Singing the praises of FineReader Pro

2019-02-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello list,
My husband bought me a rather obscure double CD recently and I wanted to be
able to read the very extensive information in the enclosed booklet. The print
is very tiny, pale on a dark background and printed over photos of landscapes.
To complicate matters further, some of the songs are written in a dialect of
Canadian French that creates French forms of English words. I’m talking about
Acadian French. Although there were a few problems with the OCR, they were very
few and my sighted husband was able to correct them very quickly. He said they
only occurred where artistic wavy lines on the backround pictures intersected
with letters.
I’m really impressed.
Cheers,

Anne

Re: Finereader Pro

2017-02-22 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Usually the defaults work for me very well. Once you press the button to
either scan images to new document, you can hear the scanner perform one scan.
This I assume is some kind of a preparatory / exploratory thing. It also
causes a new window open. If you look at the window, you can see that you are
able to adjust certain settings here, like brightness etc, before you press the
"scan" button. For ordinary size fonts, the brightness = 300 is ok - that's
the default one. But for small fonts, I adjust it to 600. If there are any
problems with the scan, a table will be presented to you with the mistakes.
I'm not quite sure though how I could correct them. I think for those one
would need sight. On the whole, I never feel I would need to make any changes.
I'm sorry if I am not much help here. Another tip for those of you who work
in multiple languages, is that FineReader can recognise up to 3 languages in
one document. This is useful for multi-lingual documents. You have to choose
these 3 languages in preferences by checking the boxes.

Re: Finereader Pro

2017-02-22 Thread Andrew Lamanche
I'm not aware of a tutorial for FineReader.

As for your second question, once the document has been scanned and processed,
the only way to hear it is to save it in one of the formats available through
the export dialog. Once it's saved, it will open in an appropriate application
for you to read it. So .rtf document will open inn TextEdit, a .pdf document
will open in Preview, a docx document will open in Pages, etc.

Hope this will help a little.

I don't think there's any need to rescan the document provided the finereader

he has a copy in finereader format in which case there's no need for rescanning.

Once the document is scanned and recognised, you can press command+s key
combination to export the document This will open a dialog window with all the
available formats you can export into. Once you choose one and the document
has been exported, you can press command+s again and choose a different format.

Strange behaviour in FineReader Pro when recognising into .rtf format

2014-05-01 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Listers,

For a couple of weeks now, when I try to recognise into text images of files
taken scanned with Vuescan, and I use FineReader Pro to do the recognition, and
when I choose to convert to .rtf format, I get no text which I could read in
TextEdit. And yet, when I convert the same image into .docx or .pdf, the text
is there. Why could it be? I'm totally at a loss with this one. It is as if
.rtf has no text but when I repeat the export command and choose .docx or .pdf,
then I can read the text.

Any suggestions?

Andrew

You get the app from the Appstore. As for the price, I think it costs EURO 89
but if you look for it in the Appstore, you'll see the price for yourself.

Okay, if I do cmd-so after scanning, then I get more choices for formats,
including txt. And yes, I am now getting results (sigh of relief for having
spent $99). It seems a bit more complicated than using vuescan and Finereader
Express but the scan results are definitely good.

Perhaps I am not in what you call the first screen. Let me describe what I see
when I open finereader after the close, minimize and zoom buttons.

new task (but it isn't a button here), label, image source quick conversion
(all of these not actionable buttons in this window); go right (unchecked
checkbox); table (has my scanner selected but I could also select my mac); four
choices of format (these are buttons); new document (not button); scan images
to new document button document language (not button); English (button) cancel
(button). But once the preview runs and I then scan, then when I do cmd-so I do
get a bunch of choices. I'm thinking maybe I'm coming up in the quick
conversion window but not sure.

2014-04-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Cheryl,

Because FineReader Pro isn't localised into French, I had to go through it with
a fine-tooth comb and write a document explaining all the buttons and other
fields so that French users could relabel the important ones.

Cheers,

A question about finereader pro and sending text to an aplication.

2014-04-29 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

I really love working with the finereader pro for mac. There is one thing that
annoys me.

I have been using the windows version of finereader for many years, a function
that I really like is the send to function, but this function is not included
in the mac version. I wonder if you could make a script that will send the
document to e.g. textedit but without having to export and save. If anyone
knows something I would be glad to know.

Best regards Annie.

finereader pro

2014-04-29 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I was quite happy with abbyy finereader express but decided to buy pro. Only I
am having problems.

First of all, I don't see an option to scan to text which is what I often do.

Secondly, my scanner runs but I get no pages when it's done and also I notice
my scanner is dimmed in the actual scan to device menus. My scanner is a cannon
lide 110; it works fine with vuescan and runs with finereader but I'm not
getting any results. Perhaps I am missing a step.

