Hello Helga,

To be honest, I am not as immersed in the world of Facebook as I am in Twitter.
Consequently, I do not know the answer to your very excellent question.

Apple TV weirdness

2016-03-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Still trying to troubleshoot this homesharing thing. I've turned homesharing
on and off on my computer, and when that did nothing, I decided to try
re-initializing it on my Apple TV. Now, my Apple TV won't take my Apple ID and
password. I've entered it three times, so am sure I didn't enter it
incorrectly all those times. Each time Voiceover just says unable to sign in,
and prompts me to change my Apple ID or password at the website. Has anyone
encountered this? Anyone know a solution?
TIA,
Donna

2016-03-03 Thread Scott Granados
I found that interesting as well. That was my usage model for years. I tended
to keep fusion around just to browse the web. I actually used your podcast on
I think it was Fusion 3 to get started. I recently as with in the last year
and a half took a new job where we were issued Macs and weren’t allowed to
install fusion so I was forced to use Safari and now I’m finding I never use
windows. I agree on the complicated web pages and I also find the inverse true
that if there is something I can’t read on the Mac the Windows route may work
so I keep it as a backup. I also find the Mac handles java better. Juniper
network equipment that uses the java based code is accessible on the Mac,
nothing renders on the windows side. Things like that it’s nice to have both
but I’m with you I’ve moved to Safari and Chrome and haven’t been back for the
most part.

2016-03-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
Interesting that you hardly ever use safari on the mac for the web.
It's a personal preference of course, but I find that complicated and
difficult pages work much better on the mac than with any windows
screen reader.Hopefully firefox will eventually be more accessible as well.

Original message:
Hi Jenine, I seldom use the Mac side for the web, but I do have Rumola
on Firefox for Windows and it works very well. When you go to a web
page where there's CAPTCHA, a voice tells you that CAPTCHA has been
detected. As you start to complete the form, the CAPTCHA is submitted
and completed for you, deducting one credit from the bundle you've
purchased. You buy a bunch of credits, rather than pay a monthly subscription.

 Guys,

I understand that this list is for discussing Apple products and their
accessibility. Trust me, I have every single intention to tie my question
back into that aspect, so don't let the subject line scare you away.

To keep things short, sweet, and fairly simple, let me sum things up this
way. I am very interested in trying to seek other employment. Yes, I do
try running my own business, CLG Productions, but honestly, things have
not been the most successful. I'm just not sure I have the skills to run
my own business to the extent I was hoping to do so.

The reason that I am coming to you all on this list is that I need a
couple of recommendations from the Apple accessibility and usability side
 of things.

First of all, right now, I have three mac computers: a mid 2012 13 inch
Macbook Pro, a late 2012 Mac Mini, and a mid 2010 13 inch polycarbon
Macbook. All of these are currently running El Capitan 10.11.3. I would
presume that for job hunting, any of those three systems would work just
 fine.

In addition, I have an IPad Air first generation 32 gig wifi only with a
 rechargeable bluetooth keyboard/case combo.

Finally, I have an AT 128GB IPhone 6S.

My question is first of all, either for the mac, or for any of my I O S
devices, what are some good apps that I might want to start with for job
hunting? I know about LinkedIn, but I haven't honestly been able to get
my head around that web site, let alone the app. I really would need some
coaching regarding that. I'm really having to step back here and honestly
evaluate my skills. I can say, though I'm not exactly proud of it, I am
not the best at LinkedIn, which could be a major downfall, as I know so
many companies these days use it. So, on that note, if any of you can
give me some pointers, or maybe work with me at least over phone,
Facetime, or Skype to get the very very basics set up, I probably could
take it from there. I just need someone to at least help me get started.

Facebook and Twitter are no problems. I am quite familiar with both.
 Same goes with Craigslist.

Where my skills really are majorly lacking however is in the field of word
processing. I am fairly decent with Microsoft Word on the Windows side
of things, but again, we're speaking OSX and I O S here, not Windows.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Word does work on the mac, I know it does,
but I also know that there are some issues which not only can be a bit
limiting, but also can be down right irritating. Right now, I don't have
time to spend much learning an application that is only going to half way
 work, at best.

