I looked at the 05 section (timing chain) at DaveM's site. it sounds
like the lower pin is fixed and you pull the banana rail off the pin
after you take off the chain case. (01-210) Funny thing, under the
124/OM603, there is no 01-210. I found it under the 126 section.

My paper copy of the parts manual shows the pin as a separate part, but in the
picture it's different from the pins for the upper rail which have the threaded
hole for the extractor.

You do not need a new transmission, the local transmission shop does not
know what they are doing. Those 722.6 trannys are pretty bullet proof
mechanically. There are 2 common problems that cause them to go in limp
mode. First there is this little spring that breaks in the valve body.

Drill and use an extractor, the broken ones on our two 603's have
come out easily once the head is off.
Quite an exercise to attempt with the head on the engine with the
engine in the car -- didn't work!

Before you give up on the "old" trans., call Sun Valley Mercedes
Dismantlers, Sun Valley, CA and describe the symptoms and attempted
cures. They are the best trans diagnosticians in this hemisphere.

Rectangularishinstein one.

If memory reseat doesnt work. try using one stick at a time. If that
doesnt solve the problem its probably your power supply. Safe mode
requires the least amount of power. PS checkers are pretty cheap...

Since it runs OK in safe mode it sounds like it might be hardware that's
getting flakey, but not activating in safe mode. If in safe mode
without networking it's OK, it might be the network card. If it is OK
in safe mode with networking but not in normal boot then I'd look more
at the video card.
Hardware problem.
Start with memory-that is the most likely culprit. Even removing and reseating
it can do the trick.
When I started doing more workstation stuff I was amazed at how many issued are
caused by memory...
