Mitch, how do you add a filter into MB's a/c system?

They sell universal filters that go into the rubber hose, sometimes the parts
store can crimp the fittings, sometimes you need to go to a hydraulic shop.

For instance, here's one for the suction line on a Corolla running R12:

When I searched ACDelco.com for a W116, I came up empty.

Yes, I remember. But, I also know that I wish I had your 300D (formerly mine)
back. Of the 30-35 cars I have had, your car is the only one that I think, I
should have kept that car. The room I wanted was not related to the
driver's room (I too think I had plenty of room in a 124), it was the rear seat
room if I took passengers. 4 people in a 124 is pretty tight, especially if I
have my seat all the way back. But, I am over that. If somebody wants to ride
with me, they can figure out how to fit. That was one thing I really liked
about my 126 - TONS of room for any and all!

Ok Don wrote: That was the reason he gave his wife to sell it to me I

Actually, my wife learned a long time ago, that it is best if she is not
involved in all the car purchases. She genuinely doesn't care what I buy as
long as I don't mess with her car and I don't bore about the details or tell
her about all the possibilities. She says it stresses her out. She would just
like a nice car to drive without being on the constant hunt for the next car
(like I am). I think she came to this conclusion when I had 22 cars in 2 years
when we had only been married for about 2 years.

In fact, with the last car I bought (the Cadillac I presently drive), I didn't
even tell her I was selling my other car and buying the Cadillac. I just got a
ride to work in the morning and came home with the Cadillac. I didn't call her
and ask her what she thought, I didn't tell her the pros and cons and weigh out
the choices. I just came home with a car. After dinner that night, she looked
at me and said, How did you get home today? I told her that I bought a car.
She looked surprised and said, Oh? What is it? I told her it was an old man
Cadillac and didn't tell her anything else. She smiled walked over gave me a
big hug and genuinely said, Thank you. She was very happy that I just bought
it and didn't get her involved. (Now there is a caveat to this story. I only
pay cash for cars and only if there is money in my savings account that has
turned into the Don's car account). If I came home with a new car or spent WAY
too much, then she wouldn't be happy.

I think you can have the car looked at on your behalf if it's on ebay, can't
you? I'd never feel comfortable buying a car on ebay, or any other such
place. I'm not real fond of auctions either, even though you can see the
car before hand. No idea of service history or anything.

I guess you take a risk with both, which is ok, providing the final price is
one you're happy with, and reflects the risk of buying a car in such a way.

These cars aren't rare, there are tonnes of them kicking around. unless
it's something you really really need, why not just get one you can see,
touch and drive, before handing over money?

Re: [MBZ] OT 89 F-450 Diesel

2009-06-30 Thread Loren Faeth
You are right. When I enlarge the picture, i can see it says F Super
Duty. Dealer called it an F 450. the old F5/F500 was 1 1/5 ton,
now that you mention it. We had a F500 for a while that averaged
2000 miles to the engine. It was replaced with an international 1500
that averaged 250,000 miles to the engine. The third engine was a
392 4 barrel and it was a movin' truck with that engine!

At 05:56 PM 6/29/2009, you wrote:

Solid truck as long as it was taken care of, the indirect injected ones

neglected. It would not be a turbo unless someone added it. Five speed

In 89, there was no such thing as an F-450, which begs the questions what
you're looking at. If it's an F-350, you might actually get something
resembling mileage out of it. If it's heavier duty, it'll be an
F-Superduty, and will likely have something insane for gears in the
back - 4.5x or 4.88 would be possibilities. With 4.10s in one with a five
speed, you're not going much faster than 60-65 to keep the revs down, draw
your own conclusions with the lower gears.

yeah, I know, kleb can get a 07 Shovey duramax/allison for $500, but

Nice things about a F450 is that it scares off all the townies who
only buy pickups to one up the neighbor, and it won't be overloaded

[MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-06-30 Thread Donald Snook
I was thinking about this new cash for clunkers program that starts tomorrow
and was wondering whether it would smart to take advantage of it. I have a
very nice 1993 Cadillac Sedan Deville. As I understand the requirements of the
program

 1. Owner must have owned the car for at least one year
 2. Must trade it in on a NEW car
 3. it must be 1984-2001 model year
 4. It must get 18 mpg (combined) as calculated by EPA on their website
fueleconomy.gov
 5. To get the full $4500, the new car must get at least 10 mpg better.

My Cadillac qualifies (in a few months - I haven't had it a year). So, the
question I am wrestling with is this: Is it worth it?

I hate buying a brand new car. If it was my car (as opposed to my wife's), I
would not be able to sell it/trade it every 9-12 months. I would lose money
trying to sell a new car that quickly. HOWEVER, my car is certainly not worth
$4500 and not taking advantage of this is like lose a few thousand dollars. On
the other hand, if I bought a new car, those monthly car payments would eat up
the $4500 pretty quick. I don't really see any new car that is all that
exciting at least not in the price range I would interested in.Thoughts?

