[MCN-L] RFP: Museum Collection Database Public Portal User Study

2020-08-12 Thread Erin Richardson
study component of the overall project is intended to provide
demographic information about web portal users, information about their
expectations and perceptions of the current portal in order to plan for
future improvements to the collection management system, metadata, metadata
transparency, linked data, and the public discovery platform. The study
should provide baseline information against which future interim and
summative studies can be compared. It is also anticipated that the study
results will be published in one or more scholarly journals and/or released
independently in support of field-wide learning.

In addition to learning about the current user population, the study should
explore the population of non-users to understand their demographics and
perceptions regarding use of art and humanities collections to support
teaching and learning in a wide variety of academic disciplines.

About Five Colleges, Inc.

Made up of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the
University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Five College Consortium in the
Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts is one of the oldest and
most extensive higher education consortia in the United States. Its four
original campuses began collaborating in the early 20th century, decades
before incorporating as a formal consortium and midwifing the creation of
Hampshire College in the late 1960s.

Over their 100-plus years of collaboration and 50-plus years as a
consortium, the shared spirit of collaboration, community service, and
intellectual excellence of the Five College campuses has engendered an
organization serving five campuses with 30,000 students, 2,200 faculty
members, 7,000 courses, and a combined library collection of some 10
million volumes. In addition to administering a wide array of academic and
administrative programs that benefit faculty, students, and staff at member
institutions, Five Colleges creates a dynamic intellectual and cultural
environment for local communities.
Research questions

The general research questions for this study include, but are not limited
to, the following items. It is expected that these will be discussed and
refined in concert with the selected firm.

   1.

What are the demographic characteristics of a) the current collections
   discovery portal’s users? b) non-users?
   2.

What are participants’ perceptions of the portal experience in terms of:
   1.

  User interface design?
  2.

  Ease of use?
  3.

Accuracy and trustworthiness of returned items?
  4.

  Metadata transparency?
  3.

What are participants’ motivations for seeking three-dimensional
   resources?
   4.

How did participants find the portal? (referral sources)
   5.

What are participants' expectations regarding discovery of
three-dimensional objects housed on campuses or in individual museums?
   6.

   For non-users:
   1.

Are participants aware of the existence of campus museums? The
  collection portal?
  2.

What are participants’ perceptions about who the collections are for?
  3.

What are participants’ perceptions about how collections can be used
in teaching and learning across a variety of disciplines?
  7.

In what ways are the results of this study generalizable to casual
   public users?

Study population

The study population for this research includes the following groups:

   1.

Current students at UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Hampshire College,
Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College
   2.

Recent alumni of the above campuses
   3.

Historic Deerfield stakeholders including membership, visitors, and
   alumni of its fellowship program
   4.

Faculty at all five campuses and Historic Deerfield
   5.

Outside researchers who make use of any of the collections, or the
public portal to discover the museums’ holdings
   6.

Users of other managed collections on the campuses and within Museums10
   including library and archive collections
   7.

Optional groups, groups of potential new users:
   1.

  Public school systems
  2.

Other regional campuses, outside of the FCI network
  3.

General public users otherwise unaffiliated with FCI or Museums10.

As the study population are college and university students, among others,
it is necessary that Institutional Review Board requirements be met for
each campus. See the Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements
section.
Institutional Review Board (IRB) requirements

In order to ensure ethical research, allow access to the student population
at all five campuses, and permit eventual publication of the research
findings in support of our responsibility to the museum field at large,
this research project will engage in the full IRB procedure for all five
campuses. Erin Richardson, PhD, Project Manager for the Mellon Collections

[MCN-L] Covid-19 Museum digital resource analytics?

2020-04-29 Thread Erin Richardson
Hi everyone!

I'm looking to see if anyone has run across aggregated data about museum
digital resource use? Here are two thoughts which may or may not be
related:

1) we're doing lots of digital content because it is the only choice

2) users are looking for digital content from us

Do these intersect? Are we providing the right stuff? Are there
statistically significant increases in use of resources by students,
teachers, or by the general public?

Sure, we can have a speculative, anecdotal, conversation here, but I'm
really looking for data that maybe someone has already put together but
that I haven't seen.

Thanks, hive-mind!

Erin.

