The design I'm thinking of would clamp to the edge of the trunk at the side
seam and perhaps be the length of the straight portion of the trunk lid, so
there was plenty of good solid support that wouldn't come loose in heat,
like a suction cup will eventually.
Same clamping system for the door
I've considered such mounted to side of the drain channel beneath side of
trunk lid, too, so as not to affect trunk lid operation - remain fixed.

Thanks Wilton, I considered that route as well, however after some study
and measurement [happen to have a few Mercedes around to measure] I find
clamping anything to the drain channel would disrupt the trunk seal rubber
and breach the trunk seal in a way that could generate a leak path. So, my
Car just needs to be white!
The license plate mounts are pretty stout. I wonder if a heavy
sheet metal dingus could be fabbed that screwed behind the
plate, and had 1/2" grab bars coming out of it, up and across the
back of the trunk, and perhaps around the edge a bit. They'd
need to be white.
I think that's what I decided about drain channel, too - likely why I
haven't done anything with that. ;>)
