A lot of times a manufacturer will provide content to best showcase their
product. Years upon years ago, in a galaxy that was pretty much the same as
this one I used to work for Radio Shack. We had started selling these
surround sound systems, and each store received an assortment of discs with
songs and sound effects designed to show off those specific systems. They
were professionally pressed, and had artwork covers, etc. Ergo, not CD-R
burns with Sharpie labels.

You would never find these discs in any retailer. They were made by the
manufacturer specifically for their retail chain. It a better than normal
possibility that what you saw was very much the same. High Def DVD's
designed and pressed by the factory to sell their product. Which means
you'll probably never find one for sell.

However *if* the chain sells based on commission, and you happen to be
in the market for a new TV anyway, you might find out if they can
accidentally leave it in the player you are buying for that $1500+
purchase that is going on his spiff ticket. I can't tell you how many times
I had to reorder from the main office because I had lost one of those
surround discs.

[MBZ] Another use for Diesel fuel

2008-03-27 Thread wilton strickland
Sometime in 1967, while I was on alert with B-52’s at Robins AFB, GA, our
alert facility manager, a strict and up-tight officer whom we called, “Major
Daddy,” suddenly decided that we aircrewmen should wash, wax and polish our
vehicles (four-door, crew-cab pickups), so that he could try to impress a
general visiting from higher headquarters. Amongst the five officers on
each crew, there were grumblings, such as, “If an officer prisoner of war
(POW) can’t be required to do manual labor, how can we be required to wash,
wax and polish these vehicles?” We officers were somewhat angry.

We had finally decided that we would do it, though, and were prepared to
start the task as we returned to our parking space outside the alert
facility early one morning after performing the daily inspection of the
aircraft. As we backed into our parking space, we noticed a sergeant (a
gunner on another B-52 crew) wiping lightly with a rag on the bright and
shiny truck beside us. Only 20 minutes earlier, when we had left the
parking space to go out to the aircraft, that truck had been as drab dark
blue as ours and all the rest of them. We jumped out of our vehicle and
asked the sergeant, “What have you done? How did you do that?” He replied,
“Bucket of water with a little Diesel fuel in it - just dip the rag in the
bucket and wipe the vehicle down with it.” In about 10 minutes, all of the
alert vehicles were glistening in the sun with their new coats of Diesel
fuel - ‘worked well for several weeks, too, and didn’t look oily, etc. They
really looked like they had been waxed. We never said any more about it,
and we never heard any more about waxing vehicles.

By the way, this is in no way an endorsement for using Diesel fuel as a
substitute for a proper wax job, nor is it an endorsement for dishonesty
and/or deception - if anybody had asked us how we had “waxed” the vehicles
so fast, our answer, of course, would have been, “We wiped them down with a
thin coat of Diesel fuel”. This is merely an example of innovative
compromise by a group of defiant B-52 aircrewmen 41 years ago.

Farmers used to spray the tractors, the idea being that the waxy residue was
a rust inhibitor. My ex-brother in law once got an oil ring on the fender
of his chalky old car (when teenagers married in the 70's, they couldn't
afford luxuries like nice cars) from putting a wet oil can on it, and decided
the oil ring didn't look chalky. Gave the entire car a rubdown with the
drain oil and it did look much better, at least for a while. OTOH, if you
get any used diesel oil on an old chalky white Benz, it looks horrible.
My 300SD has sooty oil fingerprints on the left fender and I don't know
how I'll get rid of them.

When I worked at Domino's Pizza years ago, they used some kind of thin
oil-based clean/shine fluid to keep their delivery cars shiny. It
worked really well but I can't remember the name of it. Probably a ZEP
product since that's who supplied all the cleaning supplies.

I'd think Diesel would be rather smelly for this purpose, though.
Also I wonder what effect it would have on the paint, long-term.

When I worked at a small dealership for Toyota (a real novelty in the late
60s), Volvo, Triumph and Jaguar used to spray te engine compartment and
under-carriage with a mix of diesel fuel and WD 40. The results were
spectaclar - all rubber parts glistened and all parts needing lubrication
rec'd it. Can't recall how long it lasted, but it really looked good for
the time the cars were on the lot.

