Use Hylomar on the replacement head gasket. Be careful when you turn the engine by hand, the spring on the vacuum pump causes it to lurch forward. Remove the pump if it's a problem. You can do the head/head-gasket with the car in the engine. You'd have to pull it to replace the connecting rods. It

My Dad's '85 300D is doing the same sort of things. The charging light would faintly glow at an idle. Changed out the brushes (they are 2-3 years old) with another set. That didn't change anything. *** Swapped in a different alt, and the charge light didn't glow but voltages at the battery

Kaleb - What pressures are you measuring? If it just modulator pressure or are you measuring working pressure as well? Looking at my '83 TDM for 722.X trannys I see max modulator pressure of 4 bar (58 PSI) and max working pressures of 13.7 bar (200 PSI). Barry looking around for a guage to use