[MCN-L] Seeking person at intersection of statistics and museum collections

2020-02-03 Thread Erin Richardson
Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for a person who understands museum collections management AND
who is great at stats to occasionally partner with me on client projects
and research/publication. I CAN do basic stats, but I don't have a lot of
confidence in the appropriateness of my methodology choices or explanatory
abilities. Also, it is an entirely other brain space for me and while I
find it interesting, my lack of expertise ends up costing me a lot of
time/money.

I am doing some research and modelling which is fairly groundbreaking and
definitely publish-able, so ideally this person would be interested in
pursuing some interesting lines of research in applied stats. When this
work is for a client, there is compensation involved. When it is just
experimental, we'd both have to be motivated enough where publication would
be the reward.

If this sounds interesting to you and you have at least some post-graduate
statistics qualifications, I'd love to know what you're about!

Erin.

[MCN-L] Looking for Museum professionals versed in BlockChain for AAM session proposal

2019-09-20 Thread Erin Richardson
Hi all:

I am posting this on behalf of the requestor below. Please don't reply to
me, but to Mariano Desmaras directly.

Looking for Museum Professional versed in BlockChain for an AAM session
proposal
I'm putting together a session for the Time Portals sessions, organized by
the Elizabeth Merritt from Center for the Future of Museums. I wish to
present the future of museums through the concept of the BlockChain Museum.
I believe BlockChain or similar technologies will change the nature of
institutions. In the near future, interest groups will organize via
BlockChain contracts and produce exhibits and programs in the manner of
museums minus the institution, because it will be radically re-organized in
the BlockChain. This will allow for under-represented communities to
network and de-colonize wealth in favor of their communities. I could
imagine a scene in 2040 where a network of Latinx cultural stakeholders (or
other minority groups) have learned to channel resources to empower
themselves without the need of institutional brand because the BlockChain's
smart contracts secure trust through the transparency guaranteed by
smart-contracts that specify transactional requirements, benchmarks and
goals. I’m looking for additional partners, please email to
mari...@museumenvironments.com. Naturally, If you have any experience with
BlockChain it would be especially useful. Regards Mariano Desmaras

[MCN-L] Big news from Erin Richardson Consulting

2019-08-27 Thread Erin Richardson

** Erin Richardson Consulting

is now
Frank & Glory
We are a museum services firm that supports diversity and sustainability in
museum collections. With current and future audiences in mind, we help museums
transform their collections into accessible, relevant, inclusive, and
sustainable tools for mission delivery.

After 18 months of working on my own as Erin Richardson Consulting, I wanted to
refine and define how I'll be working with museums, communities, and
collections in the future. As I thought about growing a team (in the works!)
and establishing my firm nationally and internationally (also already
happening!), it became important to me to create an identity that does not rely
on my name alone.

We'll continue to work with museums to create sustainable collection holdings
for current and future audiences in these practice areas:
* Collection Management Policies
* Collecting Plans
* Collection assessment
* Deaccession and disposal
* Abandoned and undocumented property resolution
* Collection data cleaning
* Cataloging projects that promote accessibility

Re: [MCN-L] Assistance needed with ULAN data

2019-08-16 Thread Erin Richardson
Thank you so much, everyone! I discovered a love of data during the PhD
program I completed last year - I feel like it's late to discover the
analytical side of my brain mid-career. As such, I'm definitely a novice,
but recognized immediately that many museums are just terrible about data
as a general concept so I try to put on the data hat every time I sign on
with a new project to understand how we can work toward letting data help
us be more efficient in cataloging. Thank you, Getty (and David, in
particular) for creating this tool. I'll let you know how it goes with this
project! I think i might be a representative of the target market for
OpenRefine (someone who kind of knows what they're doing - or at least
knows what should be possible, but nothing about the architecture required
to make it work), so I'll make careful notes about my experience with the
tutorial.

Again, Thank you!

[MCN-L] Assistance needed with ULAN data

2019-08-16 Thread Erin Richardson
Hi wise MCN-L members!

I am working with a museum to clean up their data. I don't have a lot of
backend data experience. My task is to populate artist records with ULAN
data. They're using EmbARK. I'd like to upload the relevant metadata using
the ULAN ID as a link. I'm having difficulty accessing the ULAN data from
getty's download center.
https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/obtain/download.html

Note: I know next to nothing about data that is not in CSV format. I've
tried to convert the sample ULAN XML data to CSV but am getting lots of
errors.

I don't even really understand the reasonable-ness of this question, so
please bear with me!

Thanks for any help you're able to offer!
