Good morning Ethan
the quick and dirty method used to shift centroids in Gridmaker grids (from
one of the nodes to the centre) may work for you too...
once you have reshaped your polygon, convert it to polylines and then back
to a polygon - and hey presto centroid where you expect it
Give it a

Other objects can be selected by changing "Polyline"
to:
"Point"
"Line"
"Region"
"Text"and I haven't tested:
"Arc"
"Ellipse"
"Rectangle"
but they may also work
The alternative syntax is (with thanks to Jaques Paris'

Shawn, I have copied the contents of a response by Peter Laulund to an
earlier query that looks to provide a formula that would resolve your
problem.
I dont know enough about your problem to know if it will do the trick for
you. Please read Peter's comment about the need to calculate the

If I may add to the idea, let me suggest that you save that mapper

That way you only have to go through the time consuming bit once and any

How long was the query?
MI is probably re-running it.
I use a fair bit of thematic mapping and those workspaces can
take ages to load as MI re-creates each thematic from scratch

I picked this formula up off the list in May 1997 (I think) and modified it
to give me the

between LON1 LAT1 and LON2 LAT2 in Excel. Unfortunately, I have changed
computers and in the process lost the original message so I am unable to

The problem is not likely to be with the import, as far as I can tell MI
creates the objects in the order they are read off the MIF. Your issue is
likely to be the order MI draws them. This has been discussed on the list
before and understanding the drawing order seems to require expertise in
I have been doing a bit of something similar recently but there is a way to
show others the layout without needing a map viewer.
I save the layout window as a bitmap (in my case I am saving as a TIF) file
(File, Save window as) and forward it to the person I want to see it.

It sounds like a font problem
The symbols are created in a font that she does not have available to her
I am not sure if the MI licence permits it but if it does, I would try
installing the font file used for the symbol onto her computer
Better yet, if you are both on a network make her printer
The school webpage now requests that you use snail-mail to respond
methinks their email took a bit of a hit from the number of reposnses

One process to achieve that would be to:
If the polygons are not regions, make them so
Create the line "centroidX(obj),CentroidY(obj)"
Set the line as the target and erase the portion inside the two regions
Measure the length of the resulting line
Slow if you had more than one or
Yes, it is up to a point - the file format is the same but it does take some
fiddling in a text editor and it pays to know the new commands recorded
under v5.5 that are not available in the earlier version.
Having opened the workspace file (your workspace name.WOR) in a text editor,

Re Gridmakr centroids
Another route I use to to get Gridmakr centroids where I expect them is to:
create the grid
select and convert the grid regions to polylines
convert them back to regions
voila!

I had similar issues with conversions until I learnt enough about
co-ordinate systems to understand why I needed to specify co-ordinate
systems for layers before I started entering data.
I suspect you will find that if you were using the generic Longitude -

I have tried printing to a postscript printer as a PRN file and can view it
