Tim, now that’s cool. If I can remember those keystrokes it sure does make it
easier to get at the files and folders. However it appears that those
keystrokes are only relevant within Finder. Any way that I can set up global
keystrokes to do the same, regardless of where I am on the Mac?

Hi,

No need to make an alias. You can use cmd-shift-i to open iCloud and
cmd-shift-o to open your Documents folder.

2019-08-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I believe you are on the right track now, but what was happening to you was
that you ended up with two copies of the documents. One being synced to your
phone and another in your documents folder. In terms of incremental backups if
you are using Apple's system where when you edit a file you don't have to
actually click save for it to be saved, then the Macintosh is automatically
making a regular backup of that file no matter where it is.
Best wishes,

Simon and E.T.,
Seems to be working now. What I did:
Located the Documents folder using the Dock, and opened.
Copied all the folders and files I wanted to have synchronized.
Verified that any change I made on Mac showed on iPhone, and vice versa — Voila!
Created an alias for the Documents folder on my Mac Desktop for rapid access.
Re-built other alias for individual files so that they pointed to the correct
locations.

Thanks very much for helping with this.

Hi Dave,

Then simple
If you update a file in any of those folders then the file should be updated on
the phone or your mac as well as the other device because it's saved in one
place but shared through the iCloud drive service.

RE: Synchronizing Files in iCloud Drive Between Mac and iPhone

2019-08-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Dave,

 As you probably know,
With iCloud drive on your mac computer enabled you have specific folders sync'd
to the iCloud environment
I think it's documents, desktop by default.

I can't remember if they are included in time machine backups by default but
you could have a look at your time machine back up drive and see if they are
showing in the backed up content.

If they are included then if you put the folders your wanting to add in to your
documents folder which should be in iCloud drive then that way everything
should be sync'd and backed up as you require it.

I understand what you are suggesting. However the “fils” app on the iPhone is
the interface to iCloud Drive. I do have iCloud Drive enabled on my iPhone.

I’m wondering if I cannot have those files and folders on my Mac hard drive,
but instead have to move them to the iCloud Drive and always access them there,
whether on my Mac or on. my iPhone. If so, I’d just need to set up an alias to
the iCloud Drive on my Mac desktop to make it easier to get at that set of

If this is the case, then how would I ensure that these files get incrementally
backed up using Time Machine?

If this is the case, then how would I ensure that these files get incrementally
backed up using Time Machine?

RE: Synchronizing Files in iCloud Drive Between Mac and iPhone

2019-08-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Dave,

On your mac you have iCloud drive,
What about on your iPhone
Do you have iCloud drive synched or are you some how copying your folders from
your mac to your files application?

To me if you update the files in the shared iCloud drive folders (Mac ) then
the files should have updated time / date stamps to say you've updated them.

If the files / folders viewed through your phone are not showing the same time
/ date stamps then they are not updated on your phones files app.

Try using the iCloud Drive option under settings / iCloud so that you get
the iClud drive share setup on the phone as a live connection.

I may have mis-stated what is happening.

I have several folders from my Mac hard drive copied to iCloud Drive. I can
access those file from my iPhone using the files app. But what I was expecting
is that when I change the file either on my iPhone or on my Mac, that the file
would be changed across both platforms.

I’m thinking that simply copying the files and folders from the Mac is not the
correct approach for using the iCloud drive, since there appears to be no
linked connection between the Mac hard drive and iCloud drive.

Is that why I’m not getting what I expected?

If so, how would I be able to have files that reside on my Mac hard drive be
available to view and edit on my iPhone, that would allow them to always be
synchronized?
