Yoinks! Very thorough...

Fortunately with our little house (900sq ft) and little generator (1200w peak)
and considering the fact that we don't NEED the generator (we got through the
ice storm last year just fine without) the power is a nice to have. Though
if/when we have another ice storm it'll be nice to cruise over to the inlaws
and heat their house up with that rather than burning (expensive) 1# cans of
propane...

Absolutely!

Here is the LaTeX document I made to print up for my wife, in

I'd think that SEL interior would work too, you'd just have to trim the carpet,
which you could probably do under the front seats where it wouldn't show.
If the new seats have features the old ones don't, like heat or power
adjustment, some wiring might be in order.

How about an adaptor/hose to connect a 20# propane bottle to your heater?
Surely you must have a propane distributor around that will do that.

Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension

2009-11-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
why did you need a spring compressor to replace the strut? I do not
recall having to use one on that job. As for the groan, yes, its
probably a ball joint. It seems like it is always the RF. The RF on my
90 300D was groaning. I got under it to discover the ball joint has a
grease fitting on that side. The left side does not. The boot was just
fine, so I pumped some grease in and now its quiet.

Dieselhead wrote:

great. Too bad they are so expensive. Now I have creaking and

assuming this is the ball joint.

Is this most likely the ball joint?
Do I have to get the spring compressor to change the ball joint on a 124?
Any other special tools needed?

I gotta say the easiest from end work I ever did was on a VW. Take
off the big nut; Whack on the taper bolt with a BFH; mark the relation
of the ball joint to the LCA, Remove two bolts from the LCA. To
install the new one, INstall now Ball joint, line up with the match
mark made earlier, tighten bolts; tighten the big nut.

No need even for a front end alignment if you are careful. That is
the one job I remember that took LESS time than I anticipated!

speaking of the HF kit, they have adapters in the kit,but they also sell
the other additional kit with more adapters in it. Are any of the ones
in that kit the proper size for removal/install, or does a person still
have to find a piece of pipe the proper size?

Peter Frederick wrote:
Ball joint almost surely, although the upper strut mount can also
groan like that.

Easy to check, as by the time the ball joint starts making noise, the
boot is gone (the reason they fail, actually). If you jack the tire
free of the ground and pry up on the bottom, it will also clunk --
less than 1/16 movement is OK.

Be aware that the rear links also squeak and groan as they fail.

Replacing the ball joint is easy -- jack the car up and put a jack
stand under the control arm, then lower the car onto the jack stand.
If you think you need to do both, put a jack stand under the control
arm on each side. Use the hole for the spring compressor, you want
the weight of the car sitting on the control arm as you must remove
the strut.

Remove the strut, then remove the clamping screw that hold the
steering knuckle to the ball joint. You will need to tap a cold
chisel or fat screwdriver into the slot on the back side to get it to
slip off, usually. I use a Harbor Freight Ball Joint tool with some
bearing retainer rings stacked around the ball joint on top to push it
down and out of the control arm. The adapters in the kit will work
just fine to put a new one in.

Make sure that the notches in the flange are lined up perpendicular to
the centerline -- the joints are directional and will fail quickly if
you don't. The originals on my W124 had one notch pointing to the
centerline, the replacements have two.

Not a bad job at all. If the struts are squeaking at the top, put a
new bumper on them, and if the dust boots are not new, replace them
too -- the struts will last longer without dirt piling up on the top
seal!

Cheaper by any run is donor car, some of the colored panels

Re: [MBZ] 124 front suspension

2009-11-30 Thread Dieselhead
Thank you. I know this is the RF. One of the rear links is squeaking
too. You refer to bearing retainer rings and Kaleb talks about a pipe.
By bearing retainer rings do you mean the thin circular spring? I
take it you are putting something on that fits the taper, or do you mean
a pipe that does not contact the taper, but transmits the pressure to
the top of the joint, below/beyond the taper? If a pipe works, it
sounds more like a sleeve type bushing.

I will jack it up to confirm the diagnosis.

