Nope... only Casey has an intercooled 603 on this list, AFAIK. I'm
experimenting with increasing power without an intercooler for now
(watching intake air and exhaust gast temp gauges closely). Soon's I
find me an AMG front bumper to hide a Casey-style intercooler, though,
look out!

Re: [MBZ] epc?

2006-03-19 Thread Dave M.
Sunil,

That first number appears to be an accessory part number, which
normally start with 'B' and have 8 digits following. Haven't seen one
with a BQ and 7 digits, but that number does show up on the price list
as sheepskin seat covers (unknown fitment), list price of $259 as of
last May.

The other number is not an MB number. Most accessory numbers are not
searchable in the EPC and most are not in the EPC at all. The EPC is
intended for replacement parts, not accessories.

Hell if I had known the drought would end when you started to put the engine
back in I would have come over and helped you get it finished so we could
get some rain!!! LOL (c:

And what does rain have to do with not putting an engine back in a car. I
have put VW engines in with it raining, snowing. I remember one time I laid
in an inch and a half of water while we put the engine back in a VW bus. The
other guy thought I had the bad end of the job, but I was out of the rain
under the bus! He just did not know what a sweet deal I had. Of course I was
in my 20's, poor, no garage, and had to have the bus to get to work the next
day.

Who says the good old days aren't good!!!

[MBZ] Today's mission

2006-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond
Just replaced the driver's door check strap on the 190D. Relatively easy job
although theres not a whole lot of space inside the door to manuver.
Question: Was I supposed to leave the plastic sleeve on it or is that just
for shipping? I left it on though the one I pulled out didn't have one. Nice to
have some resistance when I open the door, the old one was totally shot.
Right now I'm reglueing (again) the door skin. 2 of the hooks I'd glued back
to the pressboard had come loose. It appears that shoe goo doesn't penetrate
the pressboard at all. I used "Dr. Bond" a superglue like substance and good
old carpenter's glue this time. I also made a replacement for one of the hooks
I'd broken off. Bent a pop rivet around into approximately the right shape and
shoe gooed it into place. Its ugly but if it works a little I'll consider it a
success.

Took the 190D down to the diner for breakfast this morning, I'm calling the
seat a success, its very comfy now. Fueled up and got a carwash. The carwash
seems to have washed off some paint and bent the antenna... I can't yet tell if
the carwash was over aggressive or if the paint on the car is weak, a bit of
both I'd guess. The car does need a little bodywork, the jackpoints have rusted
and were painted so it was hard to tell... Normally I'd fiberglass and call it
good enough but I may need those jackpoints someday.

The issue isn't that they can't make internal changes to prevent
problems. The issue is any apology or admission of guilt opens them up
to a damage award later, since a lawsuit no longer has to prove they did
something wrong -- they already admitted it. My auto insurance company
also cautions that you should never apologize or admit guilt after an
accident.

One of the more interesting parts of the medical malpractice reform law
that recently passed here in Washington is a clause that allows doctors
to apologize for mistakes without taking on liability.

I very nearly had that happen when I bought my VW Cabriolet. After
driving it around a little I started to notice a clunking noise from the
front. I was having new engine mounts put in anyway, so I asked the
mechanic to check it out, thinking a CV might be going bad. It turned
out all the left front lug nuts were loose! VW wheels are hub-centric
so you don't get much warning until the thing is just about ready to
fall off. He also found the starter bolts were all loose. Makes me
wonder who the PO had working on that car.

Re: [MBZ] 1990 Mercedes Benz 300D 2.5 Turbodiesel

2006-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond
S'matter of fact I know where there is one. I don't know if its in any kind of
shape or actually for sale but its on a lot and has no plates. At least it was
there a month ago...
I can go check on it next weekend if you like.

For what its worth my '81 300TD was an outstanding driving car excepting that
it was a basket case. I'd love to have one that wasn't entirely beat to snot. I
know a guy thats got an older pre-turbo one with a 4spd. I need to get a chance
to get behind the wheel of it.

I am really wanting to drive the 87 TD. I haven't found anyone with
one
around here yet. I think the 2.5 is fast. Anyone have one in RI or
MA?
I'd like to see one.

