Re: Question about making phone calls through FaceTime

Once you’ve connected to your bank, hit VO-Shift-Space. This seems to get
focus, and then you can enter the numbers like normal.

Hi all,

When making a phone call through my iPhone in FaceTime on my Mac, is there a

entered on the keypad?

It used to be possible to enter numbers on the number row on the keyboard, but
it seems that in High Sierra this no longer works.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi,

Yes, in Preview, you are able to sign with your finger directly on the
Trackpad. The difficulty arises in the location of the signature. I've always
used sighted assistance to ensure that the signature is properly placed, as I'm
not sure that it would automatically be able to do that.

Hi,

I think that Jonathan is onto something with his response. In regular
documents, in most cases, the headings and such that are in all caps, still
read as the word as opposed to the spelled out cap letters, whereas on the Net
and in some pdf's, it is read out as Steve explains. For the most part, I've
just lived with it as an idiosyncrasy.

On a website it sounds more like the vo config and how it's setup to do the job
you want it to do,

But the cause is the fonts / styles in the webpage
I'd say if anything VO is doing what you've set it up for and because webpages
are different in how the CSS is configured or set it's making the changes in
speech you hear.

Re: signing a document in word

2018-04-20 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Yes, in Preview, you are able to sign with your finger directly on the
Trackpad. The difficulty arises in the location of the signature. I've always
used sighted assistance to ensure that the signature is properly placed, as I'm
not sure that it would automatically be able to do that.

Re: Question about VoiceOver and words in all capital letters

2018-04-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
An interesting parallel discussion in WEB AIM where somebody wanted to make
sure “N” followed by “E” would be pronounced as separate characters.

Who things to notice here:
1. the quoted word in Voice Over (El Capitan ) is spelled out.
2. The technique of inserting pseudo elements with ARIA into the middle of a
stream of characters.
—

Hi,
As others have already pointed out, I don't recommend this except in some very
rare circumstances.

ARIA was mentioned as a fix for this, but the recommended ways of doing this
may be problematic across various platforms where support levels differ, so
here is one that works more reliably.

The trick here is to use aria-owns to change the accessibility tree without
impacting the DOM, like so. This changes "BEG" to "B E G", however it has no
impact on the DOM or the styling of the visible text.

BEG

Then the following can be appended to the end of the body element so nobody
will notice it.

This appends a space character at the end of the B and E letters in the
accessibility tree, and this is what causes the separation to occur between
them.

A few notes about this: Unlike other ARIA attributes like aria-labelledby or
aria-describedby which can reference hidden elements, aria-owns doesn't work
like this and won't render hidden elements. Also this technique should never be
used on elements that don't support children like IMG elements or input
elements, because this forces the accessibility tree to change and any content
that is referenced like this will disappear and become impossible to navigate
and interact with normally. Also using this method should never be used to move
focusable interactive elements around because this does not change the tab
order. The use of aria-owns cannot reference the same ID from different
attributes, so each referenced node has to be different as shown above.

All the best,
Bryan

But that's single letters. Whenever I run into something in all

double-height double-wide font that says "big big savings" or
something similar, I hear this:

B I G  S A V I N G S

you refer is only for single letters. The above examples are the
kinds of things I want eliminated.

Re: Question about VoiceOver and words in all capital letters

2018-04-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
That might have to do with how CSS is set up for those advertisements. If I
type BIG SAVINGS my VoiceOVer reads the words and not the letters. Though while
typing it it spoke the letters.

I have on occasion put a word into the pronunciation dictionary that did not
handle the speaking of letters vs speaking of word pronunciation the way I
wanted it to. And then while doing HTML editing I added
The string indicating the beginning of a HTML comment to say HTML comment. I
can remember off hand if I added the equivalent dictionary entry for the end of
comment marker.

Best Wishes,

Jonathan

Re: signing a document in word

2018-04-20 Thread Jonathan Cohn
hello,

Preview is supposed to have a sign document functionality.
I don’t remember exactly how it works, but my El Capitan system does have

Tools->Annotate->Signatures->manage Signatures

menu item.

I believe that Tidbits might have described how to do this also in a article
about a year and a half ago.

Best Wishes,

signing a document in word

2018-04-20 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Listers,

I urgently need a solution to a problem with a word document.

I've got 2 job application cover letters and CV to submit before the end of
today

Problem is that the cover letters have been written in MS Word 2016 on a
windows notebook

Now because I don't have access to a working printer / scanner to print the
letter and sign it then scan it to PDF

I need a solution to being able to sign the cover letters,

One option I can try is to sign it on my ipad but currently I don't have word
setup or a stylus to sign with but guess finger would do fine.

Anyone else got any other possible solutions.
Anything would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi guys:

Well as you all remember. I decided to cut the cord and only keep my ATT Uverse
Internet. Well, it turns out you only get unlimited Uverse Internet if you have
laland line and tv. If you just have the internet, they cap you.

Well I work from home, so work takes up all my Internet.

