RE: Homekit not showing up in settings, and how do I add another person to our Home

2019-03-31 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

There is a Home app on the home screen of my iPhone x,
Could that be what you are searching for?

I didn't see a Home option in / under settings

Subject: Homekit not showing up in settings, and how do I add another person to
our Home

Hi all,

so I have two questions that are part of the same issue. I'm trying to add my
husband to our home in Homekit. I read online that this is done in settings.
But when I go into settings, Home doesn't show up. I looked through all my
apps, and also under general. Where is Homekit in Settings?

Second, if it isn't in settings, then the information on iMore was wrong. How
do I give my husband access to our home?
TIA,
Donna

RE: Job wantted

2019-03-31 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah lots of apple jobs based out of Australian citys

Would mean moving and that I’m not against.

But when it comes to programmers I’m not into it.

Accessibility would be an area of interest but we can only try by going forward
and see what happens.

I don’t know of any open positions, but you could check whether Apple is
advertising for people with accessibility knowledge at the moment. They’re
probably looking for people with programming skills (i.e., accessibility and
software development expertise), but even if you don’t have that, it would be
worth looking for any relevant openings.

Hi List,
Anyone know of a good employer that wants to take on a totally blind person

I’ve just put in a request for redundancy from my current job and now I need to
find another one.

All options will be looked into
And happy to move if the money is right.

Cheers for any thoughts.

Hello Eric,

Sometimes, it helps to bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5) and either click or
double-click with VO-Shift-Space or the trackpad if you don’t have the trackpad
commander enabled.

Re: How to work around edit boxes that refuse input?

2019-03-31 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi,
I find more and more of this inaccessible editboxes as well. Sometimes it helps
to use VO Space. In other occasions it helps to play with Tab and Shift Tab.
and sometimes it's helpful to leave Safari using CMD Tab and going back again.
Not nice but up to now I managed to enter text in all the editboxes I came
accross.
ALL the best

Well, in my case, the edit box is empty when I go to review it. And yes, as I

not accepting any input. Hell, I couldn’t even cut and paste (it would bonk as

Re: Potential bug in voice dream reader?

2019-03-31 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I have experienced this issue for a couple updates now, I don't remember when
it started. It doesn't really matter to me, unless I am wanting to read line by
line for some reason. I wrote them about it, and they said they have had it
reported to them, but they can't reproduce it on any of their devices. As with
the device that rattles until you take it to the shop to have it fixed and it
won't rattle, they won't be able to do anything about it until they can
reproduce it. I have found that the more lightly I touch the screen, the less
likely it is to occur. Also, this latest update seems better than before. When
they wrote back to say they can't reproduce the problem, I loaded a book that
was acting really badly on this iPhone 6 onto my iPhone 5, and it worked
perfectly. So, it seems to be a problem only on a few devices. Whatever.

though it’s trying to do some heavy processing on the entire 35 hour long file,
and is totally unresponsive. My only option is to remove the app from memory
through the app switcher and start over again with a fresh copy of the app,
being very careful not to touch the text area with this particular file.
Anybody found this also to be true? Again, it only appears to happen with
extremely large files.

Re: Finding modem mac address?

2019-03-31 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
Yes, you'll probably need to connect to the modem over an Ethernet cable and
use its interface to access the MAC address. Alternatively, you can use the arp
-a command from the Mac OS terminal.
http://osxdaily.com/2016/11/03/view-lan-device-ip-address-arp/
but this only gives you what you need if the MAC address of the Ethernet port
is the same as the MAC address of the modem's interface to the outside (e.g.,
the one that attaches to the cable from your service provider).

Hi,

If you can connect to the device via the web and have the Admin credentials,
you should be able to get its MAC Address via the web portal. No need for
Terminal. Either way, you're going to need to connect to it in some manner,
otherwise, you'll need sighted assistance.

Finding modem mac address?

2019-03-31 Thread 'Robert Cole' via MacVisionaries
Dear List,
I have a modem that I want to use with Comcast.
There is no sticker on the modem. It was on a piece of paper, and I can’t find
it.
So is there a way to find the mac address of the NetGear modem using a terminal
command?
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Re: Navigating with Braille Display

2019-03-31 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Also, though I have not truly had luck with it, if you use dot 8 with space, it
should work for a toggle of modifier keys. So if you want to lock the VO
modifiers
space-8-2 space-8-3 should lock the control and option keys.

