I'm with Curt and Mao here. A for-profit insurance company is by
definition broken from the policyholder's point of view. Its first
responsibility is to its bondholders, its second to its shareholders,
then (a distant third) to policyholders. Profit comes from paying out
less in claims than comes in by premiums. Ipso facto, many claims
must be denied, but choosing which to deny on the claims' merits
requires significant overhead in the form of adjusters and support
personnel. Therefore the most efficient and most profitable way for
an insurance company to operate is to pay out claims on a simple basis
that does not require evaluating their merits, such as
first-come-first-served. Effective for the shareholders, but
manifestly unfair for the policyholders.

[MBZ] Matt Cama family flooded out

2009-09-22 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Just read this post on the MBCA Forum, donations are being solicited.

Very respectfully,

LCDR Max Dillon
'87 300TD 314k miles
Charleston SC

http://mbca.cartama.net/showthread.php?t=31651

Mathieu Cama has devoted a lot of time and effort to MBCA and to the
Peachtree chapter. Over the last few months, his tech sessions at his
business, Old World Automotive have shown strong member interest and
participation. His enthusiasm for the marque has been evident to all who
have met him, his expertise obvious to those who have been mentored by
him for concours judging.

Mathieu and Jennifer lost their house last Sunday night due to the
severe flooding here in Georgia. To hear him describe the ordeal, they
were lucky to escape with their lives as this occurred in the early
morning hours. They also lost three cars including Mathieu's pagoda.

While they are insured (including flood insurance), there are some
things that insurance will not replace.

Many of you have known Mathieu over the years based on his numerous
contributions to this forum. I first met Mathieu in June of this year.
New Peachtree member Kurt Schindler had proposed a tech session using
Mathieu's shop Old World Automotive. I checked out his website and found
that he had a Mercedes car transporter for sale. I went over to meet him
and ultimately bought the car transporter. More importantly, we talked
about the Peachtree chapter and he expressed his willingness to sponsor
and promote monthly tech sessions.

I didn't know it at the time, but Mathieu had also been very active in
the MBCA on-line forums. The article in the current issue of the Star
Buyer's Guide: The 107 Panzerwagen, was mistakenly credited to Pierre
Hendry but actually written by Mathieu as pointed out in the Star
on-line forum.

The Peachtree Chapter of MBCA has established the Cama Flood Relief
Fund. We are solicting all MBCA members for contributions. Please send
your contribution to our treasurer Dan Marlowe, 1310 Cronic Town Road,
Auburn, GA. 30011. Checks should be made out to Peachtree Chapter MBCA
and earmarked for the Cama Flood Relief Fund. Your generous contribution
will be most appreciated. My wife Ruth and I will start with a
contribution of $50.

Regards,

Hm. Pretty crappy choice of photos even if he was in a rush.

What about this car? I've always wanted an SDL but don't want to mess with

Gee, I thought they all looked pretty nice. A good representation of an era now
gone. I can't say I particularly
want any of them but I do enjoy looking at things like this at car shows. I
never cease to be amazed at the effort
that some folks put into these old cars.

I would much rather see something like this than some of the later muscle cars.
I don't care if I ever see another
big block Camaro. They have become a dime a dozen.

Re: [MBZ] Car collection

2009-09-22 Thread E M
I enjoying going to show or cruises and looking at all the cars. I wouldn't
want to own them all, but there are few cars I wouldn't accept a ride in.
I'm not a big fan of the 50s, but they represented the time well, as do all

[MBZ] OT continental kits

2009-09-22 Thread R A Bennell
There is a blue Ford Galaxy convertible that shows up at most of the old car
gatherings around here, with a
contintal kit that is quite nicely done up. It has air brushed art on the spare
tire cover that looks like the
solar system or such, and says Cruisin in my Galaxy A bit corny perhaps but
nicely done. The car would be early
60's with the big round single tail lights and is a very nice deep blue.

Ipso facto, many claims
must be denied, but choosing which to deny on the claims' merits
requires significant overhead in the form of adjusters and support
 personnel.

And how will your non-profit insurance company identify the flood of
fraudulent claims that will pour in with its we pay all claims, no
 questions asked mode of operation?

