I'm not really fond of Dell computers for a number of reasons, but
reliability isn't one of them -- we have them at work, and the only
problem we've had is when someone used methylene chloride base
degreaser on a keyboard -- hence I have a slightly melted, although
fully functional, keyboard.
I have an Inspiron 4000 that I bought from an acquaintance after the
screen/top hinge broke on one side. Bought new hinges off of eBay, and
replaced them. We used to buy Compaq laptops at work, and I've taken a
few apart for various reasons over the years. I couldn't believe the
difference in

I've worked on Macs for years, and the only model I can think of that
is failure-prone is the original, Bondi Blue iMac. My brother in

My daughter has an ibook G3 700 that died. The blasted thing was never
right. The usual logic board problems. Between the university and Apple,
they never would repair the thing under the warranty or the extended logic
board repair program.
Does anyone have any chains to yank at Apple?
Loren:
The best place to look is eBay -- I see logic boards there all the time.
I've always avoided new Apple products, buy them used (currently using
a rather tired G3 beige and a Wallstreet Powerbook).
Have you done any research on the G3 700? Apple products can be
somewhat tempermental,
The audio died almost right away. The university shop diagnosed that as a
logic board failure, but said Apple wouldn't cover it under warranty. Now
the thing won't boot. University shop diagnosed that as a dead logic
board, again not covered under the Apple extended logic board replacement
Loren:
I did some reading, seems that model is, well, problematic.
The rush to meet the need for very light, very fast, large screen
laptops is probably most of the problem -- all the models that run
forever are pretty solid.
The battery problem could be the charge card, or a bad battery

Are you thinking that the sound and no start could all be caused by dead
batteries? This implies the techs at the university (an approved Apple
repair center) are wrong. I'd guess on a laptop that the pram battery is
soldered in: ie: replace the board.

My friend had an old G3 laptop with the same logic board issue, but because

The Latitude C640 I'm using right now is on its 3rd keyboard/trackpad. If I