I was told I needed the spring compressor to change the struts. It
worked, and there was no danger of the spring getting free to cause
damage. I wondered if I could do it the old way, with a jack under the
LCA. When I worked on the rear, I used the jack under the LCA to let
the pressure off the spring after the outer end was loose.

On 11/29/09 10:49 PM, Peter Frederick wrote:

If the struts are squeaking at the top, put a
new bumper on them, and if the dust boots are not new, replace them
too -- the struts will last longer without dirt piling up on the top
seal!

latest run of BMWs has seen the company soften the looks a bit. Seems a lot
of journalists didn't care for either the 7 or 5 series looks. I'm not sure
why companies pay so much attention to such things, I doubt many car
reviewers park either a 5 or 7 Series in their garage. Both have been very
popular around here, and sold well.

I remember not that long ago, seems the journalist world were beating BMW up
for their iDrive system, along with all their rivals, including Mercedes. I
can't think of a high end car manufacture today who hasn't copied BMWs
system in one way or another.

MUCH better than the 126. It is more comfortable, has better luxury
features, and get significantly better fuel mileage. I drove up the
in-laws this past week and for the whole trip I got 24.6 mpg - that
includes a little bit of in town driving and driving at 70-80 mph on
the turnpike. I love the car.

I think that BMWs also definitely have the edge in the looks
department at least for the last 10-15 years or so. Mercedes have
become very generic looking, hard to tell them apart from an Asian car
now. BMWs still have a unique look, immediately identifiable.

Re: [MBZ] Faulty W123 speedometer in 1983 300TD

2009-11-30 Thread ernest breakfield
since you're reporting that your speedo is reading too high based on
your test, i'd say the root of your problem is not your tire size;
larger tires than stock make the speedo indicate lower than reality, not
high.

speedos and odometers don't even always agree with each other, so
before i got too far into trying to correct anything, i'd re-test
without depending on one to check the other.
i'd suggest finding a stretch of highway (the straighter the better)
that's got clearly marked mile markers on the roadside. take an odometer
reading at one, and see how it compares to other mile markers a mile or
ten down the road. Speedos are allowed to read up to 10% high, but never
low. my experience has been that Odos are typically closer to accurate.

i'm not certain of this model, but isn't the speedo driven off of
the transmission in these cars?
if you find a major error in Odo readings based on a comparison to
highway mileage markers, i'd be very suspicious of the speedo drive gear
if that's in a replacement transmission.
1985 was a weird year for MBZ diesels; they allegedly had a
different Injection pump causing them to make a little bit more power,
and a different (higher) differential ratio to allow the engine to turn
over slower at a given speed. (there was also the Calif vs Federal
versions, but i don't think that affected anything in the driveline.)
if your '85 transmission has different speedo gear ratio in the
transmission than your '83 chassis speedometer 'expected', that might
seem to explain the difference you're seeing, even though the oversize
tires would actually be very slightly correcting for it.

2009-11-30 Thread ernest breakfield

hi Andrew!

sorry, you might be on to something there, but i'm not sure of the
best answer for this one; it would probably be wise to first confirm if
the speedo is driven off of the tranny before drawing any conclusions
and proposing any solution. (i'm sure this should be an easy question
for many of the wizards on this list; i just don't dare make the
assumption in this case.)

*IF* the speedo is indeed driven off of the trans, the next question
would be to figure out if it's easier to swap the speedo drive
componentry with one of the proper ratio, or if it's more practical to
swap something on the instrument panel end. (for example, i know in the
case of my J**p or my BMW GS, it's relatively simple to swap speedo
drive units of different ratios.)

cheers!

