Arc Welding I
Gas Metal Arc Weld. Ferrous I
Flux Cored Arc Welding I
Tungsten Arc Welding

I think I would want Flux Cored? The descriptions are minimal, but
that would be for wire welders?

Take 'em all! For welding on rusty cars, #3 seems to work for me.

There is no education system that can teach someone to think. Either they
will, or they won't. The education system can give those who are capable
the tools they need to not have to re-invent the wheel. The rest can only
be made to be (hopefully) functional enough to do what the thinkers want
them to do. It has been this way forever - it's the human condition.

The ML had one of those trannies - Kaleb has it now. You just pried off the
cap on what should have been the dip stick tube, and poof - a serviceable
tranny. You then buy the universal tranny dip stick (from Q at that time)
and you're in business.

I think there is a law about having to support a product for 7 years. it
doesn't say that the price of those parts has to be reasonable, nor that
they will be in stock at your local dealer, but should not be
un-attainable. We used to hammer computer companies about that all the
time. They could get 6 and 7 year old motherboards for us, but they would
be VERY expensive.

Yep, and we drive MBs. And MB decided that transmissions should be
sealed. "No user serviceable components" I never bought one of
those cars, and I never bought that line.

I am not defending or supporting Apple or the iCoulomb or iFahrad. I
am just passing on news and adding possible names.

I intend that one of my 240Ds will be the last car I drive. It is
user serviceable

I am typing this on a macbook pro that has performed flawlessly for 4
years and going. If it needs a drive or other service, I will do it
myself. Last time I had to buy a set of jewelers screwdrivers
different from what I had. I did stick more memory in it. It went
together, it will come apart.

Remember its Apple we're talking about. The whole engine (motor I
guess) compartment will be glued shut, there will be no user
serviceable components.
I'm typing this on an Macbook Pro that has no openings for the drive
or the battery. If either fails it'll be a bugger to replace. The
newest iMacs are worse. Wasn't there one Macbook that literally was
glued shut?
I seem to remember there being a law about carmakers providing 10
years of spare parts.

Now if they'd made it with a diesel engine they'd be able to see some real

I vote they buy up the Chevy Volt and after spending billions to make it
work, re-badge it as the I-Fail...

Instead of people camping out to get in line to get one, they could make
camping equipment part of the design package so you would have a shelter
when it dies and leaves you stranded. Marketing people could sell that..
yeah.. The kit could come with scissors so you could cut grass, go green,
and not go hungry..

I love the sound track - it makes the installation seem so carefree and easy.

The steps that are critical are not shown - starting the initial drill hole and
pounding in the bolt from start to finish in a VERTICAL orientation..  I would
probably be bouncing the bit all over the place as it refused to dig into the
floor.

Other than that, I want one badly.

I'm sure you could pay a professional to install it.

I'm also tempted. I have a very high ceiling in my garage, but the garage
doors hang low. If I changed my garage doors, I could probably install a
full-size lift, but I'd probably also have to do some concrete work, not sure
of thickness of my garage floor pad.

Or just buy a four post. Safer, more practical as you can safely store cars
underneath and use a bridge jack ( I think that's what it's called) if you want
to do a repair with wheels off the ramp.

I love the sound track - it makes the installation seem so carefree and
easy.

The steps that are critical are not shown - starting the initial drill hole
and pounding in the bolt from start to finish in a VERTICAL orientation..
I would probably be bouncing the bit all over the place as it refused to

Other than that, I want one badly.

2015-02-16 Thread Addison Thompson via Mercedes
Andrew,
Are you just fooling around with us or do you really believe that the lunar
landing photos were faked?
I can tell you that I worked for Buzz Aldrin in 1972 and I knew Neal Armstrong
(last talked to him in 2007). If they faked the landing they certainly did a
great job of continuing the charade for many years.
Surely you don't REALLY believe the landings were faked…..

Curt, you just don't get it. The same folks who faked the lunar landing
photos have figured out a way to make it appear that the ice caps are
melting and glaciers are receding. They are being funded by latte-guzzling
liberals who want you to drive a Prius.

Right; shouldn't have been hard at all until I couldn't remember the passwords
for Norton and email. Then, I had to talk to TWC (ISP). Trying to get # for
'em, I found "twconlinehelp.com" with a phone # amongst other legitimate TWC
listings. The # is for the scamming SOB in Singapore who presented himself as
a TWC agent.

Nothing is hard if ya have all the answers. A problem is not a problem once it

Difficult on the iPad or getting to legitimate TWC agent? Difficulty on iPad
is to keep shaky hands from touching stuff I don' want. I spend a LOT -A LOT-
of time correcting stuff that gets in accidentally.