I don't imagine that a nonprofit insurance company could do without
adjusters entirely and pay all claims without argument---human nature
being what it is, that way leads pretty inevitably to the Tragedy of
the Commons. But, as Curt says, if the money now earmarked for
shareholder profit were instead spent on evaluating claims (rather
than the current system where, as I said, there is a disincentive for
the company to evaluate claims fairly and an incentive to pay them
arbitrarily as long as they do not total more than premium income plus
overhead), the proposed nonprofit could operate in a way that was much
more fair and helpful to its policyholders---i.e., more valid claims
would get paid, and fewer invalid ones.

I'm thinking of car insurance here, where there are no nonprofits, as
far as I know. As someone pointed out, there are lots of nonprofit
health insurance providers, but health insurance, of course, is a lot
more complicated.

lines are new and dry. The leak is at the junction, no fluid above

If the heat shields need to come out every time the injectors come

Will I need to redo the calibration for pop?

You really should replace the heat shields. They also seal the
injector to the pre-chamber, and if they leak, you get low

If the bodies are leaking, make SURE there is no lint or anything on
the sealing surfaces before you torque them down again. Even a
trace of shop cloth lint will make them leak, and that also means
they open late from low pressure, and it will knock like crazy.

Verify that it's the actual injector leaking, and not the overflow
lines, too.

Mike,

Checked the online EPC for your car (123.133) and that part (N 915013
013002 is the format that EPC looks for) is used at the oil filter end
of the oil cooler line. It is number 146 in the attached picture.

You could remove it from your oil filter assembly to see if it will do
the trick and order/scrounge as you see fit.

It look pretty good. Save it, don't let it go to parts!

Re: [MBZ] ticketable

2009-09-22 Thread LarryT
That's one (of many) problems I have with the way our president
characterizes those without insurance. He claims those without insurance
don't pay their bills - actually, there's a large part of the pop who don't
have insurance who do pay their bills when they need care. Thomas Sowell
wrote about having one of his children when he did not have insurance. It
was too much to pay in one lump so he paid installments - his comment to his
wife when the final payment was made was he's all ours now - we own him
free and clear. or something very close to that.

I remember as a child going to the doctor or dentist and my parents wrote a
check for the bill - or part of it. I suspect a lot of those people who
think they are healthy enough not to need insurance also pay their doctors
bills. and some even have the foresight to buy catastrophic insurance
should they be in the hospital for a week. So they are not technically
insured, they are not part of the problem. There's also a lot of people who
don't seem to get sick often.

Anyway - Loren is right - if everyone paid their way here wouldn't be a
problem.

Have a nice day -

Amen, and this discussion would NOT come up if everyone paid their own
bills, instead of expecting Nanny to do it for them. This country was
created by REAL MEN and WOMEN, not the bunch of whining wimps that inhabit
the country now.

If YOU expect ME to pay YOUR bills, then I have a RIGHT to say Pull the

Yes it is WRONG. But that is what happens when YOU expect ME to pay YOUR
bills because you got the Gummit to steal my money That is WRONG, and it

After 6 months there I couldn't do it anymore. I went on full disability

2009-09-22 Thread LarryT
You wrotefirst responsibility is to its bondholders, its second to its

Not necessarily, IMO. If the policyholders are treated poorly they will go
elsewhere, if enough are treated poorly - and in your example I assume *all*
would - pretty soon there wouldn't be many customers and the company would
not have many (any?) investors (stockholders) leaving the bondholders
holding the bag.

If *any* company wants to be of value to their shareholders (who are the
owners of the company) the company must be receptive to their customers.
IMO , it doesn't matter if they are for profit or not. Actually the case
could be made that a non-profit might treat customers worse.

Capitalism *will* work, if the government do-gooders can stay out of it.
The customer will drive the company toward excellence or they will go
elsewhere. Same with shareholders - people w
ho do their due diligence before buying stock will look at how customers are
treated - because that's the only product the company can provide service.
If a company has poor rating when dealing with the customer it will perform
poorly - and the stock will also.

