My 5.0 SLC had pretty good louvers:

But you can see them starting to peel at the bottom. And this was a car
that was garaged for probably 75% of its life and had 27k miles.
The guy who owns the car now had it completely stripped and repainted. I
REALLY!?! I should hit the yard again and assist the louvers to find a new
home from Fleabay. Bound to get bid up to stupid level if they are unobtanium.
That should pay out enough that I can rebuild the Djet m117 from the PnP SLC
if I can get it past SWMBA

Seems to be SOP to break what you can not figure out how to remove or access.
Tire wrench is a common key to get in the car. I am peeved at this, but yards
seem to think pulling parts is a profit center for the main task of crushing
cars. Bigger scare for them is ecology folks making nasty
I always thought that the SLC louvers were ultra cool. I'd like to have me a
450 SLC 5.0. Now that's a car. Pop in a 5 speed manual and it'll be all set to
go.

For sure. I can't imagine what they are like on Mitch's car. The 140 is a
frightening collection of black boxes that appear to be pretty robust, but
allow for little to no interaction for the average DIY'er when something goes
south.

I have always heard horror stories about the louvers. Things about them being
unobtanium and difficult to remove, clean/paint around, etc.

You should grab all the crank window parts, in the future you could convert
your car, or sell them to someone else.

I am so pleased. The SLC has a bunch of corrosion, but I did not touch the
fuel injectors. I am sorry I left them, Be looking at going back in a week to
grab them.

A valid idea. It would solve the issue with the power windows.

I had much more trouble (broken parts) with the manual windows in the W115
chassis cars than the electric windows. It's much easier to replace or
clean a switch than to fix or replace the mechanism. There are a lot of
parts in common between the W115 and the R107 ---
On Thu, Mar 21, 2013 at 2:48
Another valid point.
I was able to fix the issue in Gump, which was manual. I had electric things,
since there is magic involved and not pure mechanical physics

IIRC, the center pivot for the big spring was pot metal, and broke in both
of the manual window cars I had. I fabricated new ones from a large bolt
with a grinding wheel and hack saw, over the better part of a day each
time. I worried that the electric windows in the '76 300D would be even
more
The only problems with the SLC windows
were the flaking louvers in the back windows and one switch that needed
cleaning over the 100,000 that I had the car.
The electric window mechanisms (and the door check stops) in the
107 are magnificent pieces of engineering, unlike the wretched
pot-metal

mechanical physics
The pre-1990 MB electronics are, mostly, nearly that simple.
Especially pre-1980.
