Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension
why did you need a spring compressor to replace the strut? I do not recall having to use one on that job. As for the groan, yes, its probably a ball joint. It seems like it is always the RF. The RF on my 90 300D was groaning. I got under it to discover the ball joint has a grease fitting on that side. The left side does not. The boot was just fine, so I pumped some grease in and now its quiet. Dieselhead wrote: A few months ago I put new front struts in the 124 using Rusty's loaner spring compressor. By the way, that spring compressor works great. Too bad they are so expensive. Now I have creaking and groaning, particularly when turning, from the RF corner. I am assuming this is the ball joint. Is this most likely the ball joint? Do I have to get the spring compressor to change the ball joint on a 124? Any other special tools needed? I gotta say the easiest from end work I ever did was on a VW. Take off the big nut; Whack on the taper bolt with a BFH; mark the relation of the ball joint to the LCA, Remove two bolts from the LCA. To install the new one, INstall now Ball joint, line up with the match mark made earlier, tighten bolts; tighten the big nut. No need even for a front end alignment if you are careful. Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension
speaking of the HF kit, they have adapters in the kit,but they also sell the other additional kit with more adapters in it. Are any of the ones in that kit the proper size for removal/install, or does a person still have to find a piece of pipe the proper size? Peter Frederick wrote: Ball joint almost surely, although the upper strut mount can also groan like that. Easy to check, as by the time the ball joint starts making noise, the boot is gone (the reason they fail, actually). If you jack the tire free of the ground and pry up on the bottom, it will also clunk -- less than 1/16 movement is OK. Be aware that the rear links also squeak and groan as they fail. Replacing the ball joint is easy -- jack the car up and put a jack stand under the control arm, then lower the car onto the jack stand. If you think you need to do both, put a jack stand under the control arm on each side. Use the hole for the spring compressor, you want the weight of the car sitting on the control arm as you must remove the strut. Remove the strut, then remove the clamping screw that hold the steering knuckle to the ball joint. You will need to tap a cold chisel or fat screwdriver into the slot on the back side to get it to slip off, usually. I use a Harbor Freight Ball Joint tool with some bearing retainer rings stacked around the ball joint on top to push it down and out of the control arm. The adapters in the kit will work just fine to put a new one in. Make sure that the notches in the flange are lined up perpendicular to the centerline -- the joints are directional and will fail quickly if you don't. The originals on my W124 had one notch pointing to the centerline, the replacements have two. Not a bad job at all. If the struts are squeaking at the top, put a new bumper on them, and if the dust boots are not new, replace them too -- the struts will last longer without dirt piling up on the top seal! I have not jacked it up yet to see if there is any play. But, I am going to check it in the next couple of days. It does have a control rod set up - sort of. It has upper and lower control arms and thrust arms that incorporate the ball joints. It's a mystery to me. I am not very good with suspension stuff. Donald H. I had some scary warning lights coming on for a few days and thought the predictions of high cost repairs was in my future. It turned out to be low tire pressure on one tire. Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension
Thank you. I know this is the RF. One of the rear links is squeaking too. You refer to bearing retainer rings and Kaleb talks about a pipe. By bearing retainer rings do you mean the thin circular spring? I take it you are putting something on that fits the taper, or do you mean a pipe that does not contact the taper, but transmits the pressure to the top of the joint, below/beyond the taper? If a pipe works, it sounds more like a sleeve type bushing. I will jack it up to confirm the diagnosis. I was told I needed the spring compressor to change the struts. It worked, and there was no danger of the spring getting free to cause damage. I wondered if I could do it the old way, with a jack under the LCA. When I worked on the rear, I used the jack under the LCA to let the pressure off the spring after the outer end was loose. On 11/29/09 10:49 PM, Peter Frederick wrote: Ball joint almost surely, although the upper strut mount can also groan like that. If the struts are squeaking at the top, put a new bumper on them, and if the dust boots are not new, replace them too -- the struts will last longer without dirt piling up on the top seal! latest run of BMWs has seen the company soften the looks a bit. Seems a lot of journalists didn't care for either the 7 or 5 series looks. I'm not sure why companies pay so much attention to such things, I doubt many car reviewers park either a 5 or 7 Series in their garage. Both have been very popular around here, and sold well. I remember not that long ago, seems the journalist world were beating BMW up for their iDrive system, along with all their rivals, including Mercedes. Re: [MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD
