List view does all I need.

Right/Left-Arrow collapse/expand subdirectories. Option-Right-Arrow

So, basically, no.

Re: A very handy way to deal with junk mail

2024-04-17 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
I run my own mail server. I have it configured to train its filter on
all of the mail that I move into the spam folder. Anything automatically
placed in the spam folder and later moved out of it manually is
automatically trained as legitimate mail.

I would expect commercial mail providers to do the same, probably in
more sophisticated ways.

Apple has an email address that you can use to report junk mail.  All

I was skeptical of whether this would work, but it really does.
Forwarding these messages has taken me down from about 250 junk mails
a day, to one, if that.  When you’re getting as much junk mail as I
was, it’s kind of a pain to have to forward every message, but it
really does work.  It was only a matter of a few days before my junk
mail started dropping off dramatically.

As I said, I didn’t know about this until I started googling what to
do about excessive junk mail, so I thought there might be others here
would benefit as well.

Cheers,
Donna

your account password. However, if the machine is old, it may not be
running a version of MacOS that supports passkeys anyway.

I've used them on the Mac, and I didn't encounter any accessibility

This was in Safari under Sonoma.

Nor do I recall any issues with passkey creation.

Obviously, that's good for the Mac, which is USB-C only.

No - the chargers are all switching power supplies that will take

You'll need a different plug, but the charger should work.

As to the phone plan, buying a local SIM card in the country (physical

I can more than imagine switching to Android. I've been careful to avoid
"vendor lock-in" as much as I can. Facetime is the only application of
note that I would lose, and there are alternatives. Apple Music has an
Android version, so it wouldn't pose a problem.

Due to Apple's hardware quality, good accessibility, and the policy of
supporting devices longer than most Android manufacturers do, I'm likely
to buy an iPhone again next time. However, I want to make that choice on
its merits when the need for a new device emerges. The apparently
ongoing lack of support by Android for the HID braille display standard,
especially via Bluetooth, is another substantial reason against choosing
an Android option.

of future phone purchases for a number of years, effectively ruling out
Android. At this point, I expect my next mobile device to be another

I want my braille display fully to support whatever else I have, now and
later, as it's the most costly single item and I am not about to
substitute another without loss or damage to the original.

Of course, there are good reasons why other people legitimately have
different priorities. I'm merely explaining mine, not trying to

A few notes on Microsoft Word for Mac:

1. Loading large documents (for example 50 pages) is a very slow process
even on a fast M1 Pro machine. I don't know whether it's Apple's or
Microsoft's bug. The fact that Pages doesn't have this problem suggests
it's an MS-Word issue.

2. Use Print Layout, otherwise the document being edited won't be very
accessible with VoiceOver.

Apple's developers are restricting the availability of kernel extensions
for security reasons. You're using an application that still depends on
them, so you'll have to follow those instructions if you want to install it.

As far as I know, changing the security settings as instructed should be
possible with VoiceOver. However, I personally wouldn't want to use an
application that required fundamental security settings to be changed.
If you want to go ahead, it's at your own risk, and at some stage, Apple
may well decide to disallow kernel extensions altogether.

If I remember the podcast correctly, the accessory that attaches to the

Activator. Thus, all they would need to do is to build one that has a
USB-C port.

If I were considering a purchase, though, I would want to know for sure,
and with a time table if USB-C support isn't available already.

No, but I've used one of their older displays briefly in a technology

its most sensitive setting, presumably because I touched the cells quite

Side button behaviors in iOS 17

[Reposting, as the following reply didn't make it to the list - I
probably forgot the reply-to-all.]

I’m just describing how Apple works. As I understand it, their attitude
has long been that they design the user interface as they want it to be,
to provide the experience they think best, and your only options are to
accept it or to choose something else.

It isn’t like Linux, where you have much more choice (e.g., different
desktop environments with different user interfaces). They’re just two
totally different approaches to software design.

Regards,

Jason.

I also have a Focus display, unfortunately with cell problems similar to

There are issues with controls on the display as well. If I remember
rightly, it dates from around 2017.

as I have two other working braille displays, one of which is a Baum
device from 2004 that only needed cleaning and a battery replacement to
bring it back to full working condition, I'm not in any hurry to spend
the money to have the Focus display looked into. If cell replacement is
needed, the costs can grow rapidly.

I get the haptic, and no sound at the beginning, but a sound after I've

I wonder whether this change was designed to improve the speech

interfere with recognition of the first word spoken by the user -
especially if one doesn't wait long enough before starting to speak.
Apple has the data. We don't.

The haptic is almost silent, so it makes sense as an attempt to reduce
recognition errors at the start of the utterance.

Using Touch ID with sudo in MacOS Sonoma

2023-10-23 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
There’s an interesting but not much publicized new feature in MacOS Sonoma: you
can enable Touch ID to be used with the sudo command, and this configuration
change persists across operating system updates.
To make the change, copy /etc/pam.d/sudo_local.template to sudo_local in the
same directory, then edit it and uncomment the last line.
When you use the sudo command, instead of a password prompt, you’ll be
presented with a VoiceOver-accessible dialogue that prompts you to use Touch ID
for authentication.

Subject: iPhone Plus, Definitely Heating It Up: Mark is Taking a Pass on iPhone
15 Series

Hello All,

Well, I have been working with a 15 Plus for over a week. I have truly been
putting it through it proverbial paces and I can tell you that the device heats
up far faster and far warmer than does my beloved 14 Pro Max.

It's really quite interesting as I understand that the 15 Plus is just a 14
series inside that titanium case. Is this true?

