Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Excel World Championship - something similar for LibreOffice?

2023-11-24 Thread Cor Nouws

Hi Mike,

Thanks - some first response:

Mike Saunders wrote on 21/11/2023 10:03:

So to follow up on this, here's a draft for the blog -- let me know what
you think! And more ideas for the "For instance" part would be welcome :-)

LibreOffice World Championship - Show us your skills!

You don't want to try with one module (at a time)?

200 million people around the world use LibreOffice to get their work
done. Some are in businesses, some are in governments, and some are at
home. Everyone has a different workflow, and we know that many great
things are being achieved with the suite.

Great things could be maybe more specified to 'wonderful productive
office work' or.. something less verbose ;)

And we want to see them! If you've done something awesome with
LibreOffice that you'd like to show off, you can submit screenshots (or
a video) to the LibreOffice World Championship. For instance:

We want to have real achievements.. so others should be able to
reproduce the submitted stuff. Thus it may be needed to ask sample files
or similar?

* Using macros to massively automate work in a spreadsheet or text document

* Applying funky physics effects in a presentation

* ...

(will come up with some later)

Let us know what you're doing, and we'll collect the best examples and
showcase them here. Winners will get a cool LibreOffice sticker pack!

and a hoody and a mug.. ?

The deadline to submit is XX. (And, of course, please don't send any
screenshots or video that include copyright or sensitive content.)

Nice - thanks,

One could also look from the other position: LibreOffice technology
allows to integrate with various other solutions. Supporting the
organizations freedom to chose what they want or stay with a current
application.

In my experience a serious migration never is a drop-in replacement of
one with another. Thus when doing a proper preparation, taking the
calendar etc. part in consideration too, is only logic, IMO.

appropriate for the goal and something that any party in the ecosystem

You may have noticed the background of the current discussion, the

Short - indeed - it is really needed that enterprises, businesses,
realize that it is essential for the product that they use, to use
supported, paid versions.

My thoughts about the proposals, are based on that criteria.
(There are proposals that I really like for other reasons, but that's
not relevant for our use case.)

My clear preference (and I see I'm not the only one) is Community edition.

And Regis' idea ..

Indeed. It is good to understand the position of the ecosystem community
members and their existential need to operate in a situation with a
healthy market differentiation, so that then feeds the work on LibreOffice.

You may have noticed my suggestion - somewhere past weeks - on a simple
but a clear change in the download, where every professional/business

in the freedom for anyone.
Sorry for the wordy explanation ;)
Would be nice to have that somehow included in the discussion and happy

The current marketing plan discusses (among other things) an attempt to
get more traction for business in the LO ecosystem for more paying

Using a label is one important idea in the discussion.

That's an interesting thought. And apart from what label to chose, one
could extend that. For example to show a clear distinction/direction on
the website. Simply say what it is. E.g.:

---

| Home/Private | Business/Organization
| V|V
---

---
| LibreOffice Home/Private

| (part of Current page)

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] The Edition Matter

2020-10-13 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi Telesto,

Let me confess that I only read a part of the discussions - I'm simply
not able to keep up with all.
But I am interested in opinions and reasons for ideas. So I have a question:

Telesto wrote on 13/10/2020 18:26:

(skipping may lines with IMO logic ideas/POVs - thanks for describing
those.)

> Visa versa bring in the commercial perspective into TDF; which of course

I'm triggered by the "Except this sometimes ..." reading it as that is
'not reasonable'.
Can you pls explain that a bit more?
To explain why I wonder: I think for sure it is not always practical or
easy, to have to work with conflicts of interest. But isn't it
unavoidable if you have foundation that hosts an open source community
where all kind of contributors are active (like you so clearly
explained). And also of course, there are more and other personal
interest of people in LibreOffice/TDF than just the fact that they earn
(part of) the living with it.

Maybe I missed some other part of your text, not sure ;0

Thanks,
Cor

It might well be that the board is open for good ideas and new insights ;)

IIRC, the policy to not compare with AOO in public, was based on the
wish to not divide the two more than was the case, in the hope that a
coming together would grow.

Looking at the current situation, I think it can be well defended that
we should change policy. And start comparing clearly (and non offensive)
to help inform the users out there.

coming together would grow.

Looking at what happened over the years, and the situation at AOO, I

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice Developer Bootcamp in Ankara - blog - people can still join

2019-11-19 Thread Cor Nouws
Dear people,

As already announced on Twitter recently, there is a LibreOffice
Bootcamp at the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey.
Mostly it is sponsored by Collabora. That is also shown on this blogpost

https://www.collaboraoffice.com/community-news/libreoffice-developer-bootcamp-ankara/
I hope that it will not prevent to share the news and encourage people
to join ;)
But interested students should do so fast.. Starting a C++ course with
more than one or two lessons behind, seems not a wise idea :D

As you can read from the content of the blog and from the expectations
of the trainer: in the end there will be many students introduced and
capable to develop LibreOffice. Which IMHO is a nice goal!

