[MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Youngest son calls this morning. Not usually a good thing at this hour.

Had a Jeep Cherokee cut in front of him, he hit the brakes but still ended up
hitting them with the front left corner of the car. Jeep bumper smashed
headlight, crumpled hood and fender, no other damage and car is definitely
drivable. That's why we drive these cars, guys.

Boy is perfectly fine, but understandably bummed/pissed.

Poop.

So now I am faced with the following for a $3,000.00 car with a salvage title:

1.) Find a hood, fender and headlight. Headlight is easy, not sure about hood
and fender. Gotta call a local recycler to see if they can find anything and
how much it would be.

2.) Beat the panels out, replace the headlight and turn indicator and let him
drive it like that.

3.) Retire the car and find something else.

So, anyone know of a decent W140 or maybe an E class, something of that sort?
How's about a W140 that someone is parting out?

#2 will probably take place in the interim anyway, just so he has wheels.

I've never sourced body parts before, but I'm thinking that something as big as
a hood is going to be expensive if it's got to be shipped.

Dang it.

To be honest, I don't think it's going to make a lot of sense to put any money

probably bear out just getting another car. Ideally I would like to get him in
something a little more economical like a six cylinder since he's commuting to

Yeah. Junk like stuff cobbled together is a rat rod. The
complete body, including hood and roof, of one car with a
not-so-very-uncommon engine swap does not seem to fit the
definition.

The hood and front fenders from the 240S attached to a F-250
pickup frame and a chevy small block - that could be a rat rod.

I have seen them both ways.
Usually, semi gloss or satin black paint, or no paint.
Some are really odd combinations and some are fairly complete original
cars just painted black and somewhat junkyard looking.
Others have had a whole lot of careful work done to make them look like
they are junk when they really are not.

I have some photos of an MB that was offered for sale here that is sort
of a rat rod. I will try to remember to post them here.

This is where the economics as well as logistics kick in. The cost for fuel,

If Kaleb were closer it might make sense, but between having to take PTO at

Re: [MBZ] S500 Ouchies

2015-07-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

So the po lice/insco will say it is his fault for being young and male. Nice!

Youngest son calls this morning. Not usually a good thing at this hour.

Had a Jeep Cherokee cut in front of him, he hit the brakes but still
ended up hitting them with the front left corner of the car. Jeep
bumper smashed headlight, crumpled hood and fender, no other damage
and car is definitely drivable. That's why we drive these cars,
guys.

Boy is perfectly fine, but understandably bummed/pissed.

Poop.

So now I am faced with the following for a $3,000.00 car with a salvage title:

1.) Find a hood, fender and headlight. Headlight is easy, not sure
about hood and fender. Gotta call a local recycler to see if they
can find anything and how much it would be.

2.) Beat the panels out, replace the headlight and turn indicator
and let him drive it like that.

3.) Retire the car and find something else.

So, anyone know of a decent W140 or maybe an E class, something of
that sort? How's about a W140 that someone is parting out?

#2 will probably take place in the interim anyway, just so he has wheels.

I've never sourced body parts before, but I'm thinking that
something as big as a hood is going to be expensive if it's got to
be shipped.

Dang it.

Wasn't there a nice green W124/OM606 on Benzworld recently in Ann Arbor or
something like that?

To be honest, I don't think it's going to make a lot of sense to put any money
into this car at this point. It pains me to say that, but the economics
probably bear out just getting another car. Ideally I would like to get him in
something a little more economical like a six cylinder since he's commuting to
school this coming year. That's why I mentioned an E class.

I was able to extract the headlight assembly and straighten out the little
portion of the radiator support that is forward of the oval opening in the
support back to pretty much original position. At this point I’ll source a
replacement headlight to get him mobile and we’ll go from there.

If things had gone back another inch we would have lost AC and one or both of
the ignition coils. The boy is living right…

I removed the fuse placard and carefully cleaned away the soot and
scorching as best I can. I have deciphered the fuse #7 list to
read: backup lamp, heating water valve, water pump, engine fan,
heating system for washer jets, climate control system, relay aux
fan term. 86, auto. trans. electrics, blower motor inside temp.
sensor, air cond. compressor. (I filled in several obscured words

SWMBO came in from short trip in the '87 300D, leaned over back of
chair in cool living room where I was napping and announced,
Blown fuse in the car. I was driving along with air conditioning
blasting away nicely, and it just quit. Don't ya think it's a
blown fuse?

I replied, Yep; sure hope that's all it is. 'Hobbled out to car
thinking 30 amp blower fuse had blown. Loosened the two mounting
screws thinking the fuse would fall apart as I removed it, but it
did not. Checked fuses in fuse box; 'found #7 (for compressor and
coupla other things) blown. Because of my shaky hands, called
SWMBO to help me put blower fuse back in place and RR #7. A/C
blowing ice cold again.

BTW, I did NOT change ALL the fuses. ;)

He certainly won’t look a gift horse in the mouth no matter what, but I would

if he has some choice.

Otherwise I would put him in a Ford Focus until he’s out of college….
