On a Windoze XP machine, you should be running a fixed page (swap) file of 2.5x
your RAM size. By setting it to a fixed size you will cut down significantly on
page swaps.
Otherwise, everything else sounds OK.

If the onboard video uses system ram, you can get funky available memory
numbers like that.
You need multiple cores and/or multiple processors for speech recognition to
work smoothly. Windows is a resource hog, but pales in comparison to Dragon.

Set the PC to no swap file, defrag, then create a fixed size swap file, 2.5X
the memory (as stated earlier). This results in a clean, not fragmented swap
file, that will stay that way.

It would if XP defrag condensed the files instead of leaving spaces between
them.
It's still much better than not having defragged before setting the swap
file. Yes - a clean partition is best, if you have room for one.

So, it sounds like Dragon is trying to listen while you are away? It
sounds like performance isn't a bottleneck until Dragon eats all your RAM,
so maybe it's just recording dead air. If that's so, you will never be able
to beat it.
I've not used Dragon, is there a way to pass it commands like

I am becoming a raving fan of audacity. Here is the question. Is it
possible to import the narrated sound from a ppt slideshow into
Audacity to edit it? If so, how do you do that? I have tried to
drag the speaker symbol in the ppt slide to the Audacity window with
no result.
There does

Thanks Don, it was accidental, but that is almost how I did it ... well, one
day later but using the 'mydefrag' program. Should I do it again with the
no page file, another defrag and then set it back to 6500?

As someone pointed out, a huge Word document will slow the system down as
well. If that's a possible issue, dictate to new, small docs, then merge or
copy the text to the master document after the dictation session. Dragon
will read a document, looking for word patterns to understand your speach