since you're reporting that your speedo is reading too high based on your test, i'd say the root of your problem is not your tire size; larger tires than stock make the speedo indicate lower than reality, not high. speedos and odometers don't even always agree with each other, so before i got too far into trying to correct anything, i'd re-test without depending on one to check the other. i'd suggest finding a stretch of highway (the straighter the better) that's got clearly marked mile markers on the roadside. take an odometer reading at one, and see how it compares to other mile markers a mile or ten down the road. Speedos are allowed to read up to 10% high, but never low. my experience has been that Odos are typically closer to accurate. i'm not certain of this model, but isn't the speedo driven off of the transmission in these cars? if you find a major error in Odo readings based on a comparison to highway mileage markers, i'd be very suspicious of the speedo drive gear if that's in a replacement transmission. 1985 was a weird year for MBZ diesels; they allegedly had a different Injection pump causing them to make a little bit more power, and a different (higher) differential ratio to allow the engine to turn over slower at a given speed. (there was also the Calif vs Federal versions, but i don't think that affected anything in the driveline.) if your '85 transmission has different speedo gear ratio in the transmission than your '83 chassis speedometer 'expected', that might seem to explain the difference you're seeing, even though the oversize tires would actually be very slightly correcting for it. cheers! e andrew strasfogel wrote: The OEM tires were 195 X 70s vs. the 205X 70s I am currently driving on. Re: [MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD
hi Andrew! sorry, you might be on to something there, but i'm not sure of the best answer for this one; it would probably be wise to first confirm if the speedo is driven off of the tranny before drawing any conclusions and proposing any solution. (i'm sure this should be an easy question for many of the wizards on this list; i just don't dare make the assumption in this case.) *IF* the speedo is indeed driven off of the trans, the next question would be to figure out if it's easier to swap the speedo drive componentry with one of the proper ratio, or if it's more practical to swap something on the instrument panel end. (for example, i know in the case of my J**p or my BMW GS, it's relatively simple to swap speedo drive units of different ratios.) cheers! e andrew strasfogel wrote: Ernest, you read my mind. I drove at 60mph for exactly one mile in cruise control and checked my watch - a little more than a minute. I tried this for several miles to verify the error, and sure enough, the speedometer was reading too HIGH. Even at 66 mph I barely made a mile a minute. [MBZ] OT, how to get pics off digital camera
For work, I had a Nikon D40 I used, and when plugged into the computer, it would pop up a window asking what you wanted to do, one of which options would be to open folder to view pics. So now I bought myself this D3000 for work and when plugged in, it does not have that option at all, basically will only let you import the photos to your computer, not just open the folder to see which ones you want. Rather than being listed as a removable drive in my computer its listed under scanners and camera. Is there a setting somewhere on the computer to treat it as a removable drive, or somewhat to be able to just open folder, rather than only allowing to import photos? yeah, i've noticed this too with some cameras. i've just started importing them into iphoto and deleting the ones i don't want there. alternatively, you can just start using a card reader as well. you can get those now for a a buck or two on ebay delivered and the card reader and card just becomes a drive. it's not an answer to your issue, but just how i've dealt with this issue myself On Mon, Nov 30, 2009 at 3:17 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] OT, how to get pics off digital camera
