IIRC my (Dwights, Dimitri's) '78 240D had the same issue. I used a bar to tension it a couple times. I *think* when we did the head gasket I took the conflagration off, welded the teeth and cut them back to shape with a grinder. I do remember I had to adjust that belt a lot... -Curt On
