I have never owned a 108 with a V-8, but the ones I had with the inline six were good cars and did well in the road. I like the simplicity of the sizes and the amount of space in the engine compartment they give you. The V-8s always sort of scared me with their fuel systems and the appearance of being shoehorned into the car. My Porsche 968 had gradually lost R-12 over a 20 year period - the sight glass was showing just occasional foam and the cooling barely perceptible. I added a can of stopleak and one can of their ES-12. Bubbles in the sight glass ceased and the cooling came back. Still working well. I had read good things about ES products at www.968forums.com . As I recall there were some oddities about the ES refrigerant. At least at one time they were not recommending it for a complete refill nor did they recommend pulling a vacuum on the system. Re: [MBZ] 108
My pick of the 108 litter would be a 280SEL. If the FI got too costly, I am sure I could snag a FI system off a 3.3 dogde or similar and adapticate it. However if the pump is cared for, they will last a lifetime or more. The M130/M180 is so smooth and quiet. They are nice engines, especially euro/pre-smog 250SE is not bad 250S with webers would be nice Dan can have all the warped nasty zenights he wants. Another possibility is to snag the dual 2 barrel solexes off an early 220S M180. those just run. 111/112 is nice too. This grille is not as big though. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Brake fiasco
I finally finished the complete front brake job on the 240D today, but...it's still not braking quite right. On the highway, with hard braking, I get a pulsation. There is also quite a bit of squealing. Here's what I did good and bad: Good: I used genuine MB flexible hoses, grease seals, bearing grease, left front bearing set, left front steel brake line. I used scale to measure grease and dial indicator to set bearings. Bad: I used remanufactured calipers, duralast pads and duralast rotors. I did this in the interest of time. I should have been more patient and ordered the good stuff from Gary! I also did not torque the lug nuts but I did use the wimpy factory lug wrench which can't realistically apply too much torque. I also didn't step on it to tighten! I've never had an issue with this approach so I doubt that I warped the rotors but you never know. What could be going on? Literally everything was replaced! Re: [MBZ] OT power line ethernet
You're better off trying an antenna than using a repeater or range extender, both of which will cause you to lose some bandwidth in the process. Your access point will have some antennas attached to it that can be removed and a larger antenna or more directional antenna can be attached. It was at these that I got to hobnob with the likes of people such as Sherril Milnes. It was pretty cool to talk to well known operatic performers like him on such a personal level. One of the things I liked best were the backstage talks they would do after a performance. They went a long way in helping to better understand the characters and plot of the opera, especially if it was one you were unfamiliar with. I think too many people both present and perceive opera as a snooty upper crust sort of entertainment, something that you have to be intelligent and well bred to enjoy. It's too bad, as we would on occasion take friends with us, especially ones who had never been, and they always came away amazed at how much they enjoyed it. It's almost twice as big and gets about the same milage -- 3.23 gears instead of 3.88, uses less fuel. I suspect at 4.5 can be safely tuned to get around 18 on the highway if you use only premium. No comparison in terms of power, the 4.5 is a real beast. Factory specs are 9.5 sec 0-60, and most of that is on the fast end. It's actually a pain to drive on the open road, it keeps wanting to go faster and it's necessary to keep lifting your foot to stay near the speed limit. The article goes into great detail about the transference of material from the pads to the rotors, after installing them as new. What most people erroneously believe is a warped rotor is actually a build up of pad material to the rotor, causing the pedal to pulse when braking. Coming to a full stop whilst the brakes are new and hot can cause this. The article also talks about how the composition of the iron changes as it goes through heating and cooling cycles. Re: [MBZ] Bed and Brake fiasco
Bedding in brakes is a process of getting the rotors hot and (for want of a better term) tempering them. Also some of the material from the pads is infused into the rotors, basically this can't be done at the factory (well it could but would add cost). The problem is if you don't bed in your brakes, you may end up with a hard spot on your rotors, this happens because the rotors where not tempered and then when you do have a hard brake situation and stop, the spot where the pads are will be hotter than the rest of the rotor. Basically what you are trying to achieve with the bedding in, is to get the rotors uniformly as hot as they will be likely to get in 99% of driving situations and then let them cool down. Quality rotors will come with instructions on how to bed them in but basically you need to drive as fast as the law will allow and then brake hard without stopping the wheels from turning, this has to be repeated a couple of times to ensure that the rotors get up to maximum operating temperature. One of the things I have read on the net is people saying I never bed my brakes in and I have had no issues well that is lucky and may be that after they fitted their pads and rotors they drove the car in a similar fashion to a proper bedding in procedure, however may well only have got their rotors up to 60% of max temp and due to their driving style, have got away with it. The problem is that if you tempered your rotors to 60% and then get into a situation where the temp of the rotors go up to 100%, you are in effect re-tempering the rotors, which can cause problems. So to sum up, bedding in brakes is the process of getting your rotors up to 100% operating temp and transferring some pad material into the rotors. If you have done it properly you should be able to smell your brakes but make sure not to fully stop the car until the rotors have cooled down, otherwise you could have a hot/hard spot. You need to find a good location to do this, preferably a rural or industrial area with little traffic, obviously going a bit faster will be better than going slower. From memory the recommendation is 80kmh down to 5kmh and then up to 80 and down to 5 again and once more, drive until the rotors have cooled and then repeat (especially if you are bedding in rears) Hendrik who has done a bit of brake bedding On 30/08/13 09:54, dsereta...@yahoo.com wrote: Not sure if I know anymore what bedding pads means. Re: [MBZ] Bed and Brake fiasco
