RE: Moving between Mac and Windows, a little help please?

2017-02-13 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Sharon,

Bootcamp is the service that windows runs within on your mac.

It is the thing or application within the mac os that gives you the ability to
have the dual boot system.

When you are in windows running within bootcamp there is an option on the task
bar which allows you to restart the machine in to the Mac OS

Dependin gon which windows os you are running you may have to tell windows to
display it on the task bar as I know it's not there by default in windows 10.

This task bar option is installed as one of the apple drivers that are
installed as part of the bootcamp installation

As for on the mac os, yes when in mac os under system prefs and start up you
have to select the bootcamp option to restart in to the windows os.

I've not used it but I do know that in paralleles and I think now in VM Fusion
there is an option to run a VM from your bootcamp installation of windows,

Shame also about parallels as there is a parallels app for IOS devices which
allow you to run your vm on the IOS platform but parallels is not accessible to
us.

Hope this info helps.

Okay,

Here’s the thing about thinking I might need Bootcamp installed on my Mac:
Some months ago, I was trying to get help to switch from Windows back to my Mac
Book Air, which I now know how to do with a simple keyboard command. But at
that time, my sighted helper googled how to make the switch, and found that I
needed to use Bootcamp on the Windows side. So she went to further
instructions as to what to do with the Bootcamp there. She couldn’t see it
there, so, not knowing how to switch, we took my Mac to the technology
company I do business with. They said I didn’t have Bootcamp installed on
Windows. They did the switching for me. so, knowing now that it’s not
necessary to have this, I succeeded, again with sighted help, to see when
exactly I needed to let go of the key so as to get to the target mode. Thus, I
was able to go from Windows back to Mac using only the Bootcamp on the Mac side.

Now, the reason why I thought I might need Bootcamp in Windows, is because I
was having trouble switching on the fly with VMWAre Fusion.

So now, what I’m trying to do, is to learn what keystrokes to use. I’m still
having difficulty with the command-G, that was suggested in this thread. It
seems as if Command-G doesn’t work completely after setting full screen on the
Windows side of VMWare. So apparently, I’ll need to go to key-mapping.

Thanks again,

Hi all,

I have a very strange problem which is driving me crazy. I switched from Alex
to Samantha on my IMAC 21 inch and after switching back to Alex, Samantha and
Alex are both specking at the same time. In other words, Alex will start
talking for example if in mail and I receive a new message, Alex will say mail
then Smith will read the mail info that is in the notification. Any one noticed
this and how do you fix this problem as it is driving me crazy.

Thanks.

Hi Simon,

Thanks as always. I thought about the same thing you suggested, but I use the
watch for my work-outs, and didn't really want to go a week or two without one.
Also, I haven't research sales of first gen watches, but I wasn't sure we
could get much more than the $200 we'd pay to fix it, assuming we could get
that. My husband says he's going to try and fix it. If he can, we will sell
it. I'm happy with the series 1, and hoping that new employment situations for
both my husband and me will improve cash flow soon. So, thinking the series 1
can hold me till the 3rd gen comes out, at which time I'll probably get the
series 2, or whatever its equivalent is.
Cheers,
Donna

Just to clarify, the first generation is what I think of when I think of the
2015 Watch. The series 1 and 2 were released in fall 2016. Both the new models
have identical internals in terms of speed and power, so should respond pretty
much the same, which is faster than the old first generation but not blazing
fast. At least, that's what I've found in my limited testing (I still own a
first ten and have only briefly tried the new models).

The main things with the series 2 over the 1 are the GPS, better waterproofing,
and brighter screen. The series 1 is as water-resistant as the old first
generation, while the series 2 is good for swimming and other full water
activities which could threaten a first gen or series 1. As far as I know, the
water resistance is identical on the series 1 and first generation; the
difference between those is more the processor.

Is the series 2 worth it? Well, you could sync over some music, then use
bluetooth headphones and walk/run with only the Watch, no phone. The 2 has GPS
so will handle that just fine. It's also good for swimmers, or anyone who
regularly submerges their hands in water. But the series 1 is fine if you don't
want stand-alone GPS or the advanced waterproofing. In theory, it will be just
as responsive as a series 2.

Again, this is all just from my understanding after reading a lot of reviews
and informational articles. I use a first generation daily, and haven't found a
compelling reason to upgrade yet. But if mine broke like Donna's I'd probably
go for a series 1 since I don't do much swimming and always carry my phone.
Then I'd do the higher-end model when the next upgrade comes out. But that's
just me.