Running, licensed and insured in your name for 12 consecutive months.

Yes,
I remember.  But, I also know that I wish I had your 300D (formerly
mine) back.  Of the 30-35 cars I have had, your car is the only one
that I think, I should have kept that car.  The room I wanted was
not related to the driver's room (I too think I had plenty of room in a
124), it was the rear seat room if I took passengers.  4 people in a
124 is pretty tight, especially if I have my seat all the way back.
But, I am over that.  If somebody wants to ride with me, they can
figure out how to fit.  That was one thing I really liked about my 126
- TONS of room for any and all!

You gotta be so careful with eBay. I bought (well originally bought anyway)
both my current MBs on eBay. The 240D I got 5 miles from the little dealership
I got it from and the whole exhaust (both mufflers and all) fell out from under
the car. Two days later the AC compressor went up in smoke (literally). Still
that was 6 years ago and in the interim its been a good car.
The 190D I took the pickup to get, the guy said Oh you can drive it anywhere,
with 4 flat tires? Or the driveshaft balance just flopping around, or the bad
ball joints, and tie rod, and rear suspension links and and and. It took $1000
to put that car basically right, I never did get the AC to work but my indy
figures its just empty. At some point I'll replace the bad fan clutch and all
the o rings in the AC and charge it and we'll see.

I probably wouldn't buy another car on eBay unless it was a screaming deal.

I think you can have the car looked at on your behalf if it's on ebay, can't

[MBZ] OT: Kaleb's mower

2009-06-30 Thread Curt Raymond
Before I left for Burbank early this month I cut the grass, to do that I dumped
the last of my snowmobile can into the mower. Big mistake, apparently there was
significant water in that can as about halfway through the job the mower
started to miss.
When I got back from Burbank the mower (this is my 1964 Cub Cadet 70 btw) would
start and run but had no power and wouldn't idle down good. It ran better with
the choke on but still not good, just like Kaleb's right?

So last night I pulled the carb which turns out to be Kohler made just like the
motor. I scrubbed it and shot carb cleaner through the jets as best I could and
left it to soak overnight. This morning I put it back together and slapped it
on and everything was back to normal. I cut the hideously long wet grass with
no issues at all...

Sweet.

[MBZ] OT: Repowering a lawnmower

2009-06-30 Thread Curt Raymond
Anybody ever have a Snapper rear engine rider? I've got one that was my great
uncle's. Its a '65 with a '67 8hp Briggs that has zero compression and rebuild
kits are NLA. I figure to repower it with something modern but I'm having a
heckuva time finding something affordable. I've got a newer used Techumseh but
I'm already tired of screwing with it. My mower has been sitting for 2 years
now and I figure the best/fastest way to get it going is to spend some money on
new parts. This'll also buy some space in my garage.

I've been told not to go smaller than 8hp but my Dad claims he had one (not a
Snapper but similar) with a 5hp that was fine. The price of the motor about
doubles when you hit double digits and there are very few 8hp motors to be had.
Its too bad, I'd pay more if I could get a Honda over a Briggs or Techumseh but
I can't find one (unless I want a $500 10hp) plus I want only recoil start and
an engine mounted gas tank.

Ideas/sources? The best I've found so far is at Small Engine warehouse, an 8hp

1/8qt of oil which seems like a lot for such a small engine, most I've used
only hold like 3/4qt.

Re: [MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-06-30 Thread Rich Thomas
The minute you drive that car off the lot it is worth $4500 less, so
trading in your clunker isn't buying you much, other than a new car that
you have to pay higher taxes, insurance on. And payments, or loss of
your capital. Buying a new car really makes little sense when you can
find a decent used car for reasonable money, and are prepared to deal
with the maintenance issues that arise on an older car.

My wife asked last year when gas was high, should we sell the Suburban
(2000). It is bought, paid for, great condition, runs fine no troubles,
insurance and taxes are low. To recoup any gas savings by selling it
(low) and buying some other thing would take years if it ever happened.

But some people like a new car, and don't care much about the financial
aspects, I guess that is what keeps the car companies in business (or
the taxpayer, but that is another thread).

HOWEVER, my car is certainly not worth

the other hand, if I bought a new car, those monthly car payments would eat up
the $4500 pretty quick. I don't really see any new car that is all that
exciting at least not in the price range I would interested in.Thoughts?

The only thing I can go by on this car is what they are telling me in emails.
They said the a/c works and is cold. All the power accessories work and the
car runs. The auction ad says, it is a nice running car for a 1989. I emailed
and asked them what that meant. I also asked if it had any warning

Donald, It means that most 1989 vehicles have issues, and run rough. This
car doesn't, and it does not have any warning lights on. It has been well
maintained and well kept.

