortable with this tool.

Question? How do I know the file lock is off for all files on the computer?

Re: Security preferences and FileVault

2014-10-23 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Yes, there was a dialog during setup which asked whether you wanted to turn on
Firevolt. At least that was my experience.

FireVolt is great. Without it, it’s surprising how easy it is to get access to
someone’s data on their Mac even if they have a password. It’s particularly
useful on a MacBook if you don’t want people having access to everything on
your Mac if you lose it or it’s stolen. And once you know what the beeps mean
at login, the process is perfectly accessible. It’s important to learn what the
beeps mean though, as I stuffed it up the first time and had to decrypt and
encrypt again. One beep is to type in the user name, two beeps is to type in
your password, and three beeps means you are logging in. If you type the
username or password incorrectly, it just repeats the relevant beep signal.

The Apple genius I spoke to said that this is indeed the case. It is turned off
when the system is fully installed but it does something. It locks your drive
technically so if you are ever going to partition don’t! I know from experience
that things go very wrong.
I have even tried unlocking my drive from the recovery partition but it's still
no go. As I said, Drive still works fine but I want it unlocked as I did not
ask it to be locked in the first place.