I just got a D5000 and I notice sometimes that Windows Explorer (the file manager app, I think that is what it is called) won't recognize the files on the camera until I run the Nikon photo app, which won't recognize the camera or any pics on it (!!! go figure). Then if I refresh the WE view of the camera in file manager it shows the pics on the camera card and you can pick and move them, delete them, whatever. I have no idea why it does this, I think the two apps conflict with each other somehow. It didn't do that until I installed to Nikon app, which looks like about 30 other photo management apps, kinda lame. the window does pop up asking what you want to do though when I plug it in, and the cam shows up as a plugged-in device/drive on WE. Take a look on the cam menu and see if there is some setting to make it act like a hard drive when it is plugged in, I vaguely recall that somewhere on my cam menus. Aslo, are you turning the cam on after you plug it in? --R Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] OT, how to get pics off digital camera
I have look thru the menus and I do not see anything related to that. Yes, I am turning on the camera when plugged in. Rich Thomas wrote: I just got a D5000 and I notice sometimes that Windows Explorer (the file manager app, I think that is what it is called) won't recognize the files on the camera until I run the Nikon photo app, which won't recognize the camera or any pics on it (!!! The one that replaced it, the 600c is also out of production and I guess Lowrance is getting out of the auto gps business. Its quite a shame. Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension
We used some two part clamps used to locate a shaft running in pillow block bearings left over from the saw mill. You want something to press on the outer part of the ball joint to shove it out of the control arm, pressing on the movable part usually just drives it out the bottom. You need a compressor to change struts if you do not support the control arm with a jack stand (NOT a floor jack, they can, and do, leak down) with the car sitting on it. On a lift, you must use a compressor (and it's much safer, too). The rear spring is much shorter fully extended, a jack is fine to let it out. Re: [MBZ] I got me a bent rod
You will need a new sleeve, a new piston, and a new rod at a bare minimum. My brother has a perfect example of what you will get if you don't replace that sleeve (or sleeve that cylinder if it doesn't currently have one, some didn't for a while, I think). The combustion leakage down the gap will burn the rings and eat the cylinder wall. If you have the original rods, you need a whole set as the new ones are considerably heavier. You may have the option of oversized pistons, but they aren't cheap either. IIRC, he's been there, and #1 was the most worn and the most out of round, but it didn't seem terribly so. I'm not happy with the looks of that piston though. After about 6 months of minimal sleep, mainly because I would wake up at 3:30 and lay there worrying about what I had to do the next day, I saw my doctor. He put me on some really low dose anti-anxiety drug that I take at bedtime, which has helped immensely. I still wake up early and my mind starts racing, but at least I can get a good 6-7 hours of sleep a night now. I am pretty anti-prescription drugs, for that matter, I rarely take any OTC stuff, either, but I simply could not go on the way I was. I look forward to the day when my anxiety level drops to the point where I can sleep normally. I don't take it on the weekends, which means I don't always get a good night's sleep then, but I can sleep in if necessary, too.. so you really think I will need to sleeve it? If I have to replace the piston and sleeve it, thats going to add quite a bit to the total. I might have to start investigating that wierd 603 I have Peter Frederick wrote: You will need a new sleeve, a new piston, and a new rod at a bare minimum. Yea, I have an electronic bore guage but I dont think I am using it properly. I did measure everything before I pulled the engine out and posted the results I got, but I am not sure if I am reading it correctly or what I am even seeing. Here is that email with the results Ok, so I measured to bores today with my HF electronic bore gauge. Keep in mind I have never done this before, and not sure if I even did it right. Here is what I did. I set my HF digital caliper to the spec of the bore, approx 89.01. With it set there bore gauge gives a base reading of - .424mm. Below are the measuring points I took 1=bottom of cyl 2=middle of cyl 3=top of cyl a=longitudinal b=lateral This is what I got for measurements. On some of these, I took the same measurement SEVERAL times till I was able to somewhat repeat the results, all numbers are actually -(negative). Trying to figure out if any of this tells me if I have ovaled cylinders or not. Basically the spec is 89.007-89.012, so we will say that the base setting of -.424 is 89.01, then the numbers listed above, such as the first one -.418, that measurement would be about .006 more than the base measurement of 89.01, correct? Or is my math all wrong here. Given the numbers above, and the fact that I am no expert, does it seem like I might have a problem? R A Bennell wrote: Do you have any precision measuring tools?