Well, today Verizon offers unlimited data. Of course there are some caveats
read more about it here

This past weekend sprint jumped on the unlimited data band wagon, but theres

and taxes are already included. Plus t-mobile removed the HD limitation on
there unlimited data plan. So whatever carrier you are with, you have some

Another thought about using VMWAre

2017-02-13 Thread Sharon Hooley
Hi again,

I had another thought about using VMWare. I noticed that there are two menus
for choosing applications. One is for adding applications you want to use, and
the other is about default apps. is it possible that I can simply add Windows
specific apps, such as individual games and an internet browser that I can flip
to from Mac, so I don’t need to make more complex moves to get to Windows in
general? those are the only two things I want to use, besides talking with
Quortana. Otherwise, I want to do most of my work with Mac.

Thanks for any feedback. I hope no one is getting tired of my VMWare questions.

Re: Moving between Mac and Windows, a little help please?

2017-02-13 Thread Sharon Hooley
Thanks for all the tips and explanations everyone. Just so you know, I would
have been okay without VMWare, when it comes to choosing the Windows startup
disc, as by can go through the motions without voice feedback, but it’s
frustrating when I have no feedback as to when to release the key you have to
hold for a few seconds to get back.

Re: Strange problem with voices in 10.12.3.

2017-02-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are three possibilities I can think of:

1. You have VoiceOVer Activities enabled with different voices. (try VO-X
and see if any are listed)
2. You have spoken notification announcements enabled in the Speech and
Dictation section of System Settings that will use the default voice for
the system.
3. You have a Script running on new e-mails that includes a "speak" command
in it.

Re: Moving between Mac and Windows, a little help please?

2017-02-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Sharon,

There are two ways that one can have Windows on the Macintosh platform and
it is possible you have both. If you have VMWare Fusion and a Windows
virtual machine in that then you can at least one way of accessing Windows.

The other major way of accessing windows is using Bootcamp in order to use
bootcamp you have to reboot your computer and tell it to use the bootcamp
area to start the computer back up. To see if you have bootcamp
implantation of Windows, open your System Preferences and goto the StartUp
disk pane. If Bootcamp is listed there in addition to MacOS (and probably
Target Disk Mode) then you have bootcamp.

In order to get bootcamp implementation of Windows to work fully with your
Macintosh you need to load the Macintosh based drivers that Apple
confusingly calls bootcamp in your Bootcamp windows.

On the other hand, if you are using VMWare to access Windows then there is
no need for the bootcamp software to be loaded on the Windows side.

HTH explains things for you a bit,

Jonathan Cohn

No, Bootcamp was not installed in Windows, as I previously thought it needed to
be. This was not on a PC computer. This was, and is, on a Mac Book Air.

As for what I’m trying to do, I’m trying to switch reliably on the fly between
Mac and Windows, using VMWare Fusion 8.5 plus,, on my Mac Book Air with OS10
Sierra.

Re: Moving between Mac and Windows, a little help please?

2017-02-13 Thread Sharon Hooley
No, Bootcamp was not installed in Windows, as I previously thought it needed to
be. This was not on a PC computer. This was, and is, on a Mac Book Air.

As for what I’m trying to do, I’m trying to switch reliably on the fly between
Mac and Windows, using VMWare Fusion 8.5 plus,, on my Mac Book Air with OS10
Sierra.

Re: Moving between Mac and Windows, a little help please?

2017-02-13 Thread Sharon Hooley

Strange problem with voices in 10.12.3.

2017-02-13 Thread matthew dyer

Thanks.

Matthew

Re: Reading tables in pdf documents with Voiceover

2017-02-13 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
Yes, they are generally much better in Windows. This is one place where Apple
has really fallen short. The topic of PDF reading comes up here from time to
time, but I have not seen a good solution to this. Simple documents are
somewhat manageable, but I too have the issue with statements.

Reading tables in pdf documents with Voiceover

2017-02-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I have a real problem reading tables in pdf documents. Various financial
institutions including banks provide vital customer related and strictly
private info in tables as a pdf download. When I open a pdf document like this
in Preview, the information which otherwise one would read in rows is presented
vertically so that if there are more then two columns it is really difficult to
remember what info follows what. This is particularly hard if there are many
rows in the table. Some info is missing or invisible to voiceover. Is there a
way of dealing with it in your experience? I've tried to convert such a
document using FineReaderPro into a different format, like docx or excel but
I've not had much luck. Are tables in pdf documents rendered better in Acrobat
Reader under Windows Os?

Thanks in advance

Andrew

First impressions of 2nd gen series 1 Apple watch

2017-02-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Just thought I'd share my first impressions, in case anyone out there is
considering this purchase.

First, I'm extremely happy with this upgrade, and highly recommend it. Below
is what I've observed so far.

The watch is definitely more responsive. No more waiting around for the watch
to respond to a tap or other gesture. Apps also open much more quickly.

