Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2008-03-01 Thread Jim Cathey
I pulled the battery tray out of the derusting bucket and wire-brushed
it off. I had to use the Dremel for the crevices. All the rust came
off great, the chunks were gone and there was a nice coat of black
oxide in many places. I washed it (using washing soda) in the sink
and then blew it dry. I put it in the shop oven to finish drying, and
to warm up. I put the primer can in there too, and after a few
minutes I then primed the battery tray. That dried quickly, so I then
put on a coat of black. That took quite a bit longer to dry in the
oven, but after an hour or two I put on the second coat. I also
wire-brushed the tops of the studs in the car and greased them.

...In the evening I pulled the tray out of the oven. It was still a
bit tacky, but I was tired of waiting. I installed the tray, with a
bit of grease on the bearing surfaces of the nuts. I then painted the
two nut/stud sets that hold the tray down. (The third set is for the
battery clamp.) I put back the plastic electronics cover, reclaimed
the old battery from the generator, and put it back in the car. (I'm
not going to wear out the new battery on the initial crank-fest.) I
pulled the control plug off of the glow plug relay and stuck a bare
10ga solid wire loop between pins 1 and 2, the ignition and start
terminals in the plug. (Violet [start] and Black/Red [ignition], I'm
not sure which is which.) I got out my old manual cranking switch
(automotive tool bought at Sears quite some time ago) and clipped it
to the loop and to the fuse stud in the GP relay. I then pulled the
vacuum shutoff line off of the IP, and put the battery charger on. I
made sure the car was in neutral.

Crank! I hit the switch and let it crank a lot. A _lot_! I was
starting to despair when I noticed that #5 injector was wet. I let
the car rest (and the battery charge) for awhile, and hit it again.
After a bunch more cranking #4 got wet. The battery is definitely
exhibiting signs that it doesn't appreciate this treatment. At this
rate I'm may end up killing it entirely, which is no great loss except
then I have to buy another battery for the generator. (And at that
point I really should buy two, as it's a 24 V system.) I let it rest
(and charge) for 20 minutes while I brought this record up to date.

Another cranking session didn't last long before the battery started
to flag. However, just at the end #3 started to get wet, so it does
look like I'm on the right track. 20 minutes is not enough
recovery time, I'm going to have to wait more like an hour before the
next session.

...I gave it about 3 hours and went out for another cranking session
just before bed. I didn't take the battery down as far as before and
I got #2 wet, and #1 was just starting to show fuel. Tomorrow I shall
try starting it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Apple iTouch question?

2008-03-01 Thread David Bruckmann
Just buy an unlocked one (CA$749) from Bongo Wireless www.bongowireless.com (or
go to Pacific Mall in Markham) and use it with your Fido or Rogers account.

There are two important things to BEWARE of with this approach:

1. Unless you have an unlimited data package, you could be asking for TROUBLE
2. An unlocked iPhone is very sensitive to "updates" from Apple that render it
inoperable. You have to make sure that no update is applied without checking
whether it has been rendered safe through "adjustments" by the developer
community.

Just another example of Henifay's abrasive style. I don't think it was
personal, but I too would take exception to it.
As for the Brooklyn seller of the S500: I agree you should have corrected

In my continued pursuit of the perfect vehicle for my wife, I came
across this listing that incorrectly says that car has Stability
Control:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280204883837

I kicked him off a nice email pointing out the mistake, and all hell
broke loose. I ended up saying that I would be sending our emails to
eBay and the high bidder to which he replied that they were
"Confidential Communications" and if I sent them to anyone he would
sue me and take whatever other actions may be necessary - whatever
that means.

Don't I have some protection as a whistle blower or something? If I
know he intends to commit a crime (misrepresenting the vehicle) am I
not required to take action? Morally if not legally?

Okay Hendrik, so I vent to the list and feel better and thank you all
for having to listen to it, then I get this crappy email from you -
what's up?

You ain't my momma, and even she didn't talk to me like that.

Re: [MBZ] eBay seller threatens to sue me.

2008-03-01 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Usually there is a disclaimer that states to confirm listed features
with the seller, mistakes are made and how many times do you see a bog
stock MB with body kit advertised as an AMG product?
I wrote to a seller once to let him know that the 86 260E he was selling
was not an AMG and got a flippant "whatever" reply but the next time
around he listed it, he did change the wording to indicate that it was
an AMG lookalike.
End of the day it is up to the buyer to inform him/herself about what
they are buying.
What exactly are you hoping to gain out of this? All you are doing is
causing yourself grief over something that is not your problem.
Perhaps you should buy yourself a couple of project cars to keep you
away from ebay and all the sharks that infest that place.
If the seller got abusive with you then perhaps you should inform ebay
but if it was just a mind your own business type of reply then I would
follow that advice.

I got an iPhone. Feature length films compress down to about 1G each.
I use handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) to compress DVD's. It's Open

Re: [MBZ] eBay seller threatens to sue me.

