 Hi Hem,

I have used all three programs: Pages, Scrivener, and Word. They are all
compatible with VO. I also share your reservations about working across
word processors. I would say, though, that I've been pleasantly surprised
with how Pages works with Word documents. the big thing is that you have
to remember to Export to Word rather than save. I haven't tried to export
files with super complex formatting or with tables, but if you are working
with a text file, you should have no problem using Pages. If you decide
not to go that route, using word is pretty straight forward. You can find
the commands you need, along with the keyboard shortcuts, in the menus.
Note: I use Word 2016 on the Mac, not Word 365, so there may be ways in
 which that experience differs.
 Best,
 Donna

For those who use word on the Mac, when inserting a footnote, after inserting

around to find that? Hope this makes sense. Microsoft word on the mac question

me your lessons on pages? Do you have those as documents? In reading the
chapter on footnotes in pages, I’m a little confused as to how that works, but
if I had practical examples on how to practice some of these concepts, it would

Word Processing on the mac

2018-04-04 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
What accessible word processors do you recommend for the mac? This is
particularly for writing papers with paragraph styles, headings, footnotes,
etc. Trying to find an accessible straightforward easy to use word processor.
Thanks,
Brian

Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-06 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
I installed windows 10 on my Mac and then installed jaws. After installing
jaws, I activated and everything went great, however after rebooting the
computer, jaws brings up the jaws activation dialog again. It has my jaws
authorization number in there again and it tells me activation was successful,
but it does this everytime. Any thoughts on why the activation is not holding?
Looks like jaws professional is being installed and not the home version. But I
didn’t see a separate installer for that version. A few years ago I went ahead
and switched my SMA to the home one vbut jaws professional is being installed
here. Wonder if that is why the activation window keeps coming up. Any thoughts
would be welcome.

Word works pretty well. You may run into a little difficulty with complex
editing tasks, but most things will work fine. I found tables a little
inconsistent. I use custom bullets in one of the documents I create, and
there’s no way to identify with VO which one I’m selecting. I’ve also
discovered that things tend to work better with cursor tracking off. I can’t
really speak to how well it compares to Pages, since because of compatibility
and familiarity I have stuck with Word.

Excel is another matter. Maybe others who have been using the Mac longer would
be able to work with it, but I found it nearly impossible. Navigating the
screen, though cumbersome, is doable. Editing cells was another matter. I
would try to edit one and end up editing a completely different cell. I gave
up on it and imported the sheet to Numbers.

Power Point isn’t so great either. I have rarely gotten VO to speak while
trying to edit the contents of an item in a slide. I have not tried it with
Keynote. Mostly what I have to do is small edits on someone else’s work, so I
put up with it in order to insure that the file I save as a .ppsx will work on
the Windows laptop where it will be used.

I can’t speak to Outlook, though others on this list say that it works well.

As for which is best, I guess that will depend on what you need to do.
Everyone here will have an opinion.

keyboard question about running windows on my mac

2017-03-17 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
I have installed windows on my mac using boot camp so that I can use both
operating systems. When in windows, is there a way that I can remap keys on my
laptop keyboard so that in windows, my option key can become my windows key and
my command key can become my alt key? Also if it is possible, I would love my
right option key to become my applications key if possible. Thanks for any
help. Also, does this only work when I am booted in to windows, because I
definitely don’t want anything to change on the mac side. Thanks,
Brian

Hello all,
Does anyone know where I might could find a tertian template for pages for
writing research papers in the tertian writing style format? Thanks for any

2016-07-02 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello Anne,
I have the mac pages book that you wrote, and I had a question on styles. Can
we create our own paragraph styles in pages? For example, my papers for grad
school need to be written in Terabian format, and so they have particular ways
that headings need to look, so can I create my own heading 1 paragraph style or
do you have to modify the styles that are already there. Hope this makes
sense. Thanks for the awesome book!

word processing question

2016-06-30 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
Just want to get people’s opinions on what word processor is best for the mac.
Trying to learn pages, but am familiar with word a little more, and I need to
write papers for a class in grad school. How is the current state of
accessibility for microsoft office on the mac? Just curious to see what others
are using for word processing.

Re: I thought Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac was suppose to be accessible

2016-06-04 Thread Brian Howerton
Thanks for this man, I appreciate it. Did you download from the mac app store
or from their website? I did download it, but the only thing that I saw that
was dimmed was the footnote feature. Thought that was strange though, but
didn’t know if you could shed any light on this. I’ve just been having a look
around. Looks very accessible with voiceover. I am assuming that I can go
ahead and hide the ruler since it looks like every thing you need is in the
menus. Are you able to actually create your own paragraph styles like you
could in microsoft word? For example, for my papers in college, I have to
write in Terabian format, so was wondering if I could create paragraph styles
for my default paragraph style and also for my heading styles and things like
that. For citations and bibliographies, I am assuming that you have to
manually create your own citations and bibliography/works cited page. Looks
very good though with voiceover. I was very impressed. I could see myself
using this over pages possibly. Is there a manual to learn how to use the word
processor? I read the read me first document, but was curious to see if there
was a manual for learning how to use it. Thanks for recommending and turning
me on to this. I had never heard of it before. Much appreciated.

Hi Sadam,
I am trying to learn pages myself, but can you tell me a little more about
Itext express? I am assuming that it is another word processor option.
Currently, I am in grad school right now, and am looking for something that

Just FYI, if you go to the Help menu in any of the Office Apps and type

doesn’t currently work, if anything, with assistive technology, including

Re: Cannot find an accessible bible library. Need help!