Greetings,
Cor

Yes, that definitely is something I consider to be useful and a thing I
do now and then,

> elsewhere with "Look how transparent (some) German politicians are about their

.. but to be honest, I tend to push not so much about being transparent
rather directly open source and open standards.
The example Anke gives towards the end - no clear os policy while there
is a known strong dependency on US software vendors - is well chosen.

Public administrations of course have a selective memory/view, and tend
to use just information that supports their agenda.

Task-oriented. It would be nice if there is some LibreOffice logo on/in

The wiki

A mail to legal@documentfoundation is needed?

Thanks for bringing this up :)
Three thoughts:
Initially, it can be a good idea. Maybe. I guess it can help grow
market. Maintaining lists, is often a problem we know. Especially
since... how can we find the new/existing locations?
Please note by the way, that there is Collabora Online and LibreOffice
Online. Similar function wise, but different in support probably.
Will it, when people know about it and start to search, ask at providers
e.g., have a stimulating effect?

disappointed.
And I see no improvement in the area that I asked about in my mail below.

Really nice to see this!
I mostly missed the discussion and work leading to this, so forgive me
if my question is not relevant.
Having played a bit with the choices, I have the idea that people might
need more context or extra pointers with some of the outcomes.
E.g. Marketing > Booth materials just leads to a wiki with a list. A bit
more smart landing place, with intro, pointers and advice how to join,
would make sense, I think.
But maybe this is already planned?

I do well understand that topic and your point. For me it's a sort of
little annoyance that I do pay too much attention too.
In my understanding, the bar is a step in our experimental work to get
proper attention and support for the future of the project. And surely
not putting people off, is part of that too :)

Isn't it that the user closes it with a single click?
I assume there is an setting to disable the bar at installation time?
Maybe it can be worked into a nice feature for organizations, that they
display there own message with a link to e.g. a corporate help/support
spot for the users. But ;)

I think it is interesting to get more out of the data that Mike wrote
about. With many hundreds of clicks a day, one hopes it shows up in
donations and people becoming active.
Shouldn't we try to find out how the bar is appreciated, or not, by
LibreOffice-users?

So, I do not really like it. But am not strongly against. And would be
interested to learn if it really does something (positive) and/or needs
to be in some other form.

Cheers,
Cor

Love it. I would like to breed a bit about "join our community". Could
there be some wording that expresses more the great opportunity,
enabling, to do what you want or need?

Some rough fist shots: "Do it", "Do LibreOffice", "Need to join", "Join
what you like/need", "Joining brings power/chances", ..

From the use of the header-image, we don't need "LibreOffice" in it?

Cheers,

Good idea... but isn't this palette already available in (at least) 5.4.x ?!

One place makes sense. In the calendar, are all with access to
TDF-Nextcloud able to add events?

For events, or just on the wall. Anyway, something showing the

Sure - it all depends on how the final mascot is designed. That may even

Thanks for sharing that. Obviously things I don't know. Of course in
Dutch it's not that positive, what is often expressed by 'louse', but it
does give opportunities too - if combined with a catchy, positive cartoon.

Hi all,

Last week I was thinking about that LibreOffice is what we call, in
Dutch, the "louse in the fur" of another office suite. Something that
irritates, but you can't get rid of :)
Of course that would need some excellent additional art work, to make it
funny and attractive, but...

https://www.shutterstock.com/zh/search/louse
https://dylanwoodlouse.wordpress.com/tag/louse-christmas-songs/
https://www.flickr.com/photos/nicky3zero/12532425354

For the rest I support comments that the mascot must be not too
detailed, good stylized.

I like the banner - clear design and QR-code.

Maybe you can put all elements a bit up, so that there is more empty

[libreoffice-marketing] Userinterface-Battle at T-Dose - weekend 28/29-11-2015

2015-11-25 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi,

There is this post on the Dutch language FB page
  https://www.facebook.com/libreofficenl/posts/1648165505460351?fref=nf

This weekend there is T-Dose (www.t-dose.org) in Eindhoven, where the
Dutch language LibreOffice community will be present with many other os
projects and lots of people.

Now via FB/Twitter/mail people are invited to join a GUI-battle: show at
the booth what/how/why your favorite LIbreOffice GUI setting is. The
idea is to share via social media and to learn from that what people
appreciate. Just for a fun-competition - not with any intended effect on
the UX-work. On the other hand, one never knows ;)

Cor

Subject:contact LO Belgium-fr ?
From: Abelli - agnez ag...@abelli-asbl.be

Hello,
you gave me your contact during FOSDEM..

With the Brussels based association Abelli we are organising a one day
event dedicated to the associative and militant world about free
software : Associalibre http://www.associalibre.be/.
It's a French speaking event end of April.

Would you have a contact for me to a French speaking member of your
organisation, based in Belgium? I would like to ask if a LibreOffice
info-stand (during 2h at the end of the day) would be posible.
Otherwize, if no-on can come for direct information, is there any
information material in French that I could get to hand out to people ?

