Fan clutch could be cause. When the engine is warm, like when you get home, park car for 3-4 minutes then go spin fan. If it spins easy the fan clutch is bad. Personally as a matter of cost/benefit I would check fan clutch and replace thermostat. Thermostats are much cheaper than a head gasket.

From what I gather, I would say that it is quite likely it does happen, it just takes quite a while before you notice it (15-20K miles on Mercedes?). But that's generally only a problem with unheated oil. Blending may or may not be an issue, but it's still WAY better than just tossing straight o

disable the EGR but instead of using a BB - which I thought would be difficult to get out if I wanted to change back I used a golf tee... The point of the BB is so that the disablement is not visible. What also works is to substitute a cut-off framing nail for a short section of Tecalan piping.