2008-03-01 Thread ernest breakfield
ignore the big type and pretty pictures; always start with the fine
print. (the fact that there's so much of it in this ad is in itself a
warning flag,...) the same thing is said a couple of different ways, but
for example, this is pretty telling;
"The seller shall not be responsible for the correct description,
authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty in
connection therewith."
IOW, "i can't be held to anything i say." (that may be the only
thing the seller says that you *can* believe!)

(as always with eBay or any other used-car venue) Caveat Emptor, indeed!
this guy seems to be a crook (and right or wrong, knows it), but if
anyone falls or this, it's their own dang fault.

cheers!

Re: [MBZ] OT Apple iTouch question?

2008-03-01 Thread LWB250
E-mail is already on it, but instant messaging is not,
and there has been a real outpouring of negative
feedback to Cupertino over this omission. Again, with
the SDK coming out in a week, I am sure this will no
longer be an issue, since it's one of the major items
on the customer wish-list. For that matter, there is
a good possibility that one of the developers that is
on the SDK team may already have an IM application to
launch. Keep an eye on Apple's web site for more
details.

The differences in storage are due to one being hard
drive based (the 160G "classic" iPod) and the other
being flash based (iPod Touch.) Right now, SSD or
flash memory is still quite expensive, for example an
SSD 60G drive running around $1000 retail compared
with a similar sized hard drive being below $50.
Until the higher capacity flash memory prices come
down, it's unlikely you'll see anything much larger
than 32G.

Recent price drops in the flash memory market are what
drove the release of higher capacity iPhones and iPod
Touchs' at the same prices as the lower capacity
models. This is going to continue to happen as prices
fall.

Right now you can buy a 32G iPod Touch - unless you're
using a lot of video, you would have to have a pretty
big library to fill a 32G device. My library has
around 5,500 songs, and it's below 20G, I think.

Re: [MBZ] OT Apple iTouch question?

2008-03-01 Thread E M
Hi Dan,

Thanks for your help. I'm not a real computer whiz, but I have watched a
few vids on youtube showing how to jailbreak an iPhone, to get it to work
more like an iTouch, and other things. I really want it for IMing and mail,
so until it can do that, I'll hold off. Nothing knowing what makes up the
guts of an iTouch, I do wish they had more storage. Not sure why the classic
can have a 160 GB, and the iTouch only 32 GB?

Thanks again for your help Dan.

Yea, you and Tom are right. I guess in the long run it means more
people will be turned off by eBay and the cars we want will be cheaper
to buy.

Dave, in all honesty, you would be interfering with a sale as an
outsider and Ebay would bounce you off the program. Contacting bidders
is a Big No No as far as Ebay is concerned.

Your intentions are admirable but interference with a sale on Ebay is
similar to me busting into a sales office and telling the buyer that
the seller is a crook...I would be trespassing and he would call the
cops!

You should probably just let it go. I do what you do all the time with
just one email to try and correct a listing but then I let it go at
it. Sometimes I get a Thank You and sometimes I get nothing and then
sometines I also get a rude note back at which point in time I move

Re: [MBZ] OT: Our Political System

2008-03-01 Thread Scott Ritchey
Slavery was doomed for economic reasons (machines were cheaper) anyway. But
it is interesting to speculate how history would have played out if the
South successfully seceded. Would other states have left? Would they have
reunited later? How would WWI and WWII have played out? Etc.

Are there still reasonable people (emphasis) who believe the South should
won the war to continue the practice of slavery? If so, I would be amazed

2008-03-01 Thread Bill R
Thanks Craig, I'll check those out. I have whatever video card came in the
computer [Compaq Presario SR1417CL, found on the sale shelf at Sam's Club
about three years ago]. On the Hardware panel it says the video adapter is
a SiS 760. I'd be happy to upgrade if that is needed.

2008-03-01 Thread Jeff Zedic
Speaking of car prices, I came very close to buying a 2001 C220 CDI
wagon last year.

I like the burgundy exterior with the black interior, nice 5 speed,
reasonably comfortable and quietand only $4,000!

Mileage wasnt very high either but the car had some rust issues! I
couldn't believe it! Every wheel arch had some, the driver's side
(right) rear door had it, and around the tailgate too!

I passed on it.

I found that some MB's over there to be downright cheap! A neighbour
had a CL320 for sale in the bright red colour for $8500!

Howard,

You could always ditch that filthy petrol car and get a nice celan,
reliable diesel. Then just do what I do...go to Tesco and get the 15
litre can of cheap cooking oil. Mix it 50/50, 70/30..whatever you
want, and enjoy the savings!

Just don't forget to take the old cans back to the recycling station at Tesco.

That filthy gasoline will be the end of this planet yet!!

And the fuel tax collections that fund all sorts of other things will
collapse. Just have to raise other taxes to support them, I'm sure
that'll be good for the economy.

I have friends who live near London and go to Scotland to visit family,
they complain about the 4 or 6 hour drive or whatever it is. That gets
you about 1/3 of the way across Texas, or up to Dallas from Houston. I
just laugh at them. It's all a matter of perspective.

Re: [MBZ] OT Apple iTouch question?

2008-03-01 Thread LWB250
Ed,

I have an 8G iPod Touch, and while the new application
pack that Apple added in January does allow for much
more flexibility than it had prior to the update, it
still does not have IM or chat capabilities.

