Re: [MBZ] Bluetooth OBD-II scanners
On Feb 9, 2014 8:07 PM, Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com wrote: In my search for OBDII dongles, I found that the WiFi ones were less troublesome as far as connectivity. At least that seemed to be a common issue for the BT ones I looked at. I bought am ELM 327 model and it has worked flawlessly in my R129 with my iPad. ELM327 is just the cheap chipset that is used for all of these. There are some Bluetooth quirks with specific chips, and of course Bluetooth stacks on Windows are all over the map as far as compatibility. Higher end Android devices will be more compatible (and I seem to recall the stack unified in 4.1), but I've used several different brands/devices and not had any issues. I know nothing about Bluetooth on the Apple platforms. I bought my adapter because it had a specific brand (not one I'd heard, but so the labeling would be consistent) and that had good reviews. The biggest single problem in reviews, when I was shopping, wasn't compatibility but rather DOA or malfunctioning devices. The Wi-Fi ones won't have the compatibility issues, but you might want to use your Wi-Fi for something else. Bluetooth just connects and you're using it, then disconnects when you walk away. There are devices that turn off with the vehicle, but I've never had any drain problems - Bluetooth is relatively low power, and chatter is very low when the computer is disconnected from the application. Not sure I'd pay extra even now. Gerry, I don't think this is Alzheimers disease. It's just how our brain filters in and filters out information for us. For example, take one of the tests where they show you a bunch of words with letters missing. You can still read the sentences/words because your mind adds them in. I think that's why most people don't see the of words as they aren't necessary to our brains in order to complete the sentences (regardless of what our English teachers told us in high school). That includes every MB I ever worked on the brakes, other than 110. I just never tried it on a 110, not that it would not work. I first tried it on my first SDL, maybe 10 years ago. I'd never heard of it. I just observed that the fluid ran out, so I surmised that the new fluid might run in. It did, so it saved some effort on bleeding and SWMBO was no longer a good brake bleeding partner. Depends on what it is, socks for instance I've found I'm quality sensitive on. I've been buying Darn Tough socks at $20 a pair which seems absurd until you wear them. They're about 100x better than a pair of socks that costs 1/10 the price. I also realized the other day that the thicker pairs don't pick up any smell or ick (you know the feeling of pre-worn socks) after one day so I can wear them 2 days in a row (or better let 'em air out one day in between) which saves me washing and I don't need as many pairs. I scored 4 pairs for Christmas and had already bought one pair, I figure if I double the number I'll be set for a few years anyway... Oh and work boots, my made in America Redwings were worth all of the $200 I paid for them. From the initial inspection, I would have to detail it fully, filters and fluids, charge up the battery, trailer it home for my work, then drag it back to install a fresh fuel pump. I also found the 116 grille I'd bought for cutting off some repair plastic. That turns out to bridge nicely across the radiator, pinned in place by the grille surround mounting ears. I might go that way for now, it looks somewhat better than a gaping dark hole. I did not find any spare headlights, and I was reluctant to steal one off of the 250C. I dug some more, and found the spare glass lenses I'd bought for these headlights. They were flat-front, not the curved-fronts that were on the car, but they were Hella. I tried one, and it fits! I used a hammer to try to remove the bend from the trim ring, and I think it worked. There's a crack, as this is pot metal, but it doesn't look too bad. It looks a little funny compared to the other one, I may end up putting on both flat lenses and retiring the (broken, and glued-together) curved lens. I had to replace the 4W city (parking) light bulb, but the others were all still intact. I put the headlight back on the car, that helps the looks a lot. The auxiliary fog lights are not working, and there are no auxiliary driving lights, but the car looks driveable. I had a little coolant to pour in, but not enough to restore the car to the road. Yeah those shows annoy me, however I do like An Idiot abroad, made by the team from the UK version of the Office. Yes that is what we like people to believe, so we don't get all these morons buying Mercs because it's trendy or something and then the price goes up and these clowns have no idea of how to properly love a Benz and a lot of nice Benzers will go to the grave prematurley. Re: [MBZ] WAS- 4,000 silly tons Now-Project Merc
I am aware of the downfalls of inexpensive Benz. At this point, it is a matter of trust between my Indy and me. I may piss him off by doing a bunch of digging around to make sure it is as goodly as he posits. I am looking to do a turn and burn to see a little return, but not get rich. The car deserves to be back on the road, instead of wasting away, unloved. The shop does have a really nice example he has just finished renovating. Fresh soft top, Canadian maple, good rubber, rebuilt top end and cleaned up block. The hubcaps are getting color matched to the car. The only drawback I found was the non standard stereo. It spent about 10 years parked in a garage before the owners wanted it rebuilt. Old man and his girl child, it was dead Mom's car. The owners dicked around and got too deep into it, then gave massive attitude, so it became the shop's car when it was 85% ready. I took the car out for a spin. That is one nice ride. Frosch is a sloppy trip compared to this one. Tight and powerful. New owner will want to detail inside and out. About one afternoon investment with rags and goop. All the rest is good as new. The AC may need filling, and the CC is the extinct Ford/Philco. I did not try the AC myself, since it was a short ride. I was looking at CL cars, and the prices are stupid for clapped out cars. This one would be an easy sale at $10k, and worth every dollar. Anybody who wants a turn key car for the spring and summer would be well served. Probably would not need more than washing and waxing until the Autumn oil change and 7k more on the clock. clay On Feb 10, 2014, at 5:35 PM, OK Don wrote: Sounds like a deal that you can't pass up. He is all backed up with more work than he can swing a spanner at. His three lifts are busy and the parking area is over loaded with customer cars. In an attempt to secure a little more parking, he offered me a '77 450SL for little money. A bit more than Kaleb ka$h. He has a few too many R107 on hand and he tried to make it a killer deal for me to take three. I might be able to sneak one past SWMBA. Car is complete, but has not been moved in three years. From the initial inspection, I would have to detail it fully, filters and fluids, charge up the battery, trailer it home for my work, then drag it back to install a fresh fuel pump. He can't get it onto the lifts due to all the customer cars he needs to move along. Re: [MBZ] RIP, Frankenheap?
I did not look too hard, think it is a w123. Bet it makes a really good winter car. They do, and we have one. Just need to fix the (probably) B2. Th local-ish engine-less 115 is a late-style 240D. No wing windows, padded steering wheel, etc. Not as appealing as the older style. The 'new' radiator leaks. When I park I put a jar under it, and pour it back in the radiator before I take off. Good thing I got it going for today, though, there was a _lot_ of fresh snow today, the SL would never have made it home, much less to band and then back home. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] RIP, Frankenheap?
I currently have 3 varieties, all premixed to 50/50 I drove out last night and bought a jug at the grocery store. Ugh. Oh, the 'heap is stuck in the driveway right now, the belly dragged too much in the deep new snow. I had to walk in, carrying all my crap at about 10PM. I'll dig it out tomorrow. Maybe 2 more expected tonight. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