Farmers used to spray the tractors, the idea being that the waxy residue was
a rust inhibitor. My ex-brother in law once got an oil ring on the fender
of his chalky old car (when teenagers married in the 70's, they couldn't
afford luxuries like nice cars) from putting a wet oil can on it, and
decided
the oil ring didn't look chalky. Gave the entire car a rubdown with the
drain oil and it did look much better, at least for a while. OTOH, if you
get any used diesel oil on an old chalky white Benz, it looks horrible.
My 300SD has sooty oil fingerprints on the left fender and I don't know
how I'll get rid of them.

wilton strickland wrote:

Sometime in 1967, while I was on alert with B-52's at Robins AFB, GA, our
alert facility manager, a strict and up-tight officer whom we called,
 Major
Daddy, suddenly decided that we aircrewmen should wash, wax and polish
 our
vehicles (four-door, crew-cab pickups), so that he could try to impress a
general visiting from higher headquarters. Amongst the five officers on
each crew, there were grumblings, such as, If an officer prisoner of war
(POW) can't be required to do manual labor, how can we be required to
 wash,
wax and polish these vehicles? We officers were somewhat angry.

We jumped out of our vehicle and
asked the sergeant, What have you done? How did you do that? He
 replied,
Bucket of water with a little Diesel fuel in it - just dip the rag in the
bucket and wipe the vehicle down with it. In about 10 minutes, all of
 the
alert vehicles were glistening in the sun with their new coats of Diesel
fuel - 'worked well for several weeks, too, and didn't look oily, etc.
 They
really looked like they had been waxed. We never said any more about it,
and we never heard any more about waxing vehicles.

By the way, this is in no way an endorsement for using Diesel fuel as a
substitute for a proper wax job, nor is it an endorsement for dishonesty
and/or deception - if anybody had asked us how we had waxed the vehicles
so fast, our answer, of course, would have been, We wiped them down with
 a
thin coat of Diesel fuel. This is merely an example of innovative
compromise by a group of defiant B-52 aircrewmen 41 years ago.

There probably is, but why? Half the charm of the car is the V12. With the
cost of diesel these days, it's often as cheap to run a V8 gasser now as a
diesel, as attested to by a few here. I think the V12 is about 30% worse on
gas than a V8 in real world driving. 400HP never comes cheap. An amazing
car, but if you're after great mileage, best to pass on anything that weighs
the same as a one bedroom condo.

Might work, I think the HP on a Lister is similar to that on the 240D and the
weight of the engine is about the
same. With that big flywheel, once you got it reved up, it would have momentum.

I can't recall, do the Listers have removable panels on both sides of the block
or just on the one side? If both
sides, you could swap the panels for some polycarbonate windows so that you
could look through the motor instead of
around it.

I think you should just go for it and post some photos.

Sometime in 1967, while I was on alert with B-52?s at Robins AFB, GA,
 our
alert facility manager, a strict and up-tight officer whom we called,
 ?Major
Daddy,? suddenly decided that we aircrewmen should wash, wax and polish
 our
vehicles (four-door, crew-cab pickups), so that he could try to impress
 a
general visiting from higher headquarters. Amongst the five officers
 on
each crew, there were grumblings, such as, ?If an officer prisoner of
 war
(POW) can?t be required to do manual labor, how can we be required to
 wash,
wax and polish these vehicles?? We officers were somewhat angry.

We had finally decided that we would do it, though, and were prepared
 to
start the task as we returned to our parking space outside the alert
facility early one morning after performing the daily inspection of the
aircraft. As we backed into our parking space, we noticed a sergeant
 (a
gunner on another B-52 crew) wiping lightly with a rag on the bright
 and
shiny truck beside us. Only 20 minutes earlier, when we had left the
parking space to go out to the aircraft, that truck had been as drab
 dark
blue as ours and all the rest of them. We jumped out of our vehicle
 and
asked the sergeant, ?What have you done? How did you do that?? He
 replied,
?Bucket of water with a little Diesel fuel in it - just dip the rag in
 the
bucket and wipe the vehicle down with it.? In about 10 minutes, all of
 the
alert vehicles were glistening in the sun with their new coats of
 Diesel
fuel - ?worked well for several weeks, too, and didn?t look oily, etc.
  They
really looked like they had been waxed. We never said any more about
 it,
and we never heard any more about waxing vehicles.