2016-04-18 Thread Brian Howerton
Hi Vinny, so how would that work? I would purchase a logos package, and then I
could access it from the IOS app? This is awesome, so it sounds like that the
iOS app is completely accessible? For the option online how would I access the
books online? Is it a matter of signing up for an account once the package was
purchased. I’m so glad Logos is accessible. This is great news. Are there
any plans as to making the mac app accessible? Has Logos indicated that could
happen? I remember I contacted their sales, and the guy basically told me to
download the demo and see what I could access via the mac app. This is great
though that iOS is accessible. Thanks Vinny, would love to hear more about
this,
Brian

Can you give a little more info on accordance? I know Logos bible software

Hello all,
I have been running my mac in column mode, and when I am in mail, I can’t press
right arrow to open up a thread of messages and uncollapse the disclosure
triangle. Can someone tell me how to do this if there is another way? It used
to be I could press right arrow to open up the conversation thread and then I
could read all the messages in that thread. How would I do this? I am running
the latest OS. Thanks,
Brian

accessible media player app to play FLAC files

2015-11-24 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello folks,
The subject says it all. I am looking for an accessible mac app that lets me
play FLAC files. I have some on my mac that I need to listen to, but I didn’t
know iTunes doesn’t play those right off the bat without converting them.
Really would rather just listen to the FLAc files as they are. Thanks,
Brian

Spotify question

2015-11-24 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
I was wondering if spotify is accessible on the mac. I downloaded the app, and
tried to use voiceover keys to navigate, but did not look like I could do
anything in the app. The only thing I could use were the menus. Is anyone on
the list using spotify? Thanks,
Brian

Re: Spotify question

2015-11-24 Thread Brian Howerton
Hey Chris,
Sad to hear this. Really, I wanted to be able to access spotify for
work-related things. They have the Christian copyright licensing top 100 songs
out there, and I wanted to be able to keep up with that through spotify and
also be able to hear the arrangements of the songs on there using it. Another
friend of mine who is a worship leader told me about this, and said if I had
spotify I could access this. Oh well,

Re: biblical greek on the mac

2015-07-15 Thread Brian Howerton
No problem Andrew. That definitely helps though. Right now I am digging in to
a greek text in braille. I am very overwhelmed by the greek braille code. I
wish there was a supplemental greek braille code manual that I could use while
trying to learn Greek. Right now, I am struggling trying to understand how the
greek braille code works.

 Hi Brian,

I speak modern Greek and there's no problem with that because:
 1. AssistiveWare.com has a modern Greek voice Dimitris, which is very good,
 2. and Apple provides a modern Greek voice Melina and Nikos. Mac also has a
modern Greek keyboard layout as well as ancient Greek keyboard which you can
 add to your keyboards.

You can change both keyboards and voices on the fly.

I don't think that ancient / biblical Greek is going to work with these
voices because the letters with the diacritic marks that are used are not
recognised by Voiceover nor by any other voices mentioned above. But do
check it out yourself. you can easily add Apple's Greek voices to the
selection of voices on the mac, activate the appropriate keyboard and confirm
this. I had no success with it when I got a piece of biblical text from
 somebody.

I'm sorry not to have better news for you.

logos bible software 6 with voiceover on the mac

2015-07-01 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
I am thinking about purchasing logos bible software 6 for the mac. I’m going
to make the first payment and give it a test run with voiceover, but I was
wondering if anyone has had a go with it with voiceover. I know that a
previous version was accessible, and the sales person I spoke with was familiar
with voiceover. I also posted to the logos bible software forums to see if
anyone has had a gone with it with voiceover on the mac, but so far no
response. Has anyone on here played with it? When I get it and have a chance
to play with it, I will report on the accessibility of it. I’m getting ready
to start seminary in the fall, so being able to use logos bible software for
school would be absolutely amazing.

microsoft office question

2015-05-19 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
I am getting ready to start working on my master’s this fall, and I was
wondering if anyone knew of any good training resources for learning word,
excel, and powerpoint. In word, I have never been great with formatting and
making things look professional, and I would love to be able to get a good
handle on that before starting to write papers. I will be using the mac when
office 2016 becomes available. Right now, I am working with the preview, but I
would like to learn how to do some of this before classes start so I am not
fighting the software. Just would like to brush up on my office skills.
Thanks,
Brian

This would prove especially useful when I am in areas where Internet access

It is a shame however, that Logos is not voiceover accessible because this

Hey man,
I will definitely try to give you a call today. I got your new work number

am going to be upgrading to pro tools 11 today, and I was wondering, do you
happen to know the price of the upgrade? I am having a hard time finding it on

 Hello all,
I am a new member to this list, and I am looking forward to learning from
each one on the list, and hopefully contributing my self. I have had my mac
for a couple of years now, but recently, I have decided to switch exclusively
to using a mac. I absolutely love the OS, and that it just works. It is
such a clean operating system in my opinion. Anyway, just wanted to
introduce myself and say hello. Thanks,

a few mac questions before starting school this fall

2015-03-23 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello all,
Since I have decided to switch to the mac permanently now, I am getting ready
to start my master’s this fall, and I had really just one question I guess. In
text edit, has anyone used this to write papers and things like that for
school? Can you do headers and footers and footnotes and things like that, or
do I need to get pages for this? If I need to get pages, how accessible is it,
and are there any tutorials on using that, or numbers or key note with
voiceover? Just trying to get a good handle on some of these apps before
starting school this fall. I don’t want to be fighting voiceover while trying
to get assignments done. Thanks for the help,
Brian

Re: iPhone 4 or 4S

2012-04-04 Thread Brian Howerton
Hello Jim,
Of course I am sure you know, that on the 4S you have Siri- the personal
assistant. You can send texts with your voice, manipulate appointments in your
calendar, place calls, and many more things. Siri in conjunction with
voiceover have really changed the way I do things on a day to day basis. Hope
this helps.