The real problem is coming to a very hard stop and then holding the brakes on without moving. This permits the carbon in the pad to become incorperated into the iron of the disk, making a hard spot. There is a huge difference between bedding in racing brakes and normal ones. All you need to do with normal brakes is go lightly until the fur on the surface has worn off and the pads conform to the rotor. If you do make a panic stop, DON'T just sit there with the brakes locked up after you stop, ease off and allow the wheels to rotate a bit. Best if you can roll slowly, but it's not always possible. If you can, ease off the pedal and allow the car to roll slowly when coming to a stop, it doesn't take much to get the heat below the critical temperature. Even a panic stop will not heat the whole rotor enough to carburize it, you have to drag the brakes hard at full throttle for a while, even Nascar cars rarely have glowing rotors, if they do they aren't ventilated well enough. If you have to warm up the brakes to get them to work, toss the pads and buy ones that work cold, or expect to rear end people all the time while you wait for your brakes to warm up and work -- they are ALWAYS cold in terms of brakes unless the calipers stick. One way to eliminate the squeak is to stick with OEM pads, as they have the anti-squeal material bonded to the back of the pad. Cheap aftermarkets with plain metal backing plates (no layer of hard plastic on the piston side) will probably squeal no matter what you do, and glueing them to the rotors with Permatex is only going to make them very hard to remove. What most people erroneously believe is a warped rotor is actually a build up of pad material to the rotor, causing the pedal to pulse when braking. Coming to a full stop whilst the brakes are new and hot can cause this. The article also talks about how the composition of the iron changes as it goes through heating and cooling cycles. two things in life often don't work out well: 1. rushing 2. cheaping out when you do either it generally ends up taking longer and costing more money, but we have moved to a society that values fast and cheap above all. in this case, we learn about rushing. you can't rush anymore as there is a lot of outright crap being sold as people enjoy making 500% margins while offering the lowest price at the same time. (in fact,THIS is the only road to success today, but that is a topic for another time). one simply cannot rush today and expect it to work out with any consistency. and there often isn't even that much of a delay as parts are often delivered in one or two business days. cheaping out is similarly problematic. penoff sent me a customer recently who wanted a deal on a water pump on a W115 300D. i told him that rather than search for a low price on the standard geba pump all the front end sites push, he ought to buy a hepu as those are MUCH better in this application than the mediocre geba and that i'd sell him one for like 10 bucks more than a geba. a few days later he emails to solicit advise as he is having fitment problems with the geba he bought from the low bidder. what did he save by cheaping out? the bottom line is that going and buying a pile of garbage at autohausAZ is not really the best value, sort of like buying shoes at walmart. sometimes it works out but often it does not someone was shocked today to learn that the bucket hat i wear all the time (yeah, i'm a fashion icon) cost over 60 bucks in a world where walmart and the flea market sell bucket hats for under 10 dollars all day long. i didn't care to explain it and just said man, did i get taken! but the reality is that it is hemp watership that has been worn pretty much daily by me for 4 years. it has been washed hundreds of times. it will probably last several years more and odds are the i will lose it before i wear it out. OEM parts are available from autohaus az if you ask for them. NO problems so far. Since Q is no more, we are on our own, and I use several sources like I used to. [MBZ] OT Bringing back the View Master
Hey all, just wanted to share a little diddy we just launched. No doubt you're familiar with View Masters, the old school slide reel viewers--you probably had some Disney ones years ago... maybe still do. I've partnered up with a guy that used to shoot in stereovision, did all that fancy stuff for Spielberg back in the day... and well in the spirit of adorning the analog, I'm trying to get the new kids hooked back on these things. If you're familiar with Instagram, you know it's the largest photo sharing community on the planet. We simply married the two. Re: [MBZ] Brake fiasco
usually i ship the best parts i can without regard to location. so, for example, i really like those previously mentioned dallas made R4 AC compressors, so i sent mike esh one of those even though i had access to really good air products compressors 200 miles from his home. i did this because he was ok with getting it next week. if he said he needed it today and didn't want to pay some freight, i'd have offered him the air products one out of chicago instead. if, however, all i had available in chicago were the ubiquitous chinese behrs i'd have warned them that those were not the best but would have shipped if he wanted them. i guess there is a lot of communication with the buyer so where it is shipped from is flexible, but generally i recommend quality over speed (but speed is possible for nearly all orders without additional charge with minor sacrifices in quality. i generally will not allow major sacrifices in quality though) i've always done free shipping over $99 but there is flexibility there. sometimes i'll give you partial discounts on shipping or even free shipping under 99. bill wachsmuth spent like 70 bucks on parts yesterday and the actual shipping was 10, but i charged him only 5. but as a general rule expect to pay some freight below 99 dollars and expect to pay none above that figure yes, i email tracking numbers when i know them i email invoices for those who want them. most of my business is conducted in email, so there is a record there and a formal invoice would be redundant. web orders automatically generate invoices. phone orders will nearly always have an invoice emailed so there is a clear record of the transaction. i mean, say you buy an air filter and then your car blows up 3 weeks later without it having been installed. how do i know how much to refund you on a return unless that clear record is created?