That being said, you do have access to e-mail accounts
(POP, IMAP, etc.) and the Web. It even allows
streaming video from some applications, like Elgato's
EyeTV (which I have set up in my house.)

With the SDK for the iPhone/iPod Touch about to be
released, you can expect to see a lot more apps
available for both, and I am sure a chat client will
be one of them, as it has been a big point of
contention for users up to now.

If you were willing to jailbreak your iPod Touch,
there are already chat apps out there, but again, they
require a jailbroken iPod Touch. Not as big of a risk
as jailbreaking the iPhone, as you can't "brick" an
iPod Touch.

Hi Howard,

I'm curious, could you tell me a little about the current market for 560s in
the UK? I'm sure they can be found with less miles than examples here, but
what are the average bodies like? Do ppl more likely to take them to
dealers or shops for work, or are many maintained by the owners themselves?
Is the market for big S class cars cheaper in the UK than prices you've seen
tossed round here on this side of the pond>

Thanks in advance for you help Howard.

I've also heard talk that Skype is working on something that will allow the
same cheap long distance rates over your wifi equipped cell phone when near

Very often the alternator failure is just worn brushes. Just replace the
regulator/brush assy and see if that helps. Before you do that look for
badly worn slip rings. If they are go for the rebuilt as the new brushes
won't last.

Re: [MBZ] Damage limits (was Re: Inertia reel seatbelts)

2008-03-01 Thread Loren Faeth
A friend of mine used to run a grain elevator. The law is (was?)
such that if an elevator buys grain, and some other entity had a
legal claim on the value of the grain (loan), the elevator, not the
grower, is responsible for satisfying that claim. So lets say Joe
takes out a producer loan, and grows a crop. Joe does not have a
combine, so John combines the crops and in exchange gets 1000 bu. of
grain. John sells his 1000 Bu at the elevator, and there is no claim
that shows up in the search, so John is paid. Joe doesn't pay all if
his loan, so the lender starts asking questions, and finds out that
John was paid in grain. The lender then asks the elevator to pay the
balance due, up to the value of the 1000 Bu John sold. Joe has no
liability if the elevator pays the lender. The elevator has done
nothing wrong but has to pay twice the market value of the grain.

Twisted system, aye?

My friend's comment was that there should be an open season on lawyers.

Kinda a long way around to say the USA has way too many lawyers, and
way too many ambulance chasers, like John Edwards.

Re: [MBZ] MB - UK Gas Prices

2008-03-01 Thread Gary Hurst
howie, um, no offense, but it's a different deal here. if you want to go
shopping in the "big city", you drive like 6 miles to bristol. a lot of the
colonists here have to drive 100 miles to get to the mall. you guys have
all kinds of mass transit and we have, outside of big cities, virtually
none. we drive real cars and you drive little 3 wheel toy cars. but you
don't even drive as you walk anytime it is less than 20 miles.

so i would say that using 100 gallons a month at 3 dollars a gallon is worse
than using 3 gallons a month at 8 dollars a gallon, no?

Just like a film camera, keeping a lens on the body at all times greatly

I don't have a digital SLR (yet) so I don't know what I'm talking
about, but don't most of them have a function to clean the CCD to
avoid this? Zaps it with ultrasonic waves or pixie dust or pyramid
power or something?

That one has been around for enough years that it needs some serious updating.
I used to use for talks/presentations maybe 7 or 8 years ago. Anyone seem more

How many would have blue eyes? Strange question perhaps but I read somewhere
not long ago that everyone on earth
who has blue eyes is related. It is apparently all from one oddball gene at one
point in time.

If we could shrink the Earth's population to a Village of precisely 100
people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, the Village
would look like something like the following :
There would be:

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
8 Africans

52 would be female
48 would be male

70 would be non-white
30 would be white

70 would be non-Christian
30 would be Christian

89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual

6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth, and all 6 would be
from the United States
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
1 would own a computer

Comment?

Re: [MBZ] MB - UK Gas Prices

2008-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond

Yeahbut you've got a public transportation system almost worth having and small
fuel efficient cars worth driving...

If I were to take public transport to work it'd be a 30 minute drive to the
train station, 1 1/2 hours to Boston and then 1 hour BACK out west to my
office...

A fair a mount of comment on the List re: the price of gas

A gentle reminder that the price here is around 3.93 UK pounds per US
 gallon .

I'll leave you to do the currency conversion

Considering the fact that a form of slavery continued well into the 20th
century under the label "share cropping", I suspect that slavery would
have continued.

Not sure where I heard it but I was always told the War of Northern
Aggression
was about States rights. Read the constitution as it regards states
rights
and you
will see how much the federal govt has oversteped the Constitution *BIG*

time.

Not sure how things woud be now if the south had won - but IMO things
would
have been
*very* different. I hope both N & S would have banded together to fight
the
Nazi's. Without
a *United* states the germans would have taken much more time to defeat.

All IMO of course.

If I did, I would buy the tickets to fly us to Cinci and drive it home to
