that covers the strut shaft - bought them a while back but I knew the
difficulty I'd have compressing a strut in good condition and decided to
wait. Plus I need to get the clamps to hold them n place. Are the

Buy the clamps from MB. They're cheap. And you'll probably find that they're
not clamps - they're really for keeping the bottom portion of the boot open and
in place over the strut, if they're like the ones for the later model cars.
I just put new boots, buffers and clamps on my 97 SL500.
I am a little late to the party here but I do believe that I have a set of Euro
headlights from my 1976 W115 300D that I scrapped long ago. The lights were
functioning when I stripped them off the carcass about 10 years ago. Peter
Frederick has dibs, since he expressed an interest back
Believe it or not my brother still drives his 75 300D and we are
considering replacing the floor pans, so I may have a use for those
headlights. I'll let you know soon.

The gas pressure in a good strut requires some effort to collapse the
rod back into the bottom of the strut far enough to get the upper
bearing out. It extends immediately when released, too.
Much easier to swap the bearing while the strut is out.

just a follow up. A rebuilt transmission shifts way better than one with
182000 mostly city miles on it. no more 1-2 thud and the 3-2 downshift
ka-chung is gone also. Basically it behaves like a normal modern auto
Transmission car now. No more driving around town in S to avoid the nasty

Did you check the center joint in the driveshaft? Tends to sound like
a bad muffler with extra vibration, most obvious at the console where
the carrier bearing is. Very obnoxious, but usually shakes all the
time, not just at 75 mph.
