Re: [MBZ] hi miles

2014-11-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I am curious.
How much work has been done on it over time?

I sold a boat to a fellow who picked it up with a Chevy or GMC pickup
truck with a diesel that had about 800,000 Kil on it so about 500,000
miles but he acknowledged that it had had a lot of work over the years.
I communicated with him a while later and learned that he had retired it
when the transmission gave up some time later.

Re: [MBZ] hi miles

2014-11-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I might be toward the other end of that scale.

My 76 115 300D showed 990 miles on the odometer when I bought it in July
of 2005.
I have no way of knowing if that was just the beginning of the 2nd time
around or not but the car is tight and I would not be surprised if it was.

I know some of its history but only via what the seller told me.
It was purchased locally be an MD who kept it a long while.
He gave up trying to drive it in the winter and ended up storing it with
his barber who lived in an apartment building with underground parking.
He kept it in the underground parking in the winters when it was not
being used.
Ultimately, the barber acquired the car from the MD and I am told the
barber kept it a long while.
The fellow I got it from bought it from the barber. By then there was
some rust and he had some repairs done and had it painted.
He had it a few years but really did not use it and when I happened to
see it in his shop and admire it, he offered to sell it to me.

It now shows about 14 or 15K miles on the odometer so I have only put
about 13 or 14K miles on it in about 9 years.
I drove it quite a bit this past summer but took no long trips so it was
mostly around town.
One previous summer a year or two back, it sat in the garage pretty well
all summer because the front seats, esp driver, were falling apart and I
took them to an upholstery shop and they did not return them until November.

So that year, it likely only got a hundred or two miles on it.

RB who misses driving the car now that winter has come

[MBZ] Fuel prices

2014-11-20 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Speaking of prices, gasoline prices have been dropping here, but diesel
has come down only a little.

Now, it's almost cheaper to drive our Big Red Van than our '82 240D/3.0!

Today at the Mobil station I have been tracking, I saw:

Regular 2.749
Mid 2.879
Premium 2.999
Diesel 3.499

That's the station I've been tracking, but recently we have been buying
our fuel from the Smith's grocery store station, where we can get a
discount because of the points we rack up buying food and such. Monday,
I purchased some premium gasoline for 2.559. I think Smith's is trying
to put the others out of business, too.

IMO the w124s were easier to keep pristine - as yours and mine are. The

I never heard of a Cornwell tool truck, but they used to be pro grade tools and
probably still are. Factories seemed more likely to buy Proto and Cornwell than
Snap-On, MAC or MATCO, and car mechanics tended to get deliveries from the

Since the battery in our '82 240D/3.0 died last week, I went looking for
 a replacement battery for it.

WOW! Have battery prices gone through the roof!

 AutoZone wanted $150 - $175.
 NAPA wanted $184.

Is that the case across the U.S.?
Thanks,

2014-11-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

That sounds very good.
I do not think my F150 will match it.
In the summer, on the highway, I could get 20 to 22 mpg on my runs
from Winnipeg to the lake and back but I am talking about Imperial
gallons so deduct 20% for US gallons.
Not quite so good on my runs from Winnipeg to Grand Forks but that tends
to be wide open spaces and higher speeds so the wind and the higher
speed tend to work against me.
On the highway south the speed limit is 75 and we are usually a bit over
80 mph so that does not help.
I know with the 02 F150 it made a big difference if I kept the speed
down to about 60 mph. Load did not seem to matter but speed did.
The 13 F150 has a solid tonneau cover on the box too and some folks
claim that helps a lot. I have my doubts as to whether the difference is
measurable.
However, I really like it for security and for just keeping things dry
etc. Was well worth the cost.

These days, in town with the cold and short trips, I am doing about 12
mpg - again Imperial gallons.

It was -15 C this morning and is only up to minus 11 now at 3 PM.

Speaking of prices, gasoline prices have been dropping here, but diesel

has come down only a little.

Now, it's almost cheaper to drive our Big Red Van than our '82 240D/3.0!

Today at the Mobil station I have been tracking, I saw:

 Regular2.749
 Mid2.879
 Premium 2.999
 Diesel 3.499

That's the station I've been tracking, but recently we have been buying
our fuel from the Smith's grocery store station, where we can get a
discount because of the points we rack up buying food and such. Monday,
I purchased some premium gasoline for 2.559. I think Smith's is trying
to put the others out of business, too.

[MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel

2014-11-20 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Nation's first large-scale renewable diesel plant reopens under new owner

Published: Thursday, November 20, 2014

The first large-scale renewable diesel facility in the United States is up
and running again, new owner Renewable Energy Group Inc. announced
yesterday.

REG marked the startup of the facility in Geismar, La., yesterday with a
grand-opening event after beginning initial production Oct. 14. At full
capacity, the biorefinery will be able to produce 75 million gallons a year
of renewable diesel, a type of biofuel that can be used directly in
existing fuel infrastructure, out of animal fats, corn oil and used cooking
oil.

The facility will use a technology developed by a subsidiary of REG in
Tulsa, Okla. Along with renewable diesel, the biorefinery is capable of
producing naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas, REG said.

REG acquired the former Dynamic Fuels LLC facility in June from Tyson Foods
Inc. and Syntroleum Corp., which formed Dynamic in 2007 as a 50-50 joint
venture.

While the former owners completed construction of the plant, they idled
operation in late 2012 for maintenance and upgrade. By the end of fiscal
2013, the plant had incurred net operating losses of approximately $38
million, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

We are pleased with the progress made and will continue to build upon our
success with future planned upgrades to the plant, Derek Winkel, REG
executive director of manufacturing operations, said in a statement.

REG is the nation's largest biodiesel producer and has recently expanded
into several new markets, including renewable diesel, detergents and
personal care, and petroleum-based heating oil and diesel.

