We drove 7125.5 miles in 2018 going from New Mexico to the east coast,
down and up the east coast, through the midwest, and back to New Mexico.

Newport Beach, CA, to Washington, D.C., is only 2648 miles or 2675 miles
depending upon whether he goes the northern route or the southern route.

If he pushes it, he could do it in three days. Relaxed driving could take
a week.

I'm thinking about a trip to Arkansas next year for the snow goose
conservation hunt. Looks like just under 1500 miles each way, about 48 hours of
driving total round trip. Probably do it in 2 days each way with a friend.
I should look into flying too, not sure how much the airline would charge me to
ship a cooler full of goose meat.

2020-02-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
For the conservation hunt (specifically to remove snow geese) you don't need
one, just need a hunting license in some state. You also don't need a federal
waterfowl stamp although I've got one anyway.
During the conservation hunt there are no limits on geese shot, no limit on
shells in the gun which is normally limited to 3. Hunting starts 30 minutes
before sunrise and continues until 30 minutes after sunset when its normally
sunrise to sunset.
Obviously this hunt is not for conservation of snow geese, its conservation of
everything else by eliminating snow geese...

I would doubt their expertise. 99.9% of body shops do not know how to or care
to know how to fix rust. And FYI the outer and lower door bottoms are available
from fixmyrust.com for cheap. Problem is that the monkey at the body shop is
incapable of properly welding in the patch panels in a manner that would
prevent the doors from rusting through again in one year.

Yes, serpentine belts are wonderful things.

I just finished changing oil, filter and the interior charcoal filters on my

And it was one of those not so rare, warm February days here, too. Looks like

Butt weld the panels into place taking care to achieve good fit. Metal finish
the seam as best as possible considering obstructions inside door, use weld
thru primer where appropriate, protect the backside of the weld using an epoxy
primer or por-15, use seam sealer, spray the inside of the repair area with
body cavity wax or fluid film.

[MBZ] Contact from NZ

2020-02-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A short while back Randy was asking about past list participants. Recently
I was contacted by Euan from New Zealand, he's still got his 123 wagon
(non-turbo, right-hand drive, 5 speed manual trans) and is about to retire.
Says hello, may be joining us on the list again.

2020-02-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

1985 R107 M116 engine. 380SL.

I think if you took out the booster you might be able to get the valve
cover off.  I can't remember the impediments now.   I did change the
booster, but it was a pig of a job.  I was not about to take the booster
out to get the valve cover off.  I didn't HAVE to take it off.  I took
it loose, and then discovered there was no way to get it out.   Put it
back on.

Are you talking about the R107? Because if you are, I had no problems with
R&R either the valve covers or the vacuum brake booster in the 450 SLC ---

Re: [MBZ] OT Stock Market

2020-02-12 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
So I think you are right about the winds last Friday, on Saturday I noted
there was a lot of trucks pulling containers again. However today, no
wind, and truck traffic was down again.

Market keeps going up up up, new highs nearly every day. Maybe I was
pre-mature, but I'm still going to keep the cash that I took out last week,
which was a small percentage of my portfolio.

Read an article to today about the norks, they are denying that they have
any cases of Kung Flu to report, so that doesn't portend well given that
they share a border with China.

I still mourn the demise of my /8 220D. Other than the floor cancer and other
tin worm issues, she was a joy to drive. Manual, no options, just worked. I
did take her on the freeway quite a bit and she had no issue keeping up with
traffic and even hit her near redline of 84mph for ten miles on a barren
stretch of road. She was much happier at 70.

2020-02-12 Thread Clay via Mercedes
There may be trouble in minds of bidders over the DJetronic system. Very
fiddly if touched by an idiot and there is diminished stock of people able to
set the early electronic injection right. That and the rarity of new injectors
with attendant high cost. I scored the last six that the CC had when I was
having the SL rejuvenated. Two injectors had massive leakage, and I thought it
best to resolve it in one step instead of going back in multiple times later.
IIRC, I was charged around $280 per unit. I had replaced two injectors a few
years before when I had my indy defornicate the work done by a “Euro” shoppe
the local section had a tech event at. I made the mistake of having them do a
tune/misfire job at the 25% “savings” offered. Cost me $4k for their ham
handed work and the proper resolution.

Yes, the window switches are paired in the later cars. Front left, rear right,
and vice versa. Could be dirty switches or degraded wiring. Door open and
close a bunch on the rear doors tends to tweek the wires on the w126 cars I
worked with.

from Rockville Md.   Easy.  call em up, drive down. haul it back, and
put it on.

If you call around, you might find one closer or cheaper. but that is a
fair one to start with.

[MBZ] OT: IP Cams, WAS W124 300D alternator replacement?

2020-02-12 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Dan, I think it was you who got me interested in home security cameras so I
thought I'd share these results.

I did a side-by side comparison of four IP cameras ranging from a cheap (<$50)
Reolink 5M cam to a new (>$150) 4M Dahua HDW5442TM-AS. They are all "eyeball"
style IP cameras. Here is a link to day and night images (zoom in for detail):

IMO, all the daylight pics are OK but the 2M and 4M Dahua starlight cams were
significantly sharper at night, especially for a moving person (although not in
these images).