[MBZ] OT, how to get pics off digital camera

2009-11-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
For work, I had a Nikon D40 I used, and when plugged into the computer,
it would pop up a window asking what you wanted to do, one of which
options would be to open folder to view pics. So now I bought myself
this D3000 for work and when plugged in, it does not have that option at
all, basically will only let you import the photos to your computer, not
just open the folder to see which ones you want. Rather than being
listed as a removable drive in my computer its listed under scanners
and camera. Is there a setting somewhere on the computer to treat it as
a removable drive, or somewhat to be able to just open folder, rather
than only allowing to import photos? Its basically not treating the
camera as a drive, like most cameras I have used.

yeah, i've noticed this too with some cameras. i've just started importing
them into iphoto and deleting the ones i don't want there.

alternatively, you can just start using a card reader as well. you can get

just becomes a drive.

it's not an answer to your issue, but just how i've dealt with this issue

2009-11-30 Thread Rich Thomas
I just got a D5000 and I notice sometimes that Windows Explorer (the
file manager app, I think that is what it is called) won't recognize the
files on the camera until I run the Nikon photo app, which won't
recognize the camera or any pics on it (!!! go figure). Then if I
refresh the WE view of the camera in file manager it shows the pics on
the camera card and you can pick and move them, delete them, whatever.
I have no idea why it does this, I think the two apps conflict with each
other somehow. It didn't do that until I installed to Nikon app, which
looks like about 30 other photo management apps, kinda lame. the window
does pop up asking what you want to do though when I plug it in, and the
cam shows up as a plugged-in device/drive on WE.

Take a look on the cam menu and see if there is some setting to make it
act like a hard drive when it is plugged in, I vaguely recall that
somewhere on my cam menus. Aslo, are you turning the cam on after you
plug it in?

It probably uses an SDHC card instead of a normal SD card. If you want
it as a drive letter you'll need to get an SDHC card reader (normal SD

[MBZ] I got me a bent rod

Well I got the oil pan off today and got the #1 rod and piston pulled
out. Unless I am cross eyed, this rod looks bent to me. One thing I
just noticed is that it looks like the cross hatch marks in #1 are
completely worn off for about 1/2 inch or so along the front side of the
cylinder. I got a pic which I believe shows this. Check out the pics
and see what you think. I for sure need to do #1 rod, but I sure would
like to replace all 6 while the thing is out and apart. Nothing else
shows any signs of problems though. I wonder if #1 is going to be OK
even with that patch of worn off cross marks? Anything I need to do to
#1, rehone it or anything?

Take the rod back to the MB dealer and see if they will give you a new
one. And the other 5 while you're at it.

yep, it is using a SDHC card, wonder if I use a regular SD car if it

I have look thru the menus and I do not see anything related to that.
Yes, I am turning on the camera when plugged in.

refresh the WE view of the camera in file manager it shows the pics on
the camera card and you can pick and move them, delete them,
whatever. I have no idea why it does this, I think the two apps
conflict with each other somehow. It didn't do that until I installed
to Nikon app, which looks like about 30 other photo management apps,
kinda lame. the window does pop up asking what you want to do though
when I plug it in, and the cam shows up as a plugged-in device/drive
on WE.

Take a look on the cam menu and see if there is some setting to make
it act like a hard drive when it is plugged in, I vaguely recall that
somewhere on my cam menus. Aslo, are you turning the cam on after you
plug it in?

since you're reporting that your speedo is reading too high based on
your test, i'd say the root of your problem is not your tire size;
larger tires than stock make the speedo indicate lower than reality, not
high.

speedos and odometers don't even always agree with each other, so
before i got too far into trying to correct anything, i'd re-test
without depending on one to check the other.
i'd suggest finding a stretch of highway (the straighter the better)
that's got clearly marked mile markers on the roadside. take an odometer
reading at one, and see how it compares to other mile markers a mile or
ten down the road.

(there was also the Calif vs Federal
versions, but i don't think that affected anything in the driveline.)
if your '85 transmission has different speedo gear ratio in the
transmission than your '83 chassis speedometer 'expected', that might
seem to explain the difference you're seeing, even though the oversize
tires would actually be very slightly correcting for it.

cheers!