Is there a guide for this app somewhere?

Thanks.

2014-04-16 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Alwine.

Unfortunately you can not use the pearl scanner for anything else than open
book.

I will hope that there will be a camerascanner available in the future that
works and that can work with finereader in some way. Unfortunately there are
not many camera scanners that we can use. Let's hope something will happen in
the future. Maybe it will be the IPhone in the future that can do the taking
picture job. I have played a lot with it it is nearly good enough, but it is
difficult to find a camera app that really works for us, and an app that will
allow us to save the pictures to 1 folder, and when you can easily get them
imported in finereader and finereader does a rather good job. But we are
missing a little on the phone yet.

Best regards Annie.

A scanner for finereader pro on the mac.

2014-04-14 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

Can any one recommend a good scanner to work with finereader pro on the mac.

I am scanning a lot of books, so I would like a quick scanner.

I have an opticbook pro 4800, but I am having a lot of problems with it both on
the mac and in windows.

Best regards Annie.

Re: A scanner for finereader pro on the mac.

2014-04-14 Thread Mary Otten
like to know the same thing. There are no drivers for the opticbook line of
scanners for Mac outside of a beta that they produced that didn't work except
with their proprietary and inaccessible buttons on the scanner itself. So far
as I know, these are the only bookedge scanners on the market, and this is
the principle reason I still really like k1000 for scanning. I have fine reader
pro, and there is a huge list of supported scanners that you can see linked on
the abbyy site. But none is a book edge, and I don't think any of them are even
the high speed duplex kind where you cut up the book and feed the pages in that
way.

Hi Mary.

I am not interested in a scanner where I need to cut up books, it is to
difficult.

I can not find the list of scanners on abbyy's site, could you give me a link.
The u.s. site and the european is not the same.

Be aware that a lot of epson scanners only are supported in mountain lion, and
therefore I ask, I will not buy a scanner that is not supported in mavericks.

I have seen on the internet that there exists a scanner from avision called
fb2280e and maybe one from kodak i2900, but I think this one is rather
expensive.

Best regards Annie.

I recently bought Fine Reader Pro from the App Store and with that version
there is no need to buy any separate app to perform the scan, such as Vue Scan.
It is capable of handling multi page scans, either manually or by sheet feed

I assume you purchased Express via the web? Or does Abbyy’s site detect you

As far as it’s functionality. Can you scan directly into textEdit or Pages?

Thanks.

I know what you mean about pressing the lid down to flatten the pages of a

turn of the page could also get tiresome.

shoulders and arms. Too much typing for too many years and too much scanning

Hi.

I experience the new finereader as very accessible. If you have a supported

is a major step forward.

There could be unlabled buttons but the helptags works, but most of the buttons
are labled correct. In my experience it is more accessible and easier to use
than the windows version. My only problem is that my scanner is not supported,
and it is brand new, so I will have to figure something out.

Re: finereader pro for mac.

2013-12-06 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Annie,
Which scanner do you have that is not supported by find reader? I was doing
some looking, and it appears they don't support any of the Plustek scanners. I
also found that there is apparently a driver for the plustek 3800 that works
Onamac, but I guess it is only with plustek software. And based on past
experience, their software is not good. I'm disappointed, because I love book
edge scanners.

Hi Mary..

I have an opticbook 4800, I can not find a driver that works on the mac exept
for vuescan, but it is very slow, and I get terrible scanning results with
vuescan I do not know why.

I also love book edge scanners, and there are not many of them on the market.

If you have a plustek optikbook 3800 and the driver works, I think it will work
with finereader, because this driver is just a driver without any software. I
downloaded one for my opticbook 4800 it is a beta, and it does not find any
scanner on my mac.

I found a link on that Abby site but took me to the Apple Store. And there was

2013-12-06 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Annie,
I do not have an optic book 3800. I have a 3600, which I have been using a long
time with Kurzweil 1000 on Windows. But I would like to move to the Mac if I
can find a scanner I like with this new find reader. I saw a knowledgebase
article on the plus tech website which had a link to a driver that is supposed
to let you use the 3800 on the Mac. But it uses their software. So I'm not sure
if it will work so I don't know if I want to spend the few hundred bucks on a
3800 only to find out it doesn't work. Smile.

You know, Epson scanners are supported and work quite well in my opinion. Also,
you can pick one up for around $120 or so. There are many other supported and

Hi Phil,
Yes, I know that a lot of scanners are supported. But when I scan a book on a
flat-bed the old-fashioned way, i.e. pressing the book down so as to get a good
view of both pages, I pay for it with all kinds of muscle pain in the shoulders
and arms. Too much typing for too many years and too much scanning of books in
precisely that manner, I suppose. That's why I'm bummed about the book edge
models being so poorly supported on Mac.