Now, I need to read that page sent earlier in the thread.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Potential bug in voice dream reader?

2019-03-31 Thread Mary Otten
I agree about the document reading feature of Seeing AI not giving as good
results as voice dream scanner. I still like seeing AI for some of its other
functionality, such as the barcode reading, when I can actually get it to
recognize a code, and also particularly the short text.

Re: Potential bug in voice dream reader?

2019-03-31 Thread Phil Halton
I’m using an iPhone eight running the latest iOS. I think this started a few
iOS updates ago. All I know is it was a sudden change from working just fine to
having this problem. By the way just bought the Voice Dream scanner. Works
quite well better than the Microsoft seeing a I app has been working.

Re: Potential bug in voice dream reader?

2019-03-31 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Phil,
What sort of device are you using the reader on? With my old iPad mini two,
which I no longer have, voice dream would very quickly become extremely
sluggish, and it didn’t take a huge file. But on my iPhone 7 Plus which is now
sort of acting like an iPod, and my 10 R, I’m not seeing that problem, even
with the very long Catholic study Bible, which voice dream says takes 139 hours
to read. It takes a little while to load, but once loaded, I’m not seeing that
problem that you referred to.

2019-03-31 Thread John JD Denning
I’ve not had any items that I had to manually enter a code. Everything has been
a code that you just scan. Just point the camera at it you don’t even have to
have it right side up. Unless I’ve been so darn lucky that they’ve always been
right side up.

Here is the Apple website.

Why you should pick up the 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro instead of the new iPad Air, Apple Insider

2019-03-31 Thread M. Taylor
Why you should pick up the 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro instead of the new iPad
Air
By: Mark Linsangan
Sunday, March 31, 2019 11:41 AM

A couple of weeks ago, Apple quietly announced a new iPad Air. This new
third generation Air now features Apple's latest A12 Bionic processor, a
laminated Retina display and now supports the first generation Apple Pencil
and Smart Keyboard. But should you buy this over the 2017 10.5" iPad Pro?

The new 2019 iPad Air retails for $499 and goes all the way up to $779 for a
256GB, Wi-Fi and cellular model. We've been using this iPad as our daily
tablet for the past few days to watch YouTube videos or catch up on some
shows on Hulu, answer emails and doodle some artworks for fun. Before Apple
announced this new Air we regularly used the 10.5-inch iPad Pro from 2017
which physically looks identical to this new iPad Air, minus an extra set of
speakers at the top, and a camera flash on the back.

This new iPad Air, as we mentioned, has new internals. It's using the A12
Bionic processor found in iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and the new iPad mini 5 so
it's reliable, and fast. I didn't notice any slowdowns whatsoever during my
testing.

It also has a new display that's more color accurate and one that looks way
better than any of the previous models. It also now supports the first
generation Apple Pencil.

The two speakers are powerful and loud, as they have always been on an iPad.
But, like with most iPads, you're likely going to cover at least one speaker
with your hand, muffling the sound a bit.

The new Air also features a smart connector on the right hand side of the
device to use Apple's Smart Keyboard. We think it's the best keyboard you
can buy for the iPad, even though it feels a bit mushy at times, but for
whatever reason, this feels right to us. There are hundreds of Bluetooth
keyboards available on the market, but if you're looking for the best, the
Smart Keyboard is the one you should consider buying.

The new iPad Air is pretty great. You're getting a really fast processor,
amazing display, first party keyboard support.

Despite all this, right now, you should really look into getting a 2017
10.5-inch iPad Pro instead.

With the iPad Pro, you're getting ProMotion display which gives you a 120Hz
refresh rate versus the 60Hz found on the Air. This makes the UI feel more
responsive to your touch and has some other niceties when drawing with an
Apple Pencil.

Two, you're getting an extra pair of speakers which is notably better for
consuming media or playing music -and if you cover one with a hand, you lose
less than you are if you cover one of two speakers on the iPad Air. And,
you're also getting a slightly better rear camera with an LED flash if iPad
photography is your thing.

The difference in processing power between the A10X Fusion and A12 Bionic is
slight, but the A12 Bionic has a lead. Regardless, the A10X on the 10.5-inch
iPad Pro is still a powerful processor that can handle anything you throw at
it. From Pro apps to graphic intensive games, you're not going to be
disappointed with either model's performance.

