To clarify: by disc I mean the washer that rides between the bearing and the
clamping nut. The brake disc obviously needs to turn freely (once the clamping
nut is set to the proper tension).

to come on randomly. It'll stay on until I turn the stalk to intermittent and
back to off.
Today it was particularly aggravating as it kept coming on every 5-10 minutes.
If I don't cycle the stalk it'll stay on...

I don't know any rule of thumb. I do know that on my W123, the
difference between too tight and too loose on the gauge was not more
than 1/8 of a turn on the nut. The difference was imperceptible by
feel. So I'd suggest getting a gauge.

The generator head would be the critical element - I can replace the engine
with others to make it turn. How much would operating at maximum capacity