Regardless, with only a screen protector installed and using a cheap $10 case I
purchased at the Apple store, using the device for any uninterrupted length of
time when performing longer tasks such as performing system restores, lengthy
GPS navigation, App updates (over 30 or so at a time) the phone really heats
up. I'm not saying it is heating to a dangerous level but I am saying that it
is heating up so much and so fast that I have decided to not purchase a 15 Pro
Max, this year.

Of course I am comparing the 15 Plus with my beloved 14 Pro Max with the same
level of screen brightness.

Okay, just thought I would pass this along.

Keep in mind, this is just my experience: Your milage may vary.

I hope you are all doing well.

The two large options are Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, of course, but
they are only relevant if you want the office applications, the file storage,

I would suggest using the W3C’s HTML validator. It should be available in an
extension for your preferred editor.
It’s also available in HomeBrew via the vnu package. You can then run it from a
MacOS terminal.

I used Google as an example. The means line break.

Re: Mac OS Sonoma: Calendar View Changed

2023-10-03 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
Two suggestions:

  1. Lodge a support case with Apple.
  2. Try installing the latest MacOS public beta, and if you can reproduce the
problems, report them there.
Realistically, that’s all you can do. The software is not open-source. Only
Apple’s engineers can change it.

Hi,
this seems to be a new bug introduced in Sonoma. Let’s hope Apple won’t let us
wait for a whole aeyr to solve it.

I additionally experience VO jumps randomly out of a day with which I was

Has anyone an idea for a good and accessible calendar app to replace the nativ
calendar app?

Thanks and all the best

It seems to me that I can no longer navigate week-by-week in the month view of
the native calendar app.

I like to use VO table navigation keystrokes to move up/down through the
calendar, just like it is a grid or table. That allowed me to jump to the next
or previous day in another week.

Now I cannot get that grid to come back. All my navigation is strictly
vertical,, and if I want to jump to the next week, I need to arrow down through
all the days of the current week.
This behavior seems to be permanent in Sonoma OS, when in Ventura it was
sporadic.
Any tips for me?

Re: Focus Issues since Sonoma Upgrade

2023-10-03 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
Do all of the settings under VoiceOver -> Navigation seem correct?
I’m not having any focus issues, so, without a clue as to what it might be, I
can’t help any further. You may need to reset everything to defaults and
reinstall applications. I would suggest taking this up with Apple support
before making any drastic changes, though. They should be better at diagnosing
the problem than anyone on this list.

Hello,
Ever since upgrading to Sonoma, I have been experiencing focus issues. I’ve
gone over my settings, and I don’t think I’ve made any drastic changes that
could account for this.
I can’t even write an e-mail without having to check it thoroughly. I do have
my trackpad turned off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best,
Suzanne Erb

RE: Creating keyboard shortcuts for iPad apps on Apple Silicon

2023-09-30 Thread 'Jason J.G. White' via MacVisionaries
Sorry - I forgot to add: if there's a menu entry for the control that you want,
then you should be able to create a keyboard shortcut for it in the MacOS
keyboard settings. I haven't used this feature, but apparently you need to
enter the text of the menu entry exactly, including capitalization, to define
the shortcut.
Obviously, this only works if the app's developers have created menu entries
for the functionality that you want to use. I'm referring to the MacOS menus
accessed with VO-M.

I'm not aware of any option to define new keyboard shortcuts - perhaps
AppleScript would help, but I haven't investigated it.
You may find that the Item Chooser menu helps in navigating to desired controls
quickly, as you can partially type the name of what you're looking for to move
to it directly.
I hope this helps. I know it isn't the perfect solution.

Hi,

I wonder whether there is any method to add keyboard shortcuts to iPad apps

If there is not, what tips od you have to improve my performance while using
these apps?

Example application is ClaroPDF app that reads PDF content.

Thank you so much

Agreed, this is very annoying. I've switched back to using control option for

I’ve done both, and that’s gotten me next to nowhere. Interacting with the
first section starts displaying something about “stay up to date with
notifications, get notified about billing and product updates, etc.
Then there’s one before that with an unlabeled image, and nothing more that I
can scroll passed.
Therefore, I’m unable to locate the search box, and the usual fields I used
to be able to find that showed me what needed updating and the like aren’t
showing up anymore.

Has anyone else noticed that since updating to Mac OS Sonoma , that Voiceover
seems to read nothing in regard to the App Store anymore? Also, no amount of
scrolling/tabbing seems to produce the search box on my end.

VoiceOver Utility -> Braille -> Displays tab -> Add button to add a Bluetooth

Subject: Pairing/Connecting Braille Display to Mac Book Air.
Hi All,

I have a display that is already connected to my older MacBook Pro. Now, I want
to connect it to a Mac Book Air running most recent version of OS. I cannot
remember where I need to go to get this pairing done. I looked under VO
utilities and was unable to locate Braille settings/displays. I also tried
system preferences under Bluetooth but I was not seeing anything that sounded
like the right setting choices.

Also, does it matter that the Brailliant Bi X 40 is currently set to use with
my Mac Book Pro? That is, it is not running at the same time I’m trying to pair
it with the Air, but it is setup and works correctly with the Pro when I want
to use it there. I hope that makes sense.

Any pointers to get me in the correct place are appreciated.

I read the AppleVis review, and it sounded like IOS 17 may still have some
significant accessibility concerns, so I haven’t yet downloaded it. Has anyone
here upgraded? If yes, how is it going?
Cheers,