 I know that Pages is

Re: beginning of table in mail

2016-03-03 Thread Christina C.
Thanks! Option, command, up or down arrow works for me as well. It takes me to
the very top row of the column voice Over is in. So if I am in the subject
field, it will take me all the way to the top or bottom row of the subject
column, which is quite handy. VO,FN, plus left or right arrow also works and
takes me to the very first or last cell of the table. Option plus up or down
arrow does absolutely nothing on my late 2011 Mac running the latest version of
El Capitan. It certainly seems that way anyways. :)

Thanks all, I may never solve the mystery as to why option plus up or down
arrow does nothing for me and works for others, the great thing is that I can
now get to the very beginning of my messages table or the top row of the column
that I am in. It’s all good. :) That had been frustrating me for well over a
month now. I appreciate all of the help.

Christina

It’s still there, but it’s off by default. Go to System Prefs, Mission Control
and turn it back on (overlay is the old pre-spaces behaviour). Then make sure
the keyboard shortcut is in use to activate it.

To be honest I think it’s being deprecated and will eventually be killed
outright, now that we have the Today view in Notification Centre. Any
particular reason you need the feature, for the curious?

Re: Romola captcha solver

2016-03-03 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Jenine, I seldom use the Mac side for the web, but I do have Rumola on
Firefox for Windows and it works very well. When you go to a web page where
there's CAPTCHA, a voice tells you that CAPTCHA has been detected. As you start
to complete the form, the CAPTCHA is submitted and completed for you, deducting
one credit from the bundle you've purchased. You buy a bunch of credits, rather

Re: I need some help with accessible career planning.

2016-03-03 Thread Vaughn Brown
Chris,

LinkedIn is great for resumes because it does the formatting for you
and order the dates of employment in the proper order. Try Indeed.com,
too. It alerts you to job opportunities.

I will say, Chris, as someone who built his resume, created accounts
on LinkedIn, indeed etc, that this will take time. I would suggest
taking an hour or two a day to build up an internet presence. That
way it is not energy zapping. Don't try to do it in one sitting.

Do you have a GoodWell or some other kind of job search service? They
are generally free. Also, do you have a department services for the
blind in your town?

Kindly,

Amazon.co.uk and mac.

2016-03-03 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
This might be a bit off-topic but i really need help because i am very
frustrated.
I did order some things from amazon.co.uk on Monday this
week and got problems with my payment i wont go into here.
Now i have asked on their help forum and i got one answer directing me to a
page where i should fill in a form and try to make them contact me.
But the form is a bit of a pain in the backside as their are checkboxes
voiceover announces but no matter what i do they’re unchecked.
Then there is a link i can click on for email help but nothing happens when i
click on it.
I actually tried the same page in windows using firefox and something popped up
but went away when i began to move with the arrowkeys.
I used Nvda and Firefox on windows 10.
So now i am in a big mess and really do not know how to resolve this issue.
I can not call them as my carrier blocks international calls from Sweden.

Re: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-03 Thread Seyoon Choi
The easiest way to rotate in my opinion and came to known as my preference is
by placing thumb and your first finger and rotating it quite firmly. If you are
use to rotor from iOS the method seem to be similar but a bit upscaled for that

Set it up as it should be. Then, on the trackpad, do a 2 finger clockwise
rotate to enable the trackpad commander.

It does not matter the commander is already enabled in VO Utility.
Apparently, the VO keys are locked. This is noted as an El Capitan bug.

Re: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-03 Thread E.T.
Sounds really interesting. But the price. Twice what I paid for the
older one. But yes, the old one is hard to be sure its actually on.
Would have to check in Bluetooth prefs for that. I spent some time doing
this until I was sure it was functioning. Then I learned that even with
Enable Trackpad checked in VO Utility, you still need to turn it on with
the VO 2 finger rotate.

