The approach I would take would be: - block both front wheels and one rear wheel, front and back, - jack up the other rear wheel so it is clear of the ground and put that corner of the car on a sturdy stand, - shake the car to make sure it will remain up in the air, - crawl under the car and disconnect the linkages from the transmission shift levers, - turn the driveshaft a little with one hand and position each of the shift levers in its middle position, this will allow the driveshaft to rotate freely and establish where neutral is, - have someone carefully sit in the car, move the gearshift lever to the left to engage the 1-2 linkage and then slowly move it front and back while you watch the movement of the shift linkage - the movement should be centered around the position of the transmission's 1-2 shift lever. If not, you have a idea the direction the shift lever needs to be moved. - Repeat this with the person moving the inside gearshift lever to the right for the 3-4 linkage, - Conclude with the reverse linkage and correct transmission levers as necessary. I've been toying with the idea of using biodiesel as a weed killer. Haven't tried it yet, but I don't see why it won't work. Goat first choice (you might be able to borrow one for a little while), or buy one then you can take it to Wonko's grillfest (cabrito!) in the back of your diesel Benz once it has done its work. #2 is Roundup per below (watch the drift), but I don't think the Goracle would like that. --R Kevin wrote: > What works the best for me (keep kids and pets you care about away) is > the super ridiculous concentrate of roundup, in the 1 gallon jug. What works the best for me (keep kids and pets you care about away) is the super ridiculous concentrate of roundup, in the 1 gallon jug. Basically liquid death. Anything else makes it a little hard to plant there afterwards if you change your mind in a year or so. What works even better though is a goat. [MBZ] Anybody watch Mythbusters? Just tested WVO in SD
I have gotten to really like this show on Discovery channel. Now that this channel is included in my "limited basic" cable package. They just were testing fuel mileage myths. They tested several wacky contraptions they found - mostly on the net - that were supposed to improve MPG. I think only one worked and improved 6%. But later they tested the "myth" that a diesel can run on discarded cooking oil. They used an SD. They just filtered it (wish they told us how) and ran it out of a translucent plastic jug they mounted up by the windshield. They were quite surprised that with no car modifications it could run the car. It got 30 mpg at a steady 35 mph - compared to 33 mpg with dino. Also, it's amazing to me that sometimes automotive knowledge can be so separate from other engineering knowledge. These are two very knowledgeable guys in lots of different areas of engineering, but neither of them could find the fuel line on a couple of different cars. Cold compression reading are usually lower and more variable when the engine is hot. 50 psi difference could be within the variability of the tool you are using. Are the cylinders all about the same? [MBZ] 1993 300e 2.8 wiring harness, 230 & "new" car(s)
Even though I've not yet seen nor experienced a wiring harness issue with the bio-degradeable harness, was this malady possible on our car? It's a 1993 300E 2.8. Anyone have any good luck in getting MBUSA to pay for it? (Seems the comments on mercedesshop.com is quite lengthy.) If you'll remember, as a result of the 300SDL being totalled, I've now got a 1977 230 (basic car, like a Euro taxi) in the common beige with brown MB-tex interior... no PW, sunroof, airbags, ABS or fuel injection. However, it does have the original Becker Europa radio (not stereo and not cassette). At 141k, it now has a new tuneup, new tires and exhaust system. Only rust seen is some surface rust under the hood. I've also put on a Right side outside mirror. Oil change this coming weekend. Fun car, for 86HP. :>) It will eventually be our daughter's car once I can get something for me. Anyone know what the timing and points gap are on this baby? Dunno what will be my car, but I was thinking of a Porsche 944 turbo from the late 80's or a 2005 C230 Kompressor sedan (mit 6-speed). Comments on my choices? I've got some time to ponder about that choice. Actually, the red hair guy was ... or at leas an aspiring actor way back. At one time they showed an old clip of him in one of the old Charmin toilet paper commercials, he was the young shop clerk working in Mr Whipple's store in the ' please don't squeeze the Charmin' commercial...with a lot more hair. That aside, they do an incredible job of trying to piece these things together, even if they aren't up to snuff for the purists in any given episode, and they're loads of fun to watch. ---Robert John Robbins wrote: > They also weren't actors in their > work before Mythbusters... > > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ > For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > > > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Electromagnetic fan clutch
Not a good idea to just measure voltage with a meter either. Sometimes there is sufficient contact to let the meter read correctly, but not enough to provide power to the unit. Sometimes things like a poor ground are all that is wrong. At the very least, use one of the test light doodads. If the light is bright, then there is likely a good circuit. If you are measuring the voltage on the pins without disconnecting the wire from the fan and IF the switch complete the circuit to ground (and I believe that is the case in the '85 190D), then there WILL be 12V on both pins except when the switch is closed. You engine should NOT overheat under moist conditions even on HOT days (as long as the AC isn't running) even with NO clutch and no fan action. The fan isn't designed to come on until the coolant temp reaches 100+ degrees. That won't happen at idle or at even medium loads (at highway speeds or when climbing mountains it might need the fan) even on very hot days. My cars never exceed about 95 degrees C in city driving - even stop and go with ambient temps in the 90+ deg. F. range so the fan