This could all be irrelevant since I don't know if they would take $1500 for it
and that is the most (or closest to) that I will spend for the car.

My biggest problem with new cars are the depreciation hit that occurs as
soon as you sign the contract. It goes from being a New car to a Used
car with literally a stroke of a pen. some cars are worse than others but
many lose as much as 20% - taxes are calculated on the New value instead of
the used value of course.

Let's see -- how about some relevant numbers -
a new Volvo C70 (2 door convertible) has a starting price of $39,800 -
naturally taxes and delivery cosys are extra.

once it's used, NADA says $28450 as a Clean trade in. I had to use the
2008 price as the NADA Guide didn't have the 2009 listed as used -

Anyway - it dropped roughly $11000 or 27.64% Yikes! in 1 year with 400
miles (entered when I completed the NADA form.)

That's a pretty significant Hit IMHO. BTW, I read today that The EPA
did not publicly release a March report that raised questions about the
validity of the agency's conclusions that carbon emissions were a cause of
global warming and a danger to human health--primary assumptions behind the
cap and trade bill

Interesting.

If 'universal health care' as

Curt,

A Buddy replaced the engine on a Snapper he picked up for free (Dead engine)
with one from Harbor Freight. He's on his second season on it. So far he's
had no problems with it.
It's a Chinee rip off of the Honda design.

He figures if he gets two or three mowing seasons out of it he's got his
moneys worth.

The mowing season around here (South Louisiana) runs from Mar. to Nov.
He cuts 2 1/2 acres every week to two depending on the rain we get.

I'm thinking front seal (remove tranny, remove torque converter, replace seal),
or, if you're incredibly lucky, the drain plug on the torque converter.

Yes.
1. If you are trying to get debt free, buying a car on credit is like
driving the wrong way up a one way street.
2. A new car loses about 50% of its value in the first two years in GOOD
economic times.
3. Do you really need a new car? Will it get you enough of a promotion to
pay for itself?

My opinion...
Get a spray can of new car smell air freshener at your FLAPS, hose down the
interior of the Caddy with it, and take your wife to really nice dinner with
1/3 of what ONE new car payment would be.

The dripping fluid? Sure, wait for it to drip out. The source?
That's harder then. Unless you _are_ incredibly lucky and it's
a loose torque converter drain, it's the front seal or the front
pump seal, both of which (naturally) require pulling the tranny.

Yes, I remember. But, I also know that I wish I had your 300D (formerly mine) back. Of the 30-35
cars I have had, your car is the only one that I think, I should have kept that car.
The room I wanted was not related to the driver's room (I too think I had plenty of
room in a 124), it was the rear seat room if I took passengers. 4 people in a 124 is pretty tight,
especially if I have my seat all the way back. But, I am over that. If somebody wants to ride
with me, they can figure out how to fit. That was one thing I really liked about my 126 - TONS of
room for any and all!

Re: [MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-06-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Sure, its worth it, you are borrowing money from yourself to get your
rebate for your clunker. You will also be sending a perfectly good car
to the crusher.

Donald Snook wrote:

[MBZ] NOS parts motherlode

2009-06-30 Thread Christopher McCann

SO, I'm friends with the owner of the local Indy shop. He just moved from one
part of KC to another, after 26 years in the same location. He asked me if I'd
like to help him sell his old stock. SURE!

So I started putting some stuff up on Ebay this weekend. If you're interested,
here is the auction number of one item: 200357443812
from there, you can click to see my other auctions.

There are THOUSANDS of parts to sell, so if you're looking for something, let
me know (part number is nice, but I'll try to find it for you if you don't
know). I'll let you know if I have the part. I am free to set the price, as
long as it's reasonable. The owner wants the parts OUT of the warehouse, so I
can pretty much beat any other price.

Some rare things in there (tail lights for 600 limo) to brand new 123 fenders.
Most stuff is genuine MB, but some is aftermarket.

Chris

Re: [MBZ] OT: Kaleb's mower

2009-06-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

my problem was a push rod let go.

Curt Raymond wrote:

Sweet.

generally need a valve job before 200k. attention should have been paid to the suspension
by now or there will be nothing left there

The only thing I can go by on this car is what they are telling me in emails.
They said the a/c works and is cold. All the power accessories work and the
car runs. The auction ad says, it is a nice running car for a 1989. I emailed
and asked them what that meant. I also asked if it had any warning
lights/check engine lights etc on. Here is the response.

Donald, It means that most 1989 vehicles have issues, and run rough. This car
doesn't, and it does not have any warning lights on. It has been well maintained and
well kept.

This could all be irrelevant since I don't know if they would take $1500 for it
and that is the most (or closest to) that I will spend for the car.
