Fan clutch could be cause. When the engine is warm, like when you get home,
park car for 3-4 minutes then go spin fan. If it spins easy the fan clutch
is bad.
Personally as a matter of cost/benefit I would check fan clutch and replace
thermostat. Thermostats are much cheaper than a head gasket.

About three years ago, the exhaust system on my 1985 300TD started to
vibrate at a frantic rate at idle. This is especially evident at the very
rear where the pipe is pretty much a blur at idle. The pipe has fractured
twice now, each time in front of one of the mufflers.
So what's causing this?

My '82 300sd has been doing something strange since last week.
It runs around 100 or just under in the daytime, even on the hot days and in
stop and go traffic. It heats up at higher speeds.

(none of my '78's had 'em. Any way I can get it to run better and breathe

What is the story on "coking" if WVO is used? Some people seem to use it
with no problem, and others say processed WVO must be used.

The point of the BB is so that the disablement is not visible. What
also works is to substitute a cut-off framing nail for a short section
of Tecalan piping.
Where do I look for this evaporator?
As deep as you can get under the dash. As in: remove dashboard and
keep on going 'til you liberate something with a lot of fins on it
that ain't full of liquid.

Its possible the oil was just overfilled. Im sure the head will be
coming off.
