Re: Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread Eric Oyen
Textedit can do most of that quite easily. However, you might also try the Mac
version of Libre Office. Also, Microsoft Office is mostly accessible on their
Mac version, but costs a pretty penny to purchase.

Re: TextEdit and Windows

2018-04-04 Thread E.T.

Jonathan,
My thinking is that most people will probably use the default
applications so if I were to share a document created with TextEdit with
a Windows user, it will not display correctly.

I did some digging and think the reason Notepad fails here is
because it does not support the Western encoding. It does support UTF-8
so I may experiment with the two apps.

I did install Notepad++ just to see what it's like.

There is also a one line regular expression that was once posted to this list
that changes \r to \mn or perhaps \r\n to do this. You could then used sed or
vi to correct the line endings and even create a droplet or contextual menu to
do this conversion.

My guess is that the regular expression would be:
s/.$/\r\n/

read when I googled seemed to emply that there was not a reliable way to
convert to Word and keep the formatting. Do you ever convert from Latex to

I have these installed on my Mac via Office 365. They're reasonably accessible
with VoiceOver, but I ahven't used them sufficiently to comment on any
specific issues. Interaction can be slow, however, since they don't provide
equivalent keyboard functionality to the corresponding Windows versions.
Nevertheless, navigating with VoiceOver and operating the controls generally
works.

Choosing a mail folder in Microsoft Outlook for Mac

2018-04-04 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
One of my accounts needs to be accessed via Microsoft Outlook (i.e., the
Exchange support in Apple Mail won't work with it).

Fortunately, Microsoft Outlook 2016 for Mac is quite accessible. I notice,
however, that some functions are tedious to perform via the keyboard. A good
example is selecting a folder from a list. I can use Ctrl-Option-Up/Down-Arrow
keys to get there, but typing letters when VO is focusing on the list
doesn't work. Nor does Item Chooser - it tries to retrieve a long list of
items and never completes building its menu.

Is there another, more efficient way to choose folders in Outlook for Mac?

Of course, I can always use the Windows version, but that isn't the point for
purposes of the current discussion.

Re: Trying out word and outlook on the Mac

2018-04-04 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
You can do it from office365.com if I remember correctly. I don’t think it’s
available via the Mac App Store.

Once you have a subscription that includes the desktop applications (be sure to
choose a plan that does contain them), you can log into Office365 via your
account, and there’ll be a link to download the applications for various
operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc.).

Someone who has done this recently should confirm the details. I’m not the
expert on this process.

Re: Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello Leo,

I believe you are the one who just introduced yourself?

The Macintosh has several commands in the file menu, but it does get a little
confusing with Apple applications because documents are often automatically
saved every few minutes or so by default.

There should be an export option in the file menu to save as a Microsoft Word
document. Currently I am working on an older system and I also changed my file
menu so that the that it is more like older Macintoshes and other systems with
a Save / Save As menu items. Also note that in 97 percent of Macintosh

So these keystrokes should work in your applications that are not Web based

Re: TextEdit and Windows

2018-04-04 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Ah,

I did not test with notepad, just with MS Word. I suggest you use Notepad++ my
office installed a copy of it on my system, and it automatically checks line
endings and display text correctly weather you use PC/Mac?Linux.

There is also a one line regular expression that was once posted to this list
that changes \r to \mn or perhaps \r\n to do this. You could then used sed or
vi to correct the line endings and even create a droplet or contextual menu to
do this conversion.

My guess is that the regular expression would be:
s/.$/\r\n/

Introducing to myself

2018-04-04 Thread Leo Bado

hi everyone,

I just joined this list few days ago.  For some years I have been a
windows user and the last week I got a macbook pro, so I'm totally new
on macos however I had done some stuff on this past days like upgrading
the OS to high sierra.

I think I'm learning fast some concepts but as one can expect I'm
struggleing with others.

I'm aware that ther are some books out there to introduce me to macos
system and even for how to fully use some apps but I don't think I'm
going to buy any of those sooner.

So I expect to learn reading what you guys talk on here and ask in case
I'd need to fill the blanks, of course.

oh yes, my name is Leo.

nice to meet you all of you guys.

Microsoft word question

2018-04-04 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
For those who use word on the Mac, when inserting a footnote, after inserting
it, where does voice over drop you when you insert the footnote? Does it put
you where you have to type in the footnote information or do you have to cursor
around to find that? Hope this makes sense. Microsoft word on the mac question

Jonathan,
I will need to look at this again as it did not work for me. Maybe I

In TextEdit the text I enter displaud properly. If I look at the

specific issues. Interaction can be slow, however, since they don't provide
equivalent keyboard functionality to the corresponding Windows versions.
Nevertheless, navigating with VoiceOver and operating the controls generally
works.

Re: TextEdit and Windows

2018-04-04 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

I had to do just a little bit of work to test this out…

1. In the save dialog choose the encodings menu.
2. Choose the last item to customize available encodings.
3. Make sure "Western (DOS Latin 1)” is checked
4. Close the customize encodings dialog.
5. Select "Western (DOS Latin 1)” from the encoding menu. It will probably
already be selected.
6. Now save your document.

Re: Trying out word and outlook on the Mac

2018-04-04 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi Jason, how do I purchase the microsoft 365 subscription?

Is it something I can do from the Mac app store?

I apologize in advance because this is where I don't know how to move forward
with downloading the apps and activating the subscription.

So any help in this area from you and others on the list would be greatly
appreciated!

Re: Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
It's worth noting that the user interface of Microsoft Word for Mac (which
seems to be quite accessible with VoiceOver) is different from that of the
Windows version. So, having used the Windows version before won't provide much
of an advantage in working with the Mac version.

I generally write in LaTeX or Markdown using a text editor, then convert the
document into whatever format I need. On the Mac, TextMate has proven to be
fairly accessible with VoiceOver. It was recently pointed out on another list
that TeXShop (specialized for writing LaTeX, and available by installing
MacTeX) works well with VoiceOver too.

Re: Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Brian,

You should have Pages already on your Mac and it does everything you need for
writing papers. I find it easier to use than MS Word but that may be because
I’m not used to using Word, not having been a Windows user.
In Pages, you can set up to 8 shortcuts for applying styles, be they character
or paragraph styles which can save a lot of time.
Cheers,

Anne

2018-04-04 Thread Scott Berry
Hello there,

There are a couple of good ones. You of course have your Microsoft products
which are now very accessible. You also have Nisus Writer which can be found
at:

www.nisus.com . They are great people and very
responsive if one needs help.

Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
What accessible word processors do you recommend for the mac? This is
particularly for writing papers with paragraph styles, headings, footnotes,
etc. Trying to find an accessible straightforward easy to use word processor.
Thanks,
Brian