The newer trackpad is more spacious, but for VoiceOver users there’s really no
benefit, since there’s no way to exploit the one real feature it has, that
being the 3D touch feature. Apple doesn’t seem to have done any work there,
unlike on iOS. I’ll be honest, when I got mine, it was more in the name of
completeness than necessity, and although I like pairing and charging by
Lightning cable, I’d have no real difficulty going back to my old one. Having
said that, I do now make quite extensive use of the tactile power switch, where
in the past I’d have difficulty telling whether it was on or off. The keyboard
is more interesting, because pairing can be done non-interactively over USB.
Both devices can also use USB with Bluetooth off, which effectively means that
they are USB keyboards/trackpads when not using Bluetooth.

Weirdly, the 2015 MacBook Pro also has the 3D Touch feature, but it originally
came with Yosemite. The truly cool thing about 3D Touch is that you can
actually control whether or not the clicking sound is made, and whether or not
multiple levels are in effect. It is truly mind-blowing to press on the
trackpad while it is off, then while it is on, and then while “Silent clicking”
is in effect; the entire haptic experience of the thing is simulated using a
motor that produces the vibrations at each level and with the necessary oomph
as the trackpad is squeezed. Amazing. For the first hour, I just played with
it, trying to understand how the simulation could be so utterly perfect. I had
a really hard time of it, too, because it really was perfect.

This is one of the instances why I prefer Bootcamp over VMWare Fusion. I only
have 4 gigs of ram in my system too so rather than putting up with slowness, I
use Bootcamp and Windows 10 runs a heck of a lot faster than it did with
Fusion. The only down side is you need sighted help to install Windows with
Bootcamp but once it’s done, you’re all set.

4 gigs sounds typical but you can verify that in OS X by selecting About
this Mac from the Apple menu.

If 4 is enough to run both OS X and Windows, I have no idea. I also have no
idea how many windows can be open at one time but there has to be a limit
somewhere.

That's odd, I have a Windows VM on my MBA with eight gig and fusion recommended
I only assign one gigabyte to the VM. That's what I have done I just followed
fusions recommendations, and windows works fine as does Mac OS X. Course, I'm
not running any high-powered apps on the windows, just Internet exploder and a

There's that word again! Romola is the captcha solving app for the Mac, but it
isn't "free". Nothing in life is actually. If you have windows or a Windows VM
on your Mac, you can install webvisum in Firefox and that doesn't excellent
job. I use webvisum anytime I need to solve a captcha on a website.

Re: I need some help with accessible career planning.

2016-03-03 Thread Phil Halton
Honestly, as far as resume writing goes, I would google the topic and I'll bet
you'll find many great resources on the topic over the web. Also, consider
pages as a glorified TextEdit app. Really that's all it is and it has some nice
features that you can use but if you can use TextEdit, you're good to go on
pages as well. Ann's book Will help you fill in the blank's.
Finally, and this is not a knock on you Chris, but many people forget that
finding employment is not just about technical skills. Don't forget
interpersonal skills. They are just as much if not more valuable to an employer
than any technical knowledge you may have.

Or on if the moderator allows although this seems tangentially on topic so I

I need Ann Robertson's E-mail address

2016-03-03 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I need to get ahold of Ann urgently.

I bought her book through Mosen Consulting, but upon looking at the downloaded
file, I don't know why, but it has a .mp3 extension on the end of it. When I
tried renaming it just to .zip, then unzipping it, it didn't work.

I didn't save the link to the downloaded file, so I need to get ahold of her,
so she can send me another link.

Chris.

Hi Chris, first good luck on your search. Running a business is not an easy
thing. I’ve sort of felt that you have to fail a few times before you get one
that works and before you learn the hard and soft skills you need. I have
known some very good people in the business world and that’s one bit of advice
I’ve gotten frequently is don’t be to afraid to fail. I’ve also been told you
need to fail a good three times before you succeed.:) Not sure about that but
that’s sort of been my experience so do what you really like and stick to it.

That being said to your specifics.