NEVER engages (unless the AC is on - that increases the load and engine coolant temps). If it's overheating then there is SOMETHING other than the fan clutch that's wrong. Not sure what the original car in question was, but this was true of my 190D 2.2 for the brief time I owned it. The only time the clutch engaged was when I pulled off the interstate after doing ~80 with the A/C on. Immediately stopped and fueled up (gas station was about 300ft off the interstate). Once I started it back up everything had heat soaked and the fan engaged. It would get up to *almost* 100C in stop and go traffic though... Hard to tell with the quality of the pics, but looked like some overspray on the cross member in the engine bay, around the attached tags? I guess a lot of the asking price is based on low mileage which they can't really back up. I'm not so sure such an old car with so few miles, especially one that was laid up for 10 years is really the best car to buy. Then again, what do I know, I'm new to all this Benz stuff. :-) Ed 300E On 12/07/07, Allan Streib <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Maybe. it very well might only have 25Kmi on it. Whoever wins this is getting a jewel. I thought the brake pedal was really worn away (indicating higher mileage) but it's really just sunlight. Re: [MBZ] Anybody watch Mythbusters? Just tested WVO in SD
WOW, 100% vegoil without pre-heating? You're REALLY asking for trouble. I give you 10,000 miles at MAX before you have injection pump, injectors, pre-chamber, or ring problems. There are major engine problems running 100% vegoil when it's preheated to 150F or higher, let alone running it at ambient temps Once you start having these problems, Italian Tuneup's won't even help. The MB/Bosch injection system is pretty well bullet proof, but it cannot handle the missile you've launched. -- Luther KB5QHUAlma, Ark '87 300SDL (271,xxx mi) needs head '83 300SD (246,645 mi) SOLD! Re: [MBZ] OM617 conversion to generator
I have one of the Generac units in my shed for such an occasion. I have no plans to set up a switchover box - I just plan to run extension cords in through the windows and if necessary will disconnect things like the furnace from the house panel and feed from the generator. We don't have many power failures but if we ever do in a bad weather situation, at least I have the ability to keep some basic items running for a while. I stuck with gasoline on the assumption that I can drain it out of my vehicles as an emergency supply. At this time, I have 2 gas pickups, a gas SUV and a gas car and if they each have a half tank, I will have quite a bit of gas to run the generator. If it was a more common occurence to lose power, I would be looking at a Lister type diesel and a big generator but so far I have not had the need for it. However, they finally got their act together anc concentrated on the consumer side, where they have been very successful with the small home standby units. I have a good friend that's a Generac distributor who sells tons of these things. I knnow that the big box retailers like Home Despot do as well. They're very well designed and packaged, and if I wanted a small stationary home standby unit with a transfer switch ("switchover gear") I would probably go with one. As for LP as a fuel, the choices are no-brainers, mainly due to the storage issues. The only bad thing about gaseous fuels is the lower BTU content, but the manufacturers have taken that into consideration when sizing engines. Made it to the Macinac bridge in 5th gear, but needed 4th a couple of times in Michigan's upper penninsula. 29mpg for the Michigan part of the journey, I was not willing to go over 55mph with no trailer brakes, especially since one of the trailer tires had been replaced with an underrated tire. Several mountains in Canada were ascended in 3rd or 4th with heavy throttle, descended in 3rd with the ignition off. This was after had I wrecked it and put in a used radiator that cooled poorly, so it was an exercise in engine temperature management. Does hauling a Red, white and blue Polaris snowmibile with a Yamaha engine and straight pipes on the roof and trunk lid of a 4 door Plymouth Gran Fury(ex cop car) with mag wheels and a whip antenna top all that? Or maybe the time I hauled a Buick 455 with th400 automatic in the back of a 4 door Omni? It was so rear end heavy I couldn't get traction with the front wheels and had to be pushed onto the dirt to get enough traction to get it to move. Hauled it 15 miles or so home, down off Sugar Hill(the highest point in the county) to Watkins(the lowest point) and back up the hill to my place(almost as high). What a ride that was. Re: [MBZ] OT: Hauling calves in a Benz [was Re: Is this Curt and his new 190? Or is it Marshall?]
I can recommend NOT strapping (12) 20' lengths of 1" galvanized pipe to the roof rack of a Subaru Impreza. It might not seem like that much in talking, but it's a lot heavier than it looks (well over the 125lb limit of the rack) and 20' is quite a bit longer than the car. That was quite interesting as I recall pipe sticking out way out over the hood and a bit in front of the car and a good ways out back too. Just trying to drive smoothly down the highway for 20 or 30 miles while the pipe just kinda see-sawed up and down over the bumps. I still have a dent in the front cross bar from that bit of stupidity. (: Levi Not sure if the mulch in a 944 beats the old Christmas tree on the whale tale of a 911... Yeah but we are not talking about rebuilding a MB gearbox, just finding the fuel pipe. If you have a basic understanding of how a car gets it's fuel you should be able to work out which is the feed pipe and which is the return line. Anyway they seem like nice fellas, if they had the big ego thing happening they would have edited out the part about them standing there looking for a fuel line. - Original Message - From: "John Robbins" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2007 10:32 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Anybody watch Mythbusters? The ST heads are AWESOME! They can run for years without problem. Generally nothing more required than a set of brushes now and again and regular lubrication.