By the way, this is in no way an endorsement for using Diesel fuel as a
substitute for a proper wax job, nor is it an endorsement for
 dishonesty
and/or deception - if anybody had asked us how we had ?waxed? the
 vehicles
so fast, our answer, of course, would have been, ?We wiped them down
 with a
thin coat of Diesel fuel?. This is merely an example of innovative
compromise by a group of defiant B-52 aircrewmen 41 years ago.

Re: [MBZ] OT: i bought a vespa

2008-03-27 Thread Zoltan Finks
Good point. There certainly is a large contingent of equal opportunity
idiots behind the wheel. And add in the factor of not wanting to get stuck
behind a large vehicle. I know that bus drivers deal with this all the time.
I'm more talking about the primal reaction most people have to a vehicle's
size or appearance. This would be in the more average driver who doesn't
actively have aggressive habits. As the vast majority of drivers cruise
mindlessly around the roadways, driving by feel as I call it - applying no
actual thought to the task of operating a motor vehicle, the larger or more
intimidating the vehicle in their sights is, the more careful they are with
it.

I think that with dress pants and shoes on, riding my little Harley
Sportster I got less respect than a big leather clad dude on a chopper. And
I know that when I drove my black '68 Dodge Coronet two door coupe (picture
Wesley Snipes' Black Charger in the movie Blade) I definitely got more
respect than when I would tool around in my 90 Dakota pickup truck with
topper. I think there was more primal fear of me in my wicked looking muscle
car than in my gone-fishing - old timer looking truck. I definitely saw a
difference.

If I didn't have a strong aversion to being a pretender, I would get a few
stickers to put on the back of my vehicles - you know, something like
Tapout, or Ruger or even a Marine's sticker. I'm confident it would have
an effect.

So back to the Vespa issue: I think that just as folks did not feel that I
deserved to take up an entire parking spot with my Sportster (multiple
people actually told me this), I think that people have a general feeling
that a scooter doesn't belong on the road. And I cringe at the sort of
ambiguity a scooter transmits. I mean, it's not a real motorcycle, so maybe
it ought to move over for big, important vehicles. Of course it's not true,
but again, we're driving by feel. The worst is when I see people on some
sort of scooter or moped and they actually do sort of hug the right side of
their lane or actually get over for cars as though they were on a bicycle.

I was told some years ago that one of the reasons cars
in the Nordic countries rarely rusted out despite the

You have to figure that it would be just like some
dirty Cosmoline on it, so it would probably work...

Re: [MBZ] Another use for Diesel fuel

2008-03-27 Thread Tom Hargrave
We used to the same with the rust bucket's we'd drive in Western NY State.

We would spray used oil up into the door panels the channels along the
sides just about every other closed in space with a garden sprayer once a
month in the winter.

But it was easy to do because the cars we drove in High School were already
pretty rotten, with plenty of pre-made access holes.

We also discovered that a stop sign was a perfect fit for the floor of a
1967 VW bug it did not rust near as fast as the original floor pan...

I was told some years ago that one of the reasons cars
in the Nordic countries rarely rusted out despite the
harsh winters and road salt was because they would
take their waste oil after an oil change and spray it
on the undercarriage of the car.

You have to figure that it would be just like some
dirty Cosmoline on it, so it would probably work...

I'm not at all sure that those countries actually use salt on their
roads. Judging from the lack of potholes (you don't even see patched
ones much) and generally excellent road conditions I've seen in places
like Denmark, I'd say they either build the roads a lot better or they
don't use salt on them in the winter.

I never liked riding my Honda Goldwing in the city. People would follow me in
their cars at about 10 feet off the
back fender. I try to leave a bit more room for a bike as I really don't want

guy on the bike if he has to stop fast. Run into the back of someone's car and
you may not make them happy but hit
the back of a bike and it is not likely to be a good day for the guy.

[MBZ] really clean 88 or 89 300CE

2008-03-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
The dude shows up at the house a little while ago in the super clean 88
or 89 300CE. It still had a 103 (thought all of them had the 104 in the
CE). Anyway, its very clean, got 135k or so. Says he wants to sell it.
He says he would probably take $3500 Im thinking maybe this is a good
deal. What do you all think? Might need to sell my 2.5 turbo or
something to raise some quick cash.

2008-03-27 Thread MG
The one I have isn't a turbo but I could be talked into selling it if
they want to go in that direction. If the bus they have is one that
originally had the 411 type engine in it then the Porsche 6 will fit in
very easily. Basically no modification. Unfortunately the body on mine
is not goo enough to do much with. Too much rust on it in my opinion.