So I did finally get finished, just no chance to post an update.
Getting the seat back in was a BEAR. The nuts are those clip on things and
they kept sliding out of the way. Finally had to go out and get a 1/4" ujoint
socket as there was no way to get the rear bolts in without it. With the ujoint
it was no big deal. Seat is now very comfortable. I spend at least 8 hours a
week in that seat so this will be very nice.
While I was at it I filled a hole in the upholstry with Shoe Goo and covered
some thinning MBTex in the back rest with some too. Hopefully that'll keep it
from erodeing. I'd have changed it if I'd noticed before I got started... I'd
hate to do that job again so I'm hoping for the best.

The keys I found weren't even Mercedes keys, 2 housekeys and 2 GM car keys.
Into the trash with them...

Curt-way to go. Fixing the seat in my 240D was the best investment I
ever made. I spend about 6-12 hours a week in that seat and wish I had
fixed it when I got the car t instead of doing the spring padding, etc.
Were any of those keys steel keys? Can't wait to see it at the

When is the last time you checked the bulbs on your license plate light?

That is a "reason" the cops here use to pull cars over.

Bulbs on the VW were both bad (fixed that today for eighty-three cents).
Benz and Sunbird are fine, one of two bulbs out on the Buick.

And no, I didn't get pulled over. It was just something I noticed and
fixed before I did.

I dont' find anything - get "invalid KB code" when I try those. You
are supposed to be in the appropriate catalog (engine or chassis,

don't lok like typical MB p/ns.

Well, I'll be...it appears as if the OM606 engines did away with the
oil sump wing-extension. I suppose alternatively, you could go in
through the oil level sending unit with a flexible extension handle
magnet to grab the detritus. In addition, you could glue a few of
those powerful rare earth magnets to the side and bottom of the pan,
in hopes keeping any remaining marbles in place.

Undo the 3 nuts attaching the front exhaust pipe to the turbo, you
may have to drop the bracket by the bell housing, then look inside. A
mirror may come in handy.

What's the proceedure for
the baffle epoxy?

Pull the valve cover off, clean it real good to remove any oily
residue, you will see the baffle plate. There may already be some
type of sealer there. If so remove it, clean with solvent again and
seal it to the valve cover. There will be an obvious gap. This serves
to better keep oil flying off the cam from being able to get to the
breather.
I recommend JB-Weld as it is impervious to most fuels, lubricants
and solvents when it cures. Recheck the valve lash, then re-do your
compression test, if you can, keep a charger hooked up as you will
need to sufficiently crank the engine for each cylinder. This can be
done with the valve cover off if you so desire.

Rear bumper is free of oil.

Well, it's claimed to be faster than the VW equivalent.
I think the VW One Liter Car is rated at 8hp, is not
a hybrid, and tops out around 70-80mph on the flat with
rapid loss of speed on hills.

Fuel is a lot cheaper in Idaho, in case you're curious. Effectively
the car is 'done', though there are a few small things left to do.
I'm into it a conservative 80 hours of labor, and the expenses
(including acquisition) are a hair under $1000.

(Hmm, motor mounts, restoring the AC, and a CLA on the sunroof
are still on the list. Maybe not so small. Sigh.)

I doubt this is going to make much money for us. Nice looking
car, though. That's why I want to drive it to Seattle. That way
I get some small ROI for all the TLC before we sell it. And it
ought to save us a bit of money if we don't have to buy expensive
Washington fuel. (An extra gas tax.)

The new style vacuum pumps have been reported to be reliable for more =

than 200kmi. Because there is seldom ANY warning of vacuum pump failure, =

mechanics that have worked on engines that have failed from pump failure =

usually suggest changing pumps at least every 200kmi. The pump used on =

the OM606 is the same design as was used on earlier OM60x engines =

although there have been several revisions (each intended to increase =

reliability) since that style was introduced in model year 1984.

When a 7.20607 series pump fails, the loose parts usually drops down =

into the chain vault and then into the sump. Occasionally they catch in =

the chain and this can destroy the engine. If the cam surface of the =

timer assembly is damaged, the entire timer must be replaced. Rarely the =

front shaft of the injection pump is damaged. If this occurs, the =

injection pump must be replaced. Following pump failure, the pump should =

be inspected and if there is indication of disintegration, all pump =

pieces should be removed from the sump. I know of several engines that =

have failed when pieces of a failed vacuum pump were ingested by and =

jammed the oil pump. The engine was destroyed in each of those cases.

I've attached the Pierburg installation instructions.

This is a known problem with the IP. The dampner is inadequate, and the spring
on the other end of
the fuel rack gets weak with age, allowing the rack to vibrate fore and aft in
sympathy with the
longitudial vibration of the engine (only affects the 5 cylinder, by the way).
I believe the internal
design of the non-turbo IP is a bit different, so the effect is much less.