Also, the email format I'm using now is not nearly as versatile as what I've
been using.
'Course part of it is not being used to it

Setting up new computer would not have been hard at all if I had remembered
pswrds for email and Norton Security.

SOB in Singapore portrayed himself as TWC agent, took control of my computer,
got me to give 'I'm c card # and 'don't know what else he may have done to
read/see everything I may do in future.

The W115 220D had a short hood and was straight across between the
headlights and across the radiator support. The W115 300D ('75 & '76) had a
longer hood and the radiator support was a few inches in front of the line
across the headlights - to accommodate the longer OM617 engine. I would
think that the 110 could be similar for different engines.

The '70 W115 220D that was our first MB had 4 on the tree. you pulled out
on the shifter for reverse, but I can't remember if it was towards or away
from you. A friend's father had a '65 W110 220 (?) with a six cylinder and
4 on the tree.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding learnings

I've wanting to get into arc welding of some sort, and started watching the
various videos at
http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/mig-welding-videos.html (send by Grant
a few days ago?). I decided that for lighter metal and around the house, a
115 volt MIG/Flux core wire welder is all I need. If you buy the one that
can accept a spool gun and gas, you can also weld aluminum, but the range
of gauges is limited to .050 to .075 or so. Probably good enough to
fabricate gas tanks, etc.

You might need to be able to read/speak English to take/pass the code test.

to OK that it needed a water pump. He ended up working with his father to
machine a new part for the water pump in addition to installing new
bearings and seals. Saved $2000 doing that. It was missing a hub cap, and

Re: [MBZ] This baffles me

2015-02-16 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Actually more reading on the reviews shows it requires bolts in the
floor to hold the posts, which sorta defeats the purpose of having
"portable" lifts, though I suppose if you unbolt them and move them they
would be OK. Would have to put nuts or something in the floor though so
no studs sticking up to punch tires. And there are requirements for
floor thickness and concrete strength, which I would be concerned about
unless I poured proper footings for it. It seems useful though for a
regular garage, you can get the car lifted up to 4ft (or until it hits
the ceiling I guess) which gives some good room for a lot of jobs though
you would still be kinda hunched over or on a creeper. I see used lifts
for about $2k or less on CL occasionally, but they are the high-lift
ones so you would need a high ceiling for them.

[MBZ] OT Welding learnings

2015-02-16 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
The local tech college teaches welding of various sorts. I am thinking
to take a class. I just turned 60 (!!!) so it is free except for the
materials fee. The choices are:

Arc Welding I
Gas Metal Arc Weld. Ferrous I
Flux Cored Arc Welding I
Tungsten Arc Welding

I think I would want Flux Cored? The descriptions are minimal, but that
would be for wire welders?

A buddy of mine, a retired doctor, is taking baking classes as a hobby.
They wanted him to take freshman English and participate in the dining
room service to round out his education. He has been going round and
round with them about all that, stuck in the bureaucracy. He doesn't
want a degree in baking, just learn techniques and such. I probably
would not need english to weld?

You need something Like this:

I used to have a little black box that went inline with the POTS line that
would pause the off hook signal or something to that effect. It disrupted
recorded calls somehow by doing this.

I just look at the caller ID and if I don't recognize it I ignore the call.

If they are recorded messages just ignore them if the caller ID shows no
info or some random number from somewhere. If the answering machine
gets it they stop. If it is a person, like "Technical Services" calling

if they are sending the bomb, when is the martyrdom operation inshallah,
is washington dc the target, throw in a few obamas. They have not

Don't scoff if you've never been driving in DC during rush hour.
People commute more than two hours to get to work, and traffic often
grid-locks in good weather. Wet snow packing down to ice on the
freeway makes it really bad, and inadequate funding from Congress
for road clearing doesn't help a bit.

How's that go? Your failure to plan ahead does not constitute a
crisis for me?

DC's lack of planning and preparedness does not constitute a crisis for me.

It has snowed regularly in the area where DC is for eons. Nothing
new there. Failure to plan and prepare in DC... nothing new there
either. Its run by the slickest shysters money can buy.

Nope! the v-12 is problematic and expensive, like the M100 club

I'd sooner pay that for a good 300SDL. Its a better car with a
better engine. (and less electronics)

It's not an issue of inadequate funding for road clearing -- it makes no
sense to spend huge amounts of money on something that might be
necessary once or twice a year. But then again, it's the federal
gummint, so disregard my comment...

[MBZ] SL

2015-02-16 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

Anybody looking for a 560SL? A co-worker's moving to London,
and is lightening the load. Smoke silver (possibly a repaint),
120kmi or so, meticulously maintained. Needs very little.
He's been asking $7k looking for a quick sale, he figured it
was a $10-12k car. Located in or about Spokane, WA USA.
He bought it from the dealer, they had it parked inside in
the showroom.
