The posting of the gutter press article is extremely misguided to say the
least
I am not particularly aware of Hills politics other than she is a Democrat
but given the tsunami of press interest in recent days it would be fairly
likely that if she had ever said anything  close to overt white supremacism
this would have been trumpeted about.

In the last week there has been a strong reaction in Australia to recently
surfaced tapes of a Trevor Noah performance which had vile  racist and
sexist slurs against Aboriginal women. While he now claims to know better
it is incomprehensible how  just a few years ago he was so ready to pander
to and propagate the most vile slurs.

Similarly the Irish Times review  below brought to my attention elements of
racist and even Confederate sympathies on the part of Oscar Wilde that are
disappointing considering his own suffering of  national and sexual
discrimination and persecution.

The reports of the horrendous slaughter of Palestinians as the US embassy
was established in Jerusalem is sickening but entirely predictable. The US
has never been a neutral in this fight but It appears as a particularly
bloodthirsty backer of Zionism under the Trump leadership.

Any remnant of the two state solution is now torn to shreds. I have
supported the Palestinian struggle for just on 50 years. These days my
physical capacities are lessened by age and illness but I am more convinced
than ever that this is a struggle that will win.

But now more than ever it needs the support of us who live outside the
immediate area of struggle. Participate and at the least financially
support Palestinian solidarity groups rally, demonstrate lobby on the issue
of Palestinian rights. Support particularly the BDS campaign.

What I am now going to say will probably strike US readers of this site as
a little strange but a major site of this campaign over the next year
should be around Eurovision. This was won last weekend by an Israeli
singer. As I understand it this will mean that next year's contest will be
held in Israel. This normalisation of the zionist occupation of Palestine
under the ever growing openly murderous actions of that regime is abhorrent.

I think that there great difficulties to say the least with the Palestinian
leadership but that is a matter for the Palestinian people we of the left
have a huge obligation to do everything we can to help protect them against
the Zionist settler regime and its supporters in our countries.

Next week on Monday I see my heart specialist on Tuesday I am having my
ulcered leg dressed, Thursday I see my  ophthalmologist

The real face of Zionism is bared at the prison fence that is used against
the Palestinians of the Gaza strip.

The latest report I have seen says that 17  have been killed and thousands
injured by tank, drone and gunfire from "democratic Zionists".

This is just the start of a 6 week campaign leading up to the re-siting of
the US embassy to Jerusalem in May under the orders of the monster Trump.
It is hard to know how much Palestinian blood will be spilt in the
celebration carried on by the "democratic Zionists."

I support the BDS campaign as a solidarity with the Palestinian people in
their inspirational struggle against Zionism and for a unified Palestinian
state from the river to the sea.

I have not previously heard the term zio but on its face I don't
particularly like it I prefer to call things what they are and the enemy is
Zionism and therefore Zionists particularly weasel "democratic" Zionists.

That struggle includes the rejection and repulsion of anti-Semitism as well
as the fraudulent attempt to equate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.

group.

consequences  in dealing with the treatment of women and LGBTQI in our

The continued drive to discredit Darwin and his central contribution to our
understanding of evolution and its driving forces strikes me as analogous
to the attacks of Steadman et al on Marx. These attempts to shade our
understanding in the interrelated fields of science and political economy
go along with the increasing dominance of the reactionary undergrowth in
what is taken to be normal politics. Although I am sure that Wilson
expresses himself much more eloquently than Trump.

I used to work as a lawyer for Legal Aid in Sydney  some years ago now. I
remember advising colleagues not to put anything in an email that they did
not want to put before them in court someday-this was pre-twitter,
That would have been silly from a legal point of view, Some of the twitter
rants that have caused people problems of late
strike me as extremely infantile leftism- a wordy version of black
bloc/antifa  physical infantile leftism.

This is a very short-sighted dismissal of the struggle against
anti-Semitism that is necessary wherever it raises its vile and reactionary
head. Bollyn doesn't talk about the easter bunny or the Illuminati it is
clear anti-Semitism with a sometime flimsy fig-leaf of anti-Zionism. The
organisations that have denounced the use of their space for the spouting

The death of Richard Neville at the age of 74 shows the slipping away of a

In the  Counterpunch article it is suggested that Trotsky would be a
Guardian reader. Now there are some interesting things to be found there. A
recent example is the excellent work down by its Australian offshoot in
bringing to light documenting the regime of terror maintained against
asylum seekers imprisoned by Australia on Nauru. But on the issue
raised-the ongoing fight by the right wing to retake the leadership of the
Labour Party in Britain the Guardian's coverage is abysmal and toadying to
the anti-Corbyn forces.
Trotsky, I would  think, would read this swill only to demolish it.

Yes I read the article and I thought it as likely that urban Venezuelan
workers were voluntarily keen to go till the soil
as it would be for you and the other leaders of SA in Australia to do so.
The serious point,  Stuart, is that there is a long history in the
socialist movement of we who live in comparative ease being all to ready to
accept that workers in "actually existing socialism" happily undergo all
sorts of crap that we never would and it always been poppycock and

I am imagining Stuart or any of the other heroes of socialist agrarian
labour in the leadership of the

At this stage the Green and Libertarian votes don't really change the
relationship between Trump and Clinton so far as the polls go. The Greens
in the US are not a socialist or vanguard party. Stein has many drawbacks
as a candidate  but she comes up pretty good against Clinton or Trump. But
that doesn't seem to me to be the point. In the US a move towards breaking
from the utterly poisonous lesser-evilism that shackles workers,
Africa-Americans Latinos etc to the fetid corpse of "progressive" Democrats
would be an actually progressive move.