[MBZ] OT: health update

2009-11-30 Thread Curt Raymond
In case anybody's been wondering I had a followup with the doc today. You might
remember a couple months ago I started having chest pains.
Before you say anything its not my heart. I've had a stress test and if I were
any more normal I'd be a freak. Its also not a chest infection (my first guess)
and the bloodwork doesn't show anything.
A month ago he put me on Naproxin (like Aleve but stronger) to see if I had a
muscle strain. Strangely that made me feel worse. I cut wood at camp a couple
weeks ago and could work no more than 4 minutes with a 15 minute break...
I've also noticed some days its not bad but some days its horrible. Saturday
for instance I took the dog for a long walk and felt great. Yesterday I took
the dog for a short walk and felt lousy. I'd started guessing it might have
something to do with what I eat.
Almost like he's reading my mind the doc says it might have something to do
with my stomach so we're trying an acid blocker (like Prilosec but stronger)
for a few days. I took one an hour ago, we'll see how it goes. Assuming this
makes me feel better we'll spend some time digging around in my guts to find
out whats going on. Thats a fun thought for the holidays huh?

Amazing how interconnected our bodies are, something wrong in my gut is
apparently (well possibly anyway) making my chest and left arm hurt, how
weird...

Do you have any precision measuring tools? I should think that at the very
least, you need to know how much out of
round that cylinder may be. Don't have any idea on specs but if it is out much,
one would think it would require a
re-bore and oversize piston in order to be much good.

Subject: [MBZ] I got me a bent rod

Was it a Garmin? I cant remember. The one I have had for several years
is a Lowrance Iway 500c, but the maps are starting to get a little
outdated and there is not update available for it. The one that
replaced it, the 600c is also out of production and I guess Lowrance is
getting out of the auto gps business. Its quite a shame. I was looking
at the stuff at best buy or wherever, the Garmins, Tomtom etc, and the
Lowrance is just the Mercedes of GPS units, the rest seem just cheap in
comparison.

Oh and other than the naproxin incident I haven't gotten any worse in a month

We used some two part clamps used to locate a shaft running in pillow
block bearings left over from the saw mill. You want something to
press on the outer part of the ball joint to shove it out of the
control arm, pressing on the movable part usually just drives it out
the bottom.

You need a compressor to change struts if you do not support the
control arm with a jack stand (NOT a floor jack, they can, and do,
leak down) with the car sitting on it. On a lift, you must use a
compressor (and it's much safer, too).

The rear spring is much shorter fully extended, a jack is fine to let
it out.

You will need a new sleeve, a new piston, and a new rod at a bare
minimum. My brother has a perfect example of what you will get if
you don't replace that sleeve (or sleeve that cylinder if it doesn't
currently have one, some didn't for a while, I think). The
combustion leakage down the gap will burn the rings and eat the
cylinder wall.

If you have the original rods, you need a whole set as the new ones
are considerably heavier.

You may have the option of oversized pistons, but they aren't cheap
either.

You should also investigate a compressed nerve in your neck or back

since you're reporting that your speedo is reading too high based on
 your test, i'd say the root of your problem is not your tire size;
larger tires than stock make the speedo indicate lower than reality, not
 high.

speedos and odometers don't even always agree with each other, so
before i got too far into trying to correct anything, i'd re-test
without depending on one to check the other.
i'd suggest finding a stretch of highway (the straighter the better)
that's got clearly marked mile markers on the roadside. take an odometer
reading at one, and see how it compares to other mile markers a mile or
ten down the road.

(there was also the Calif vs Federal
versions, but i don't think that affected anything in the driveline.)
if your '85 transmission has different speedo gear ratio in the
transmission than your '83 chassis speedometer 'expected', that might
seem to explain the difference you're seeing, even though the oversize
tires would actually be very slightly correcting for it.

 cheers!

Before you say anything its not my heart. I've had a stress test and if
I were any more normal I'd be a freak. Its also not a chest infection
(my first guess) and the bloodwork doesn't show anything.
  A
month ago he put me on Naproxin (like Aleve but stronger) to see if I
had a muscle strain. Strangely that made me feel worse. I cut wood at
camp a couple weeks ago and could work no more than 4 minutes with a 15
 minute break...
I've also noticed some days its not bad but
some days its horrible. Saturday for instance I took the dog for a long
walk and felt great. Yesterday I took the dog for a short walk and felt
lousy. I'd started guessing it might have something to do with what I
 eat.
Almost like he's reading my mind the doc says it might
have something to do with my stomach so we're trying an acid blocker
(like Prilosec but stronger) for a few days. I took one an hour ago,
we'll see how it goes. Assuming this makes me feel better we'll spend
some time digging around in my guts to find out whats going on. Thats a
fun thought for the holidays huh?