I have found what David and others have said to be true re the battery. I get
up at 6:15, and when I checked battery status at 9:30, the percentage level was
10-13% higher than it typically was with the first gen watch.

I don't know if this is my imagination, but I think the speaker is noticeably
better. Speech and sounds seem both louder and clearer.

Finally, for those who use the watch for exercise, I'm getting a higher calorie
count for my elliptical work-outs. I can't imagine why this would be, but it
is true. Perhaps the faster processor is also more accurate? Whatever the
reason, I like the new numbers! :)

So, that's what I've got so far. In my opinion, for $270, it's absolutely
worth upgrading.
Cheers,
Donna

If you don’t already know about it, Vinux may be an option here. I don’t think
they use the server version but there’s lots of expertise there to help. I had

Re: Is there anyway to verify the model of an Apple Watch from the watch?

2017-02-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Yeah, Tim had it. You have to know the model number. It seems like there
should be a more direct way of doing this, like there is with the iPhone.

Re: Apple Watch questions

2017-02-13 Thread Donna Goodin

Cheers,
Donna

respond pretty much the same, which is faster than the old first
generation but not blazing fast. At least, that's what I've found in my
limited testing (I still own a first ten and have only briefly tried the
 new models).

The main things with the series 2 over the 1 are the GPS, better
waterproofing, and brighter screen. The series 1 is as water-resistant as
the old first generation, while the series 2 is good for swimming and
other full water activities which could threaten a first gen or series 1.
As far as I know, the water resistance is identical on the series 1 and
first generation; the difference between those is more the processor.

Is the series 2 worth it? Well, you could sync over some music, then use
bluetooth headphones and walk/run with only the Watch, no phone. The 2 has
GPS so will handle that just fine. It's also good for swimmers, or anyone
who regularly submerges their hands in water. But the series 1 is fine if
you don't want stand-alone GPS or the advanced waterproofing. In theory,
it will be just as responsive as a series 2.

Again, this is all just from my understanding after reading a lot of
reviews and informational articles. I use a first generation daily, and
haven't found a compelling reason to upgrade yet. But if mine broke like
Donna's I'd probably go for a series 1 since I don't do much swimming and
always carry my phone. Then I'd do the higher-end model when the next
upgrade comes out. But that's just me.

Re: Apple Watch questions

2017-02-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Scott,

I didn't know about this distinction either until I was in the Apple store on
Saturday. The long and short of it was that they were going to charge me $200
to send my old watch off to Apple to be repaired, and for $270 I could have the
second gen series 1. Once I figured out that the GPS wasn't all that relevant,
the decision was a no-brainer. :)

The difference in processors is very noticeable.

Re: FineReader OCR Pro vs. OCR Kit

2017-02-13 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I use FineReaderPro a lot, and I feel it's worth the money. You can scan and
recognise documents , it has automatic page orientation feature, scans multiple
pages, and you can convert to various formats: pdf, dox, rtf, txt, excel, html.
It also recognises documents in up to 3 different languages in one document,
which is helpful for multilingual documents.

Hi Listers,

I know that many of you love Sonos, so I thought I'd share notification of
their products price increase from 23rd of February this year. Here is a link

Re: FineReader OCR Pro vs. OCR Kit

2017-02-13 Thread Ray Foret jr
I have had some success with Abby Fine Reader in this regard. I’d go ahead and
get it because many here use it and find it perfectly satisfactory. As for the
other, I reckon you should be able to try it and, if it fails to meet your
needs, you could ask Apple for a refund. However, before going that rout, I’d
contact the app developer first and see what they have to say about its
accessibility. You can use their answer to decide what you will do.

FineReader OCR Pro vs. OCR Kit

2017-02-13 Thread Bill Gallik
I’m looking to install an OCR package on my Mac Mini to facilitate scanning
paper documents and photocopy generated PDFs. In searching in the MacOS store
for “FineReader” I got two results. The first is “FineReader OCR Pro”
($119.95) and “OCR Kit” ($35.95); my question to this list is this; is the
first worth almost $85.00 more than the second?

Have any of you had experience with Finereader OCR Pro or OCR Kit?

Has anybody had experience with both?

Or, possibly, there are yet other OCR packages that my search didn’t render;
other packages that may very well to be a “better bang for the buck” than
either of the two I’ve identified in this e-mail?

I can afford the $119.95 for the ABBY product, but I don’t really care to pay
for functionality that will likely never be used. I’m looking for this for my
personal home use so “state of the art” isn’t really essential. But then, I
don’t want to buy the less costly option only to find that it will not offer
functions such as letting me open image files online to convert to something a
screen reader can recognize.

I hope I’ve outlined my dilemma here satisfactorily and would appreciate any
thoughts, suggestions and related experiences in this matter.

Sincer thanks (in advance)

Bill
