Playing the LP wet can make an amazing improvement in surface noise - but the water will creep up the stylus and can damage the cartridge so I play mine dry. Or is the .wav way to big to do this? It seems to me that other than file size, the .wav might be the closest in quality to the original vinyl. I had not heard of this flac file type before. I gather it is a digital more or less equivalent to the .wav file. The lock is NOT stuck and works perfectly above 32 degrees. I will check on the keyhole flap issue and see if the PS door handle works below freezing. Re: [MBZ] Frozen door lock - wt*?
"Freezes up" or gets stuck? I've been in Maryland for a week where its not been below freezing. I'd suggest pulling it out which is actually pretty easy. The door handle is held with 3 screws one of which is inside the door and requires pulling the inner panel. You'll need to be able to turn the key to get the attachment from the lock to the latch out so don't wait until its stuck full time. Getting the lock cylinder out requires pushing out a roll pin, its pretty easy. Then pull the cylinder, do it inside a plastic bag, the lock wafer springs might *sproing* when you pull it apart. Carefully push out each wafer with a small screwdriver, theres a spring under there, be careful. Wash each wafer down with carb cleaner, do the same for the spring. KEEP THEM IN ORDER. Then wash down the lock cylinder. Reassemble with some of this: http://www2.dupont.com/Consumer_Lubricants/en_US/products/lock_lubricant.html which is the best lock lube I've ever used. Done yearly your locks won't freeze even if the little door is missing... Yes, in a sense. Even a small amount of moisture in the right place in the lock cylinder can freeze and prevent it from moving. Yes. That the passenger door lock has moisture in it as well. Yeah, but I have never been able to hear quality sound improvement of vinyl over digital. Much of our collection other than classical music has been rode hard and put away wet. Re: [MBZ] Frozen door lock - wt*?
And when it is dry, spray some lock eze into it. I suspect your little door is bent, bad or broken. When it rained sideways then froze hard a couple weeks ago, my 240D would not unlock because the vacuum had leaked down, so the trunk lock would not open everything, the passenger door lock was not replaced with the original when an incompetent body shop replaced the door, so the key does not work in it and the drivers door lock got water in it and was frozen. I solved the problem by warming the lock with my hands. Part of the problem is that it's never going to dry out if you keep pouring water into it. I doubt very much your window scraper is bad or letting water get to the lock. You need to remove the door handle (easy 30 second job), take it inside and get it good and warm, then clean the lock cylinder as Craig suggested. Better yet, swap door handles between driver's and passenger door. They're interchangeable, and it's like having a brand new handle and lock on your driver's door. So what you're saying is that water is TRAPPED inside the lock and cannot escape even after 5 straight rain-free? If the "little door" covering the key hole is missing, would that allow moisture to penetrate? If I swapped handles and the problem persisted what would that tell me? Yes! I have even had identical hard drives in different machines die within days of each other. These were seagate ide. It appears they had a "cyanide pill" programmed into the software to kill the drive after 10 years. I don't believe that each drive just happened to die of natural causes within days of each other. The order in which they died was exactly in the order of production, and 10 years after production. I have older hitachi/ibm ide drives still working. Not that I know, but then again, I buy enterprise grade drives for my RAIDs. I guess the consumer grade stuff could be wonky like that. I can remember when I was somewhat of an audiophile that one could still prefer vinyl over a CD played via a Mark Levinson ($25K) CD player, so I can't relate to the interest(s) in converting to digital files. Other than live performances, I prefer good recordings played back via good equipment. G. M. [MBZ] Ponomusic. Opinions?
Ponomusic ( https://ponomusic.force.com/ ) is a high def music project backed by Neil Young. Its an inline lossless digital music player, due to ship Q1 2015 at $400 a pop. Their library is rather limited at the moment, but they plan on expanding rapidly as more licensing agreements are signed with artists and publishers. That aside, they claim to at least attempt to improve the throughput quality of non-lossless files -- even mp3's -- as well, meaning you don't necessarily have to buy their remastered files for it to work, with the aforementioned caveats on output quality. Their files are extremely dense, turning what would be a 3-4 meg mp3 into 50-60 meg file, if memory serves. Their current players are expandable to 128 G -- 64 G on board, with a 64 G slot So, is this a game changer in high-def listening, or a well-intentioned but ultimately non contributory measure to improve the art? If you want to store the files on a hard drive, and never need to make a cd or dvd, (or mp3 player) wouldn't it be possible to save the file as a .wav analog file and play that on demand? Or is the .wav way to big to do this? It seems to me that other than file size, the .wav might be the closest in quality to the original vinyl. I had not heard of this flac file type before. I gather it is a digital more or less equivalent to the .wav file. Is that correct?