Tyson controls a lot of the chicken fat in the country, but 75

but reported total sales of yellow grease in the US was somewhere

Some is not reported, but that plant will drive up the price of
yellow grease, if it operates.

Re: [MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel

2014-11-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Renewable is a manufactured happy word to impart the idea the fuel , or
energy source, doesn't come from nasty crude oil ... or God forbid, coal...
or, worst of all nuclear...

In the case of biodiesel, it's meant to impart the idea that it is taken
from a growing plant that can be regrown [without any inclusion of the
depletion of soil, water, or cost in crude oil to run the tractors and
harvesting equipment to grow the plant.. ]

Think happy thoughts.. hum Kum Ba Ya.. and all will be well ...

Investigation will show the large biodiesel plant failed to make a profit
as soon as government subsidy for renewable energy ran out.. I can say
with some authority, having designed and built a biodiesel plant with
20,000,000 gallon per month capacity, in 2007... raw material supply of
vegetable oil in that quantity is a serious problem.. Most biodiesel plants
left standing will tell you then need raw product to make biodiesel with
and can't get it..

It is not a perfect world... I discovered I have OCD ADD ... Everything
has to be exactly perfect.. but only for a minute... ;))

14. At full
capacity, the biorefinery will be able to produce 75 million gallons a
 year
of renewable diesel, a type of biofuel that can be used directly in
existing fuel infrastructure, out of animal fats, corn oil and used
 cooking
 oil.

The facility will use a technology developed by a subsidiary of REG in
Tulsa, Okla. Along with renewable diesel, the biorefinery is capable of
producing naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas, REG said.

REG acquired the former Dynamic Fuels LLC facility in June from Tyson
 Foods
Inc. and Syntroleum Corp., which formed Dynamic in 2007 as a 50-50 joint

WOW.  Batteries have gone up more than my Obamacare insurance.  I purchased
Bosch group 49 from PepBoys for both of my old 617s.  They prorated one this
summer that my alternator ruined, so it must have been within their 3 yr
warranty and it was $109 or $119 when I purchased it.  They are now $179.  What
is going on in the battery market?  Are batteries trying to keep up with motor
oil prices?
Good luck Craig on whatever you get.  I really like the Bosch, but I may not be
able to afford them the next time around.

Lead cost? I understand that all US smelting was shut down in 2013 for
environmental reasons:
http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/16881-epa-closure-of-last-lead-smelting-plant-to-impact-ammunition-production

I guess lead has other applications (other than ammo). There is a lot of new
non-lead ammo available these days. Probably not so many non-lead batteries.

For box end wrenches HF is impossible to beat. Their 9 piece sets are cheap
cheap and as near as I can tell indestructible. I've got 3 sets and have never
broken one. I have a couple of the 32 piece sets which are even cheaper per
wrench but stop one size short going up, I'd rather have a larger number of the
smaller sets for a little more money.

and probably still are. Factories seemed more likely to buy Proto and
Cornwell than Snap-On, MAC or MATCO, and car mechanics tended to get
deliveries from the latter three. (but I can count my lifetime MATCO truck
sightings on one hand, not that common here in Michigan)

What's the difference between a group 49 and the cheaper one?

Or, if you buy the other size (84 maybe?) it will be 80-90 wiht the
discount. Same CCA and it fits like a group 49. a couple mm difference in
the case, be WAY cheaper than a group 49.

Batteries and tars: prices are crazy high.

Since the battery in our '82 240D/3.0 died last week, I went looking for
 a replacement battery for it.

WOW! Have battery prices gone through the roof!

 AutoZone wanted $150 - $175.
 NAPA wanted $184.

Is that the case across the U.S.?

 Thanks,

Well it says something when I can take dead batteries from parts cars down to
the crusher and they pay $15 each.

group 31 batteries to use as the solar battery bank.

The answers I got seems to make sense. 1. Lead is now an EPA controlled
substance which requires draconian handling rules and systems be in place
for the manufacturers. 2. Many battery manufacturers have gone out of
business in the past 5 to 8 years so even if a battery carries a brand
name it is likely made by one of only two companies that now totally
 dominate the market.

Old capitalism rule.. competition breeds product pricing competition. What
we had no longer exists, thus, price goes up..

Add to that, the production of new lead from mines has been shut down [EPA
draconian rules again] so scarcity of raw material is perceived to drive up
 cost to build.

Thought about installing 2 in parallel ($58.xx) so car would still start

Group 93 fits and can be the same CCA it is a couple mm different,
but a bunch cheaper the last time I bought one. No idea why there
are 2 sizes that are essentially the same, but one is 10-20% cheaper.

Re: [MBZ] Renewable Biodiesel

2014-11-20 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
To me, the best manifestation of renewable is recycled/repurposed
materials. In other words, take a waste product with a high environmental
cost to dispose of up and transform it into usable fuel. Poultry fat, used
motor oil, and spent cooking oil all qualify under this definition, more so
than crops grown for the express purpose of creating biodiesel or ethanol.

[MBZ] ANY CALIF FOLKS?

2014-11-20 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
If you are in Calif, maybe you can help me. I have a 240D that is in
good shape but has no title. It was abandoned in a storage unit in
Lancaster area. I have a form INF-70 from Cal DMV, and it asks for
permissible use of the form, but the instructions don't list trying
to trace a title as a permissible use. The lady at Cal-DMV said this
was the form, and it will get me the info.I need to find out what
to put in the permissible use part of the form, and if there is a
way to get the address of the registered previous owner.

Is there an email address for Cal DMV? It has taken me weeks to
finally get through to a person by phone. So far I can't find any on
their website. This would probably not take too much time if I could
get through on the phone. If you are a Calif. lawyer, that is even
better.

Thanks
