Yesterday I drove Barney (2001 W210 E320 4matic) down to the closest shop, in 2nd gear, to get its transmission fault codes cleared. The bad news is that the tranny computer never would hook up, so probably is not working at all, which explains 2nd gear only. (There was no charge for no fix.)

Broken crankshaft? Not usual with an OM617, but possible. especially if someone changed the flywheel, etc. Broken chain/camshaft/cam towers is possible. with that, you can generally hear the chain hit the case, then the cam and bearings crunch, then silence, as you coast to a stop. Rod