  Amazing how
interconnected our bodies are, something wrong in my gut is apparently
(well possibly anyway) making my chest and left arm hurt, how weird...

Thats more or less what the naproxin was testing for. As an anti-inflamitory it
should have countered at least a little of that kind of thing.
I'm pretty familiar with what you describe except it usually effects my left
leg which in fact got noticably better during the naproxin days. Where the
naproxin made my chest worse it leads us away from any muscle related issues.

Still the results of this acid blocker test will tell us more.

Diagnosing a physical ailment is not so unlike troubleshooting any other kind
of problem, by different tests we're slowly weeding out the things it could be
until we come up with what it is. The thing I hate is the amount of TIME this
all takes...

Re: [MBZ] OT: health update

2009-11-30 Thread LWB250
Don't discount anxiety.  I have never had a problem sleeping in my life until
the last year or so.  With my new job/business my sleep patterns went south big
time.  After about 6 months of minimal sleep, mainly because I would wake up at
3:30 and lay there worrying about what I had to do the next day, I saw my
doctor.

He put me on some really low dose anti-anxiety drug that I take at bedtime,
which has helped immensely.  I still wake up early and my mind starts racing,
but at least I can get a good 6-7 hours of sleep a night now.

I am pretty anti-prescription drugs, for that matter, I rarely take any OTC
stuff, either, but I simply could not go on the way I was.

I look forward to the day when my anxiety level drops to the point where I can
sleep normally.  I don't take it on the weekends, which means I don't always
get a good night's sleep then, but I can sleep in if necessary, too..

If you have the original rods, you need a whole set as the new ones
are considerably heavier.

You may have the option of oversized pistons, but they aren't cheap

since you're reporting that your speedo is reading too high based on

larger tires than stock make the speedo indicate lower than reality, not
high.

speedos and odometers don't even always agree with each other, so

i'd suggest finding a stretch of highway (the straighter the better)
that's got clearly marked mile markers on the roadside. take an odometer
reading at one, and see how it compares to other mile markers a mile or
ten down the road.

Re: [MBZ] I got me a bent rod

2009-11-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Yea, I have an electronic bore guage but I dont think I am using it
properly. I did measure everything before I pulled the engine out and
posted the results I got, but I am not sure if I am reading it correctly
or what I am even seeing. Here is that email with the results

Ok, so I measured to bores today with my HF electronic bore gauge. Keep
in mind I have never done this before, and not sure if I even did it
right. Here is what I did. I set my HF digital caliper to the spec of
the bore, approx 89.01. With it set there bore gauge gives a base
reading of - .424mm. Below are the measuring points I took

1=bottom of cyl
2=middle of cyl
3=top of cyl
a=longitudinal
b=lateral

This is what I got for measurements. On some of these, I took the same
measurement SEVERAL times till I was able to somewhat repeat the
results, all numbers are actually -(negative).

Cylinder #1 #2 #3
   a b a b
ab

#1 .418.410 .416 .410
.422 .398
#2 .426.416 .422 .418
.420 .418
#3 .426.422 .422 .420
.420 .412

#4 .428 (not record) .420 .424 .412 .412
#5 .424.418 .420 .420
.420 .420
#6 .426.426 .426 .428
.414 .422

So, thats what I got. Trying to figure out if any of this tells me if I
have ovaled cylinders or not. Basically the spec is 89.007-89.012, so
we will say that the base setting of -.424 is 89.01, then the numbers
listed above, such as the first one -.418, that measurement would be
about .006 more than the base measurement of 89.01, correct? Or is my
math all wrong here. Given the numbers above, and the fact that I am no
expert, does it seem like I might have a problem?

R A Bennell wrote:

My guess is that the spec gives you a range of .005, and the range of #1 at
the bottom is .008 and .006 in the middle, but only .004 at the top. The
bottom and middle are out of spec, regardless of what the absolute
measurement is.
