Thanks for your help. The problem was the one Tim identified. It defaulted to

Yes, I confirmed with a 14 word blank template document that when the view menu
displays "Hide Word Count", then there is a word count immediately following
the tool bar when navigating with the vo left and right cursor keys.

Hi Donna,
The Character count item should be a menu item. that is, if you've already
made it show the count from the View menu, just VO-space on the Character count
item, then arrow down to Word count. Whatever count that was visible on the
last viewing in that document will be the count
I expect however that the document has some content in it?
I'll create a blank document and do some testing.

Hi Jonathan,
I've been able to activate it on my iPhone using Maria's directions, but on my
Mac, the tool bar is immediately to the left of the document region. There is
nothing in between the two.

Donna,
ON my Macintosh, the word count is immediately after the toolbar. After the
word count is the region that contains the document contents. If you click on
the word count it will provide paragraph character, and page counts.

Hi,
Go to more, then keep flicking until you hear word count switch button off.
Double tap to toggle it on. The button is right before the text field.