The cure is to adjust the dampner screw in slightly to reduce or eliminate the
vibration, but you
cannot overadjust, else it won't start cold! Also, eventually the vibration
will get so bad it cannot
be adjusted out. The real fix, an upgraged spring, requires complete
disassembly of the IP to replace
it, so I'd wait until something else needs fixed, too expensive.

Mine blew the head gasket at 181k miles. While I was inside I also replaced
the bent #1 connecting rod. Wonderful cars - until they break. Later heads
have a redesigned oil passage in front of the #1 cylinder. I don't hear
people complaining about cracked heads on these.

The one on eBay looks to have the original motor and green antifreeze in it.
That's not good.

The technical term we use to describe these vehicles are "rod benders", John.
Heads were bullet proof .It's the egg shaped cylinders due to weak
rods is what caused most of the 350 diesel engines to become boat
anchors.

You need to find one with a new MB crate engine and not just rebuilt.

John:

My GUESS is that the insurance co would only be interested in the fraud as
an supporting element of their case, and not as a standalone issue. Might
be worth some digging, as it sounds like you've got a clear case for fraud,
with independent data that someone else has collected for you and that you
might be able to use. I'm not a lawyer, but triple damages and then
possibly punative on top of that might be meaningful.

Glad that nobody was hurt. Freakin' weasels at that dealer (not that most
are any different).

Same here - 292kmi on a #14 head. IIRC, Marshall was saying around 20%
of the 603 heads were cracking, and I'm guessing that most of them
have already done it if they're going to.
The 603 engine in the 126 chassis is awesome!!! That 6 inches sure
seems like more. Rear seat passengers really appreciate it.

I am seeing this "never admit guilt" in more and more businesses. My
question is, how do people and businesses learn to do better if they are
never wrong? I don't think I could work in a business that requires such

John,
The loose lugs could be attributed to simple negligence, bad work habits,
being distracted and what else. But the used rim - I call that fraud.

Considering what could have happened they ought to buy your sister off
with the deal of a lifetime on a new car (which she could have serviced
elsewhere).

But then one of the things my wife came to hate after being in real estate
for many years was the "never admit guilt" directive.

Subject: [MBZ] Wheel Fell off Sister's Car at 60mph

My younger sister has a 2000 Volvo which she brought in for service at
the

Volvo dealership. They told her she needed a new rim, so she said "okay"
and paid up the $400 to put it on and balance (existing tire)

They let her leave. Down the road she hears a dragging sound and brings
the

car back. She brings it in and they said "oh, we forgot to put your sway
bar on" DUH

But the story gets better. They put the sway bar on and she went on the
highway. The car did a nose dive and she went off the road. She watched
her wheel roll down the highway lane.

State cops come, tow the car back to the Volvo dealership (not too
bright)
and they say "You must have had an accident, it wasn't the wheel's
fault."

So the insurance company says they'll pay for the wheel and they will sue
the dealership (so my sister doesn't have to.) THEY hire an investigator
who notices that not only were the lug nuts not tightened but IT WAS A
USED,
DEFECTIVE WHEEL. Now remember, she had paid $400 for a "New Volvo
Wheel."

So for those of you that remember my transmission overfill story from
last

year- combine that with this and MAKE SURE you check EVERYTHING before
leaving any dealership!!

I think the service managers are pushing the mechanics so hard to do 3x
the

normal work in the same time- the result is, of course, human error. It
could have been a costly accident.

[MBZ] Rough Idle

2006-03-19 Thread Scott Ritchey
Does anyone know (or have a theory) why the 917 turbo tends to idle rough
(especially when hot) but the 917 normally aspirated engine does not? Is
this common or is it just my two cars? =

The injectors are the same although the pop setting is higher for the turbo.
The IPs look similar but the turbo IP has the damper and the ALDA. So why
does the turbo tend to idle rough?

Check for proper valve clearance, then wash the engine real good and
look for fresh oil on the outside. The oil on the pressure side of
the turbo may well be coming from the crankcase breather or the turbo
itself.
There is a baffle inside the valve cover that could have a gap that
needs to be epoxied that can cause an excessive amount of oil to be
picked up by the intake air. I would run a warm compression test
again too and compare with your previous results.
Any oil spots on the rear bumper or trunk area?