Thank you for any help or hint
Best
Agnez (for Abelli)

[libreoffice-marketing] guide for scholars

2015-03-04 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi,

Recently I finished a guide/handbook for scholars: make your most
beautiful report with LibreOffice Writer - but then in Dutch.
Targeted at 13-16 years that need to write a nice, good report for some
school work. I'll make a simplified version for say 9-11 years.

Will start to promote it soon.
Any advise on how /where to fly to make this available in English too?

Cheers,
Cor

[libreoffice-marketing] preparing FOSDEM and HackFest - help appreciated now

2015-01-08 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi all,

In only four weeks, FOSDEM will be at full swing. And the two day's
thereafter, we'll have another great hackfest, kindly hosted at
Betacowork in Brussels.

Help is really appreciated. Especially to get lots of people joining.
There is an interesting busy schedule with lectures and meetings for
many people that we already know that will go. So with more joining,
there will be enough time to help people at the booth friendly and in a
relaxed way. And at the hackfest it's just a great opportunity to meet
and work with the others. So with more people more quality, joy and fun :)

How to help in this stage? Apart from of course applying if you are
personally interested: we can reach out to people that either visit
FOSDEM, or don't live too far from Brussels. Without doubt there are
people that have the opportunity to help for a few hours and are a fan
of LibreOffice. Or that can join a day at the hackfest and are
interested to help with e.g. improving the user interface or one of the
many available easy hacks.

To reach out to those, I guess it's useful to write to groups/lists in
(northern) France, Belgium, (south of) The Netherlands. Maybe there are
regional groups, meetings? Is there some forum that helps us to reach
FOSDEM visitors?
Obviously I will bring the message to the Dutch language mailing lists.
Is there anything that you can do?

Thanks a lot in advance for you help ..

[libreoffice-marketing] Dutch report on gvmnt ict projects: os and oss should actually be implemented

2014-10-15 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi all,

Here in The Netherlands years after writing down that open source and
open standards are important, now it's getting clear that actually using
that is important too :)

Today a special parliament commission reported after thoroughful
investigation of failures in government ICT projects - cost estimated
between 1 and 5 billion Euro.

http://www.houseofrepresentatives.nl/news/committee-presents-report-failures-government-ict-projects

http://www.houseofrepresentatives.nl/sites/www.houseofrepresentatives.nl/files/news_items/conclusions_and_recommendations.pdf

The government has already decided to choose open source and open
standards wherever possible. However, this policy is still not being
implemented sufficiently in practice. This needs to change: not only can
this approach bring about enormous cost savings, but also opens the
door to criticism and dissent.

Cheers

You must have noticed it in the announcement that LibreOffice turns four

Maybe a simple manner to pay some attention to this great moment, is

[libreoffice-marketing] FixMyDocuments

2014-09-22 Thread Cor Nouws
Hi all,

A great initiative here
  http://fixmydocuments.eu/

You can report sites of public admins that offer documents but not in ODF.
Would be nice if one could also report on administration that cannot
handle ODF files sent to them..

Hmm.

 Great idea!
I'll do some checks in my network.

The people from T-Dose use something that - at least from my perspective
- looks fine.
It is drupal with a lot additional modules, that allows us to make forms
and views. Thus most is automated. Before you are that far, it's quite a
job, but after that handy. People there are willing to help.

Also there is https://amsterdam2014.drupal.org/ a drupal based
conference site that is neat.
Have some more contacts around that too.

If some people can check both and see what fits most..

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Working with RedMine

Florian Effenberger wrote on 18-09-14 12:13:

So you suggest we do not experiment with anything?

it's just my personal opinion - if each project hosts their discussion
somewhere else, chaos will break free. Plus, the entry barrier for
Redmine is much higher than for a mailing list, which makes me fear we
would exclude people if we exclusively focus on that.

I've only read Charles initial mail (well and this short one)
What I thought of:

RedMine is great. Project focussed working. OK
Furthermore: I think additionally a mailing list is important. Just that
people can ask questions. Or to send some not one x/y/z..
Also, if just all great ideas are added (sometimes it may look like
dumping) at Redmine, wouldn't that incline the risk of causing a mess.
Could be coordinated via mail ;/

Charles: you think of doing all that via the discuss-list ??

Cheers,
Cor

Yes indeed. I think we'll have to order another batch unless someone
(Robinson? Cor?) already has a batch of them remaining.

There are still thousands available.
Roughly
 Large I Love LibreOffice : 2600
 Large LibreOffice + TDF : 2500
 Small I Love LibreOffice : 1200
 Small LibreOffice + TDF : 1000

So happy to ship some if desired.

Is it more efficient to ship stickers or to get some printed in the US
at the rate quoted by Robinson? He had quoted the following:

If you want say 400-800 of each, shipment will be much cheaper.
Maybe 25-35 Euro.
If you want huge amounts, order on your own :)