I would definitely suggest pages. I use pages / numbers professionally every
day and it works very well. Exports and imports from Microsoft products very
smoothly as well so you should not need to bother with word or XL.
As far as resumes and resume classes go, I would not worry about the specific
program so much. What you want from a class like that is formatting and what
should be included. Some people say you should have a single page with
bulleted points and others say you should have more detail. Frankly, my resume
is about 9 pages when you include all the technical equipment and
qualifications etc. Depends on the industry. You may have a very different
resume to get an investment job than you would for an engineering job and a
music job might want a tape and not a resume nd so forth, you get that. Try to
be as target as possible.

I can’t stress linked in enough. I get a huge amount of milage from Linkedin
and you’re right it really is becoming necessary in the business world. It’s
not hard, it’s very much like the other social media sites. You have to build
a profile with your skills and experience and then try to connect to people you
know. The more connections the better because it translates to more
visibility. You can also recommend people that you know and link with and they
can recommend you, endorsements and so forth. It’s very valuable if done well.

As for the printer, not sure on the portable side. I went in the other
direction, I went for a large laser color printer that’s network attached.
Businesses are used to the high quality print of these devices because they are
shared in so many offices now. So I went for the high end presentation look.
The printer I bought regaled for $1500 or so but I grabbed for for $550 at a
liquidator in Jersey. Craigslist / eBay are your friends here. You can buy
used or from a liquidator and save big money. Others can suggest portable
models just be concerned that the output is high quality enough.

Hope that helps some what and seriously, good luck on your search.

Guys,

I understand that this list is for discussing Apple products and their

into that aspect, so don't let the subject line scare you away.

To keep things short, sweet, and fairly simple, let me sum things up this
way. I am very interested in trying to seek other employment. Yes, I do try
running my own business, CLG Productions, but honestly, things have not been
the most successful. I'm just not sure I have the skills to run my own
business to the extent I was hoping to do so.

The reason that I am coming to you all on this list is that I need a couple
of recommendations from the Apple accessibility and usability side of things.

First of all, right now, I have three mac computers: a mid 2012 13 inch
Macbook Pro, a late 2012 Mac Mini, and a mid 2010 13 inch polycarbon Macbook.
All of these are currently running El Capitan 10.11.3. I would presume that
for job hunting, any of those three systems would work just fine.

In addition, I have an IPad Air first generation 32 gig wifi only with a
rechargeable bluetooth keyboard/case combo.

Finally, I have an AT 128GB IPhone 6S.

My question is first of all, either for the mac, or for any of my I O S
devices, what are some good apps that I might want to start with for job
hunting? I know about LinkedIn, but I haven't honestly been able to get my
head around that web site, let alone the app. I really would need some
coaching regarding that. I'm really having to step back here and honestly
evaluate my skills. I can say, though I'm not exactly proud of it, I am not
the best at LinkedIn, which could be a major downfall, as I know so many
companies these days use it. So, on that note, if any of you can give me some
pointers, or maybe work with me at

Apple is very conservative with their hardware so probably they don’t feel they
can adequately cool or disperse the heat or the battery life isn’t sufficient.

I used to like the older laptops from Apple because they were screwed together
and you could upgrade your own parts. Not that way anymore unfortunately.

Hi,
Not that I know of, because capchas are made for security purposes,
they are not easily made out by ocr applications. If capchas were easy
to solve, it would let automated bots for example create accounts on

A resource I would recommend is
capchabegone.com
Although not free, this is a new project that hopes to bring capchas
for the blind to the mac in the future.
Untill then, I would just use the audio version if available

Huh. Well, I guess I'm glad to know that the problem probably isn't on my end.
Weird, though. I wonder what is causing this. It's rather frustrating, since
my husband and I decided to give up cable last November, so would really like
access to my purchased movies and TV shows.
Cheers,

I need some help with accessible career planning.

2016-03-03 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Guys,

I understand that this list is for discussing Apple products and their
accessibility. Trust me, I have every single intention to tie my question back
into that aspect, so don't let the subject line scare you away.

To keep things short, sweet, and fairly simple, let me sum things up this way.
I am very interested in trying to seek other employment. Yes, I do try running
my own business, CLG Productions, but honestly, things have not been the most
successful. I'm just not sure I have the skills to run my own business to the
extent I was hoping to do so.