They will not let me bundle Directv Now, nor my cell service, which is through
ATT with my Internet to create the bundle.

aah, the solution according to the ATT reps is to pay for a land line and TV.

I am beyond angry. Sarai D Bucciarelli www.linkedin.com/in/SaraiDBucciarelli

RE: Further to earlier mail re playing audio content on my Mac

2018-04-20 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Andy,

On your mac if you do the VO + M which should bring up your apple menu,
Scrole down this menu
Should be twice and you should find system preferences
 Then once this opens,
Use your tab key to move one by one through the sys pref options,

You will find internet and then an icloud,
Or vise versa

Open the icloud preference and take it from there,

Once you have signed into that feature you should also have a table that with
Vo shift and down arrow open the list / table of different features that icloud
gives you

Go through them and see if you can disable or add / enable the ones you want /
don’t want
Tap with the space bar enables / disables.

Hope this helps with the issues and great work sitting down over a pint or 5
and playing around.

That’s all you need to do,
And slowly things will work out.

Wish I had a bar that close.

Hi Tim Steve and all who have responded to this thread.

Steve got me thinking about my particular problem, which was confirmed by Tim.

Despite getting the following message:

"Application Alert - System Dialogue - - This Mac cannot connect to Icloud
because of a problem with
meikle.ai...@btinternet.com". "Open System
Preferences of Icloud to fix this problem"

I was down in the hotel yesterday attempting once again to go throu these
steps that Tim recommended.

When I went into extras and wi-fi, the Kilcreggan hotel came up and I was told
that wi-fi was indeed turned on.

So I spent the rest of the day messing around with Safari and it proved correct
that my computer was indeed on line., and I learned a lot about surfing the net.

Tim said that the above error message can be prevented from showing up by:

"If the connection to Wi-Fi was already established, but this error message
appeared anyway, then you'd need to enter the password in System Preferences to
have it not continue bothering you. This message was fairly common in El
Capitan, especially when you didn't use your computer in a while. There should
be a button on this error message that will take you directly to the proper
pane of System Preferences, which is the Internet Accounts pane. If it does
not straight away ask you for your iCloud password, then you may need to press
the Sign Out button then the Sign In button. I would suggest that this iCloud
is likely your Apple ID, so you will need to enter the username and password
for your Apple ID to allow the MacOS to access iCloud services. As a matter of
interest, although I don't necessarily recommend it, you could press the
"Later" button in this error dialog and go on your merry way. That is, you
don't need to be signed into these services in order to access FaceTime or
messages. You can simply open those apps specifically, enter your Apple ID and
password and they are ready to use".

I'm trying to find "system preferences" that Tim is talking about and I do have
my username and password at hand, if asked for them, but again, I cannot seem
to find where I'm going.

Can someone tell me how to get to System Preferences on my Macbook and where I
should type in any details that are asked of me.

Sorry once again guys for a lengthy message.

I'm hoping to get professional help with my Macbook from SITE Glasgow shortly,
which would sort out all of these problems but I feel that by trying to sort
them out myself with your help will teach me how the Apple OS works.

Very best wishes.

Andy.

Hi,

Steve is spot on. This message is not necessarily saying that you are not
connected to the Internet, it is simply telling you that your login credentials
for iCloud are not valid at the moment. It is possible that the problem has
happened because you actually are not connected to the Internet, which would
mean that all you need to do is press VO-m-m to access the Extras menu,
VO-right to the WiFi menu, VO-space on it to open the menu, then VO-down to
your WiFi network, and finally press VO-space or return to connect to that WiFi
network. If you've never been connected to the network in the past, then
you'll be asked for the password if one was set. Enter the password and press
return. You are now connected to the Internet. You would then be able to
access FaceTime and such.

If the connection to WiFi was already established, but this error message

Press VO-m to get to the Apple menu, then just use the Down Arrow to get to
System Preferences. Press Return to open System Preferences.
You may at this point need to stop interacting as you are probably in the tool
bar. Use VO-Right Arrow to get to Scroll Area and interact. Do VO-Right Arrow
once, then type “ic” for iCloud. If you hear “iCloud button” press VO-Space and
you’ll be in the right place.
Cheers,

Anne

Yeah good thoughts,

It’s interesting that they have plans that you can’t put together in a way that
would work better for the customer,
I’ve got a similar situation with my mobile provider,

They give me what I want but for one feature,
But it’s not able to be added
If only these providers would play better with us the customers.

well, it might be time to file a complaint with the FCC, FTC and a few other
places. Then call AT and inform them that if they refuse to work with you,
you will take your business elsewhere. At that point, I am sure they will
connect you to customer loyalty dept and try to convince you to stay on.
Convince them that the only way you will stay on is if you can get the bundle
you want that allows you full use of your internet.

oh, by the way, record the whole call so that if they fail to cooperate, you
can take it to some local news investigator. The last thing AT wants just now
is negative publicity (they are in talks to acquire another multimedia company).

hope this helps.