Both models support the first generation Apple Pencil, so this is a dead
heat. Unless you use the half-inch Lightning adapter, you've still got to
hang the Apple Pencil off the iPad like an expensive lollipop stick, instead
of the magnetic wireless charging on the 2018 iPad Pro lineup.

Geekbench scores shows that the new iPad Air scored 4765 in single core and
11379 in multi core while the 10.5-inch iPad Pro scored 3916 in single core
and 9346 in multi core. In the real world, the Pro model also has 4GB of RAM
vs 3GB found on the 2019 Air, which means that more apps can be stored in
RAM, and not dumped when things get tight.

The price between the two are really close and sometimes, you can even find
the older 10.5-inch Pro model at a much lower price than the newly announced
Air.

If you're looking to purchase your first iPad and you don't want the new
iPad mini or the regular 9.7-inch iPad or just don't have enough money to
buy the new 11-inch or 12.9-inch Pro models, look into the 2017 iPad Pro.
It's almost the same price, if not a bit less expensive than the new 2019
iPad Air, plus you're getting a much better display with ProMotion, four
speakers, and a slightly better camera.

Where to buy
Apple authorized resellers are currently accepting orders for the new 2019
iPad Air and iPad mini 5.

Hey ET,

If you google Compatible products with Apple Home, one result you'll get is an
Apple page that lists compatible products.

One product that my husband and I have been particularly happy with is the Wemo
smart plug. You plug it into an outlet, and you can control all kinds of stuff
with it. It's also very easy to pair with HomeKit because you don't have to
enter a code. Many of the other products require you to enter a code, so you
will need sighted assistance to set them up.
Cheers,
Donna

Orbit reader and translating files to read.

2019-03-31 Thread Nektarios Mallas
Hi list.
I just purchased the orbit reader and I must say that so far I am very
impressed with it.
I am looking now for an easy solution to translate rtf txt and doc files to be
read on the orbit.
Most of the things that I need to access are in Greek but also in English
contracted braille.
What do people use on the Mac as a braille translator. Duxbury is obviously out
of the question with its ridiculous price.
I found the lib Louis translator but I don’t have the knowledge to compile it
for the Mac and even then I don’t know if it is accessible to voice over.
I downloaded braille blaster, but, for the life of me, I do not understand the
user interface and I didn’t find any reference to a Greek braille table.
I know there is odt2braille but I tried it in open office and it doesn’t seem
to work at all.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Nektarios.

Potential bug in voice dream reader?

2019-03-31 Thread Phil Halton

I have a very large file that I referenced often in voice dream reader. Voice
stream reports the file at 35+ hours of reading time. I noticed that if I make
the mistake of touching the text area, not the control buttons but the actual
text area, then voice dream is sent off into an unresponsive state. It is as
though it’s trying to do some heavy processing on the entire 35 hour long file,
and is totally unresponsive. My only option is to remove the app from memory
through the app switcher and start over again with a fresh copy of the app,
being very careful not to touch the text area with this particular file.
Anybody found this also to be true? Again, it only appears to happen with
extremely large files.

Re: Homekit not showing up in settings, and how do I add another person to our Home

2019-03-31 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

You need to go into the Home app itself. When your specific Home is visible on
the screen, the connected accessories will be listed. Swipe left to the very
first item on the screen. It is named "Add & Edit Home" to VO. Double-tap
that item. If you had multiple homes, you would choose the one you wish to
work with, otherwise, just swipe through the items on this screen, and you'll
see one for inviting someone to your Home. Follow the prompts.

Hello Jonathan,

Thank you so much for this. I had removed Braille screen input from the rotor,
but when I put it back and turned to that setting in the rotor, I was able to
change both input and output to French so it should work with German for Mike.
Cheers,

Anne

Re: Voice dream scanner has been released

2019-03-31 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mary,

I use Bookshare a ton. But I usually read the books in braille on my
VarioUltra. I prefer reading to listening, so I like that option much better.
If I do listen to a book, I have both the Bard app, and an Audible
subscription, so I usually use one of those options. I love the Voice Dream
Reader app, but just find that with these other options, I don't end up needing
it much.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Mary,
Yes, I noticed this when I did the update on voice dream reader, Even though it
is $9.99 in New Zealand I still think it is worth it. The more options we have
to read printed text the better.
Take care,
Petrus
