No Preglow light. Tested the plugs and found #1 dead.
I attempted to change all the plugs but gave up after #1 (Light comes on

What year? 617 engine? I did glows on my '81 300TD without removing anything.
Its dammed fiddly but can be done.
AFAIK no light = no glow at least at first, at some point the light goes out
even though glowing may continue.

My 240D rolling average is 28mpg over 120,000 miles in 2 cars.

Fluid and filters need to be changed. No use running fresh fluid through a
nasty filter Fresh standard ATF will help flush gunk out. Not as good as
synth, but a short shot of synth will allow you to change to longer periods.