The kid across the street had his BIL bring his old VW bus he drove in
high school and deposit it in the drive of their rental house. His
sister got pissed off of the thing sitting at her house so she told
hubby to bring it to him. It is painted in rattle-can camo, in
surprisingly good shape body-wise but it has not been run in a few
  years
and the interior got torn out for some resto project that has not yet
happened. Some of the neighbors think it is a bit of an eyesore, but
the kids are nice, bunch of college grads with good jobs who like to
hunt and fish weekends, one of them has a big ranch down south
somewhere. Anyway, it would be a good candidate for Porsche
  transplant,
if anyone has a spare turbo around

[MBZ] AIR FORCE TESTS SYNTHETIC FUEL IN SUPERSONIC FLIGHT

2008-03-27 Thread RELNGSON
The Air Force flew supersonic on synthetic fuel for the first time last week.
A B-1B Lancer burning a 50/50 blend of synthetic and petroleum fuel launched
from Dyess Air Force Base in Texas and flew the supersonic test above the
White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Air Force officials said their goal is
to
develop a clean-burning, domestically produced fuel by 2011 that can be used
by all aircraft in their fleet. Each time the price of oil goes up $10 per
barrel, it costs the Air Force an extra $600 million. Synthetic fuel costs
about
$30 to $50 less per barrel than its petroleum counterpart, for substantial
savings

[MBZ] Want my 83 300D?

2008-03-27 Thread Mnetzky1
I'm finally giving up my 1983 300D. 207K, 4 extra Blizzaks with plenty of
tread on MB wheels, 4 newerYokahamas, newer timing chain (197K), maroon with
beige interior, always M1 since I've owned it, a/c and heat good, trans races
a little going into 3rd, (which it's done for 40K), engine's great(uses very
little oil), compression is good and even, door buttons and trunk locks work
with key and vacuum system, all gauges and switches work(not tach), two
windows don't work(they did last fall), cruise doesn't work, tach just stopped
working recently, body shows rust, and interior looks worn.

My daughter bought it in 11/03 and gave it to me afterward. I've never done
a VIN search, but if you want to: WDBAB33A7DB023031.

We live in Evanston, IL, just North of Chicago. I have full confidence that
it can drive anywhere.

I have no idea what it's worth to you guys, but I'll give you the first
shot. Make me an offer.

Thanks.

Re: [MBZ] Another use for Diesel fuel

2008-03-27 Thread Jim Cathey
I was told some years ago that one of the reasons cars
in the Nordic countries rarely rusted out despite the
harsh winters and road salt was because they would
take their waste oil after an oil change and spray it
on the undercarriage of the car.

Doubt it. When I was in Sweden 20 years ago it was hard
to find any car on the roads older than about 10 years old.
They have draconian inspection laws, and a some kind of
tax-funded system that essentially gives you a new car
at that time. All the old ones get crushed. A bad place
to be a car collector, unless quite wealthy. (Also a bad
place to try to be quite wealthy.)

Of course, the 90+% income taxes to pay for that kind of
thing sent plenty of them to the States to work for a few
years. (Longer and their State-funded retirement is
compromised.) I enjoyed taking a batch of them out to
lunch in the 60 Falcon. Pre-restoration! You'da though
I was trying to kill them the way they acted. Was pretty
funny watching them pick bits of seat stuffing off their
clothes while griping about deathtraps...

I don't know if they use salt, it may be that they just
know how to drive on winter roads. I wish we did it that
way here.

Re: [MBZ] Detailing of a sort

2008-03-27 Thread Rich Thomas
When I bought my old Eldo, the guy selling it had a couple of Mexicans
detail it, which seemed to consist of a hosing followed by a spray
bottle full of Armor All, and that was just the engine bay. They left
all the taco wrappers and drivers license of the previous owner (who
couldn't pay to have the engine rebuilt), one Rene Esquibel, and a
couple of really (really) nasty rap CDs in the interior. A couple weeks
after I got it (a year after RE defaulted), he came to the seller
wanting it back (title already reverted over on mechanics lien) and
threatened to kill the seller and me but seemed to be just talk.
Discussion ensued between seller and defaulter, with defaulter realizing
that the76 yr old seller did not care if he lived another few days or
not, had a shotgun, knew how to use it, and would not hesitate to do so.