The reason that I am coming to you all on this list is that I need a couple of
recommendations from the Apple accessibility and usability side of things.

So, on that note, if any of you can give me some
pointers, or maybe work with me at least over phone, Facetime, or Skype to get
the very very basics set up, I probably could take it from there. I just need
someone to at least help me get started.

Facebook and Twitter are no problems. I am quite familiar with both. Same
goes with Craigslist.

Where my skills really are majorly lacking however is in the field of word
processing. I am fairly decent with Microsoft Word on the Windows side of
things, but again, we're speaking OSX and I O S here, not Windows. Correct me
if I am wrong, but Word does work on the mac, I know it does, but I also know
that there are some issues which not only can be a bit limiting, but also can
be down right irritating. Right now, I don't have time to spend much learning
an application that is only going to half way work, at best.

I know that Pages is quite doable. Actually, go figure, after all the kabosh
that just took place on list, I have indeed bought Ann's book, and I have every
intention to start on it today; that's one of my goals on the day's agenda.
Basically, with Pages, I need to learn how to write the receiving address on a
standard sized envelope. I'm talking about the rectangular kind with the
triangular flap that you'd fold an 8X11 sheet of paper in half, then put down
in the thing, put a stamp or two, lick the seal, and be done. Also, I need to
learn how to print addresses onto an 8X11 sheet of labels that I then could
peal off and put on an envelope. I am hoping that both of these things can be
done in Pages. If not, then what do you all recommend I do which would work
with any of the macs I currently have?

Finally, I am not very good at all at writing resumes. I know there are people
I could pay to write one for me, and I may wind up doing that. This however
being said, I'm never going to learn by having people spoonfeed me. So, tying
things back into Pages, is it fairly easy to make a resume, provided that you
understand the elements which make a good resume, and how to properly format
things? Also, are there any good books on Bard or on Audible which might
address good resume writing? I'm thinking about going to a workshop hosted by
LDS Jobs, (No, I'm not Morman, nor intend to be.) What worries me though is
the fact that they will probably be presenting the resume workshop from an MS
Word standpoint, and I'll almost betcha it would be from a Windows perspective,
not from an Apple standpoint, which really is the route I'm wanting to take, if
at all possible. Ben, you've gone to one of these workshops in your area there
in Scottsdale, so let's talk later today privately about that. I'd like to get
your thoughts on things, seeing you're an avid mac user.

Finally, I need a good recommendation for a printer. I don't need it to be
bluetooth or wireless. I want it actually to be as barebone basic as it can
be. It doesn't even need to do color, although that definitely would be a
bonus. Obviously, I do not want something with tractorfeed paper. I said
basic, I didn't say ancient. LOL! I don't want an old Imagewriter. LOL! God
those things were a beast! I do ask that it use USB for its

RE: Understanding the VMware concepts with windows

2016-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
No, from my own point of view, you really don't want to try running a vm and
host OS on only 4 gb of memory.

I wouldn't try running windows on less than 4 GB infact I have 4 for each of my
windows 8 vm's but only run one at a time so the host has 4 gb also.

4 gigs sounds typical but you can verify that in OS X by selecting About
this Mac from the Apple menu.

If 4 is enough to run both OS X and Windows, I have no idea. I also have no
idea how many windows can be open at one time but there has to be a limit

RE: Magic Trackpad

2016-03-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
The newer track pad is more like the new touch pad of the mac book pros.

It's also solid and thinner with no need for batteries as it's rechargeable
with a lightening connector along the back edge.
Oh and wider by a couple of centameters
And more costly.

What are the differences between the two models? I have the older one still.

Interesting,
It's bearly picking up my two finger twist, might try pairing it again and see
what happens.

Set it up as it should be. Then, on the trackpad, do a 2 finger clockwise
rotate to enable the trackpad commander.

It does not matter the commander is already enabled in VO Utility.
Apparently, the VO keys are locked. This is noted as an El Capitan bug.

@Alex and Rick: Option + arrow up or down works - what a pitty - only in

doesn’t work on my Mac using 10.11.3, either interacted or not.