I did have quite a hassle the last two years with Anthem Blue Cross

Since you have been preaching this sermon for MANY months now, how about

The concept of insco is based in fraud. Get plenty of people paying
premiums for miniscule events that rarely payout, payout a few, keep
the change. Read the hedlines - medicare is bankrupt in 7 years -
same scheme.

The issue that the prez has taken on has to do with prices, not care.
The care facilities and personnel and equipment here are the best per
capita in the world, or close - I would suspect. The issue is cost.
And, cost is driven by the ability to get payment - from a large pool
- insco. Think AIG - yeah, they did good, eh? Fraud in the headlines
- and you want someone to explain this to you? Read it, think about
it, don't try to defend it - and the concept falls into your lap. I
mean, if you rely on insco somehow - you defend it, and many persons
defend insco. I have no reason to think they will skrew me if I have
a large claim, but the concept is just wrong. There is not enough
premium money being gathered to cover the uneventual for each rate
payer, pure and simple. Meanwhile, the insco execs run around the
rich of the world - read AIG, again. etc.

Re: [MBZ] we pay, that's who pays

2009-09-22 Thread Mountain Man
Something is wrong with our indoctrinated concepts of insco and
payments. As --R mentions - they bet on no failure, you know better.
Then when failure comes, we are thankful for... failure? so they can
pay out? I mean, what did pa do out on the prairie 100 years ago when
failure happened? Yep, another hole in the ground. The concept of
insco being available for catastrophe for each of us is untenable.
Realize that you guys with these big payouts are literally lucky - and
we are paying your bills - literally. Sounds fine - no complaint from
me - but there still is something wrong with our outlook and
expectation regarding insco. I deteriorate daily but in no way expect
any payout from insco. In my entire life I have probably visited a
doctor for myself probably no more than 30 times total. I don't do
doctors and don't expect to do them ever. I am training my heart/mind
to just take what deterioration happens and live with it and then be
done. That is not a common mind, I realize, and I think it somewhat
expresses my complaint that our attitude about insco is wrong
somewhere. Hence, I detest insco, I advocate the annihilation of
insco. How? - dunno.

And if the plug doesn't want to come out, there's no harm in taking a
short length of line and making your own plug for it out of whatever
cylindrical diesel-resistant material is handy and fits tight---the
shank of a large nail, for instance. That's what I did when I
replaced my lines with Viton.

Re: [MBZ] Biobor

2009-09-22 Thread Scott Ritchey
Well, I see two biocides on the West site add I think they are both OK:
Biobor JF Microbicide and BioGuard Fuel Microbiocide. They are both $23 to
$25 a pint. The goal is to prevent the microbes from growing at the
fuel-water interface. As I recall, the live bugs live in the water but the
dead bugs get in the fuel and can goom up the injectors, etc. The fuel
looks dark in color when this happens.

My 82 300 SD gets little use these days so I keep a bottle of Biobor in
the trunk and add the specified amount at every fillup. It doesn't take
much so the bottle lasts a while. The plastic bottle has a gizmo that
lets you squeeze the required amount into a small chamber to pour in the
tank so it's pretty convenient. I generally get it from West Marine.

I went to West Marine's website and found Biobor JF Fuel Anti-fungal
listed on http://ecatalog.westmarine.com/full.asp?page=394 ($22.99/pint).
Is this the right stuff?

Marshall also said that one needed to disperse/get rid of water, but I
don't recall him mentioning a product for that task. The same page lists
ValvTect Marine Diesel Additive with BioGuard. Is this an appropriate
thing to use in addition/instead of the Biobor JF?

If *any* company wants to be of value to their shareholders (who are the

, it doesn't matter if they are for profit or not.   Actually the case could
be made that a non-profit might treat customers worse.

Capitalism *will* work, if the government do-gooders can stay out of it. The
customer will drive the company toward excellence or they will go elsewhere.

I'm a staunch defender of the free market, and perfectly happy to let
it decide who gets what good and services, and at what prices, most of
the time. It's a puzzle to me why a free-market approach to insurance
has produced such a broken system. It seems like insurance is one of
the few businesses, perhaps the only, where profit is made explicitly
by *not* providing the customer the service for which he has
contracted and paid. As you say, that should in theory put the
company out of business in the long term as word gets around that they
don't keep their word. But it doesn't seem to.
