What pressures are you measuring? If it just modulator pressure or are you
measuring working pressure as well? Looking at my '83 TDM for 722.X trannys
I see max modulator pressure of 4 bar (58 PSI) and max working pressures of
13.7 bar (200 PSI).

My Dad's '85 300D is doing the same sort of things. The charging light
would faintly glow at an idle. Changed out the brushes (they are 2-3
years old) with another set. That didn't change anything. *** Swapped
in a different alt, and the charge light didn't glow but voltages at the
battery

the glimmmering, off and on alt light is classic worn brush symptom.
I'd try putting in new brush/VR set for $20 or less. Even if the
slip rings are worn, it still may work a long time. I've only had
one, on the 81 240D where the alt was too far gone. (of cars from
81 and newer)

Why put a Japanese alternato
Have you checked out the vacuum pump? A torn diaphragm can allow oil into
the booster, destroying it. It would cause the symptoms as you describe.
The rebuild kit is cheap and not too difficult. A disposable fuel filter
added in the vacuum line will reveal oil in the system. Booster can be

work. I got the bearings for mine at a local electrical
rebuild shop, they also turned the slip rings. You can

Only my sorry butt! The car was a private consignment, not
a seizure or anything like that, so it was somebody trying to
off their junk in a feeding frenzy environment. The car had
many rust spots getting started, on the doors and the rear jack
points.
OK I took the alternator to AutoZone and had it tested. The guy thought
it was awfully noisy, but it did pass the electrical test.
Of course, since my alternator lamp is only on intermittently, that does
not really mean anything right? Only that it was working at that moment.

Well I changed the fluid and filter today, no change, still will not
upshift. When I pulled the pan, there was a little sliver of white
plastic in there, not sure what that was or where it came from. So I
guess I need to find me some guages to check the pressure on it.

Wire brush on the grinder and it cleaned up and spun all the way in by
hand with no effort and no lube.

Don't forget that the brushes unit is also the voltage regulator. I like to
check the voltage output with my multimeter at the battery while the engine
is running. If the voltage is about 14 volts then the
alternator/brushes/regulator should be ok.

All of my head bolts were at the minimum length or no more than 2mm
longer. The engine had 271kmi on it when I R&R'd the head.

You may remember that I suspected that my alternator was going out on my
300D.
A couple of weeks ago the alternator warning lamp came on, dim at first
then brighter. I continued to work, and when I drove the car at
lunchtime the lamp did not come on. On the way home that evening it
came on again

Yes, I did, Im hoping I have time to install them this weekend. I got 4
brand new douglas whatever tires from walmart. They seem pretty decent,
they are just regular car tires but I went up to 215's and that
increased the load rating of them to close to what the regular trailer

Replace the head bolts -- they very rarely stay short enough the
second time, and the result will be what I had -- a leaking head
gasket. If any are definitely too long, condemn the whole set.
They aren't anywhere near as expensive as doing the job again in a
couple years.

Use Hylomar on the replacement head gasket. Be careful when you turn
the engine by hand, the spring on the vacuum pump causes it to lurch
forward. Remove the pump if it's a problem.
You can do the head/head-gasket with the car in the engine. You'd have
to pull it to replace the connecting rods. It

Yeah, it was one of those things. One car after another dead in the