Surely the point of Clay's story of his father's treacherous dirty tricks
campaign on behalf of Goldwater is that it was a miserable failure. But the
further miserable failure was that Democrats have spent the last 50 years
created a red-herring by trailing the increasingly tattered coat-tails of
the legislative victories for civil and voting rights from the mid sixties
and have consistently won support on the grounds of lesser evilism to carry
out their actual reactionary policies

I'll give Gary MacLennan  a little support in his herculean attempts to
interest the list in what's going on in  British politics -it would be a
fool's errand to attempt to interest the largely  UScentric  list
membership  in anything so weird as Australian political developments.

Anyway this latest setback to the attempts by the British Labour Party
bigwigs to rig the leadership against Corbyn is an important development as
it makes it more likely that he will be able to rely on support from the
LP's rank and file to win against the rightist putsch.

The LP has now become an actual mass party. From a Marxist viewpoint
neither Corbyn nor the party are avatars of perfection but possibilities
are strongly opened beyond what is offered by the Greens in the US or
Australia. Really I think that taking on board some of these
developments could  actually be of interest and benefit list members
understanding of world events which do actually go on outside the US.

The problem with this call is that it is based on an independent Sanders
campaign or Sanders/Green campaign actually becoming the dominant
anti-Trump force. That seems to me to be highly unlikely to say the least
and the idea that Clinton and the Democrats would abandon the field  is
surely put forward as a merely fanciful rhetorical device.

No the reality must be faced that a supercharged third party Sanders/Green
campaign might well secure a healthy percentage of votes but nowhere near
enough to displace Clinton as the major challenger to Trump. The further
reality is that the more successful such a campaign was the more likely
that it would take enough votes from the Clinton Democrats to leave Trump
the final winner.

This is not-as far as I am concerned- an argument against such a campaign.
But it should be built on an honest  understanding of what it involves.

The possibility of a Trump victory  is being used as a bogey-man argument
to force support to the very-right wing candidacy of Hillary Clinton. But
this is not the 1930's , Trump does not equal fascism, the Democrats are
not Social Democrats and a call for an independent left campaign is not a
breach of a non-existent united front against a non-existent threat of
fascism.

However it would be counter-productive in the short and long run to build a
left third party on a false basis of becoming in this election cycle the
dominant force against Trump. Rather it should be done on the basis of a
decisive break form the falsity of lesser-evilism  and the beginning of a
fight to build an independent political leadership.

While I look at these issues from afar in Australia I would think that a
first step would be advocating a vote for the Greens and to build that as
strongly as possible. Unfortunately Sanders is now out of the picture for
such a project as he has become a shill for Wall St Hillary.

Tariq Ali is over enthusiastic as to the result of a victory for Corbyn in
the leadership election for British Labour but he is
totally right that there is no equivalent within the Australian Labor
Party. But there is room here for fighting back on austerity for fighting
against the barbaric treatment of asylum seekers and many other issues. The
Canberra Coup was directed at disciplining of the ALP and the leadership of
the trade unions to pursue "reasonable" -ie pro-capitalist policies-as was
already their natural default positions.

So various Labor governments have presided over the weakening of the unions
the reduction of real wages ,the transfer of wealth to obscenely bloated
capitalists and CEOs and ever deeper involvement in imperialist adventurism
including most criminally support  of and participation in the invasion and
destruction of Iraq.

The left Laborites have raised little or no opposition to this over a
lengthy period. Certainly what I have seen of Corbyn places him well to the
left of anyone in the ALP. While polls show  the ALP has a commanding lead
over the conservatives of the Abbott government this seems to me to be
based on an aversion to the stinking politics of the government rather than
enthusiasm for the Labor Party.

The Greens who register up to 15% of the vote in polls are seen as more of
a source of fightback than Labor here.

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's pre-eminent horse race (equivalent to
Kentucky Derby in the US) -it's billed as the race that stops a nation and
in Melbourne the day it is held (the 1st Tuesday in November so coinciding
with the US presidential election every 4yrs). But for all the populism
beat up around it  is dispiritingly like any other race-only more so.
The day at Melbourne's Flemington racecourse is dominated by corporate
marquees where celebrities parade for big dollars.
The term well known racing identity is a euphemism for criminal in
Australia
But the so-called legitimate side of racing is fuelled by cruelty, vast
profits and rip-offs through betting lightening the pockets of mug punters
by hundreds of millions of dollars.

This is disappointing as I rate Gaga as a performer . It was interesting to
see the list of musicians who have decided not to play in Israel include
America. If my memory is correct they breached the boycott against South
Africa (possibly by playing Sun City) . On the figures mentioned in the
article Gaga will do well financially in the short term but hopefully there
will be a price to be paid for playing in the state that massacres
Palestinians-an actual big monster in the world.
