BTDT. The best part of the parade is Dykes on Bikes, a huge group of dykes, many dressed outrageously, on Harleys. I saw the parade back in the 90s and had my oldest son with me at the time. [MBZ] It's always something...
Jill and Daniel took her 560SL to Wyoming for a mini-vacation, and on her way back she called me from Missoula, three hours away from home. The car wouldn't start, and the aftermarket alarm was honking away at her. I ran her through the basic diagnosis procedure with the lights, neutral switch, etc., but didn't get good results. (A lack of calmness doesn't help.) Then I had her get out the cheap Harbor Freight multimeter I keep in the trunk, and the battery measured around 10V. Oops! She called AAA to get a jump, and the guy knew what to do. He checked the battery voltage while it was running and it was 13V or so, enough to prove that the alternator wasn't totally dead. She got home (carefully husbanding the battery charge) without further incident, and I put the car on charge. It was thirsty, but not inordinately so. It probably needs a new brush pack, they usually get intermittent at their end-of-life. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Probably a limitation of the software. NTFS is the native file system for winders 2000, XP and all later M$ OS. I don't know of anything within NTFS that would limit the file size, unless a policy is set to limit user file space, but that should limit the overall file space, not per file allocation. Gerry, I think you'll be hard pressed to fid a way to do this as you describe, without a lot of tinkering on the back ends of both OS'. The simplest way, IMHO, is to go with NAS (network attached storage) such as a RAID or Drobo and just have separate partitions set up for each OS. To mirror each machine at that point would be pretty simple. Your reference to mirroring I suspect is relative to a RAID array, which would have to be unique for each OS, I believe. Keep in mind that the only real redundant RAID setup is level 5 or above. Levels 0, 1 and 2 won't give you the integrity you require. You're talking about a fairly substantial undertaking, even with the price of storage these days. Why exactly are you wanting to do this? Maybe I missed this part of the thread, but I don't recall anyone asking. If it's just to maintain data integrity and/or backups, you're overthinking this big time. If data integrity/redundancy is all you're looking for, just buy a couple of NAS boxes that are set up for RAID 5. Unless your PC has room for at least three drives, you're SOL there. As a newby to Macbooks, thought I'd ask if there was a simple way to hook an apple os/hd to an MS os/hd such that each could be the backup for the other in case one self destructed. Apparently there isn't. I'll read up on NAS, RAID, and DROBO; and probably set up something like that. Here in the lightning capital of the world (along with S. Africa) we need some sort of backup. Lightning has only gotten to one monitor and two printers so far, but it might be a computer next time. Re: [MBZ] OT external HDs ?? + bit of benz content.
Unless I'm mistake, the Mac will read/write a MS format disk (this works fine with USB flash drives) so just use a disk formated on the PC, hook up to the Mac as needed. You will not be able to inter-operate programs, of course, but data will be readable on both machines if the same programs are used on both (i.e. Word, Photoshope, iTunes, etc). File formats are the same for both. Otherwise, I'd suggest a server system where all the files are on a remote machine that gets backed up regularly. This is standard workplace practice these days -- everything we do at work is now on a remote desktop except for the forms we use from some reports that need the date and sample time changed each time. Those are a standard format provided by the State of Indiana, so we aren't risking anything by keeping them local. If these are critical or very expensive files (and the music will be $ $$ to replace, I think), make absolutely positive that you have working backups (test them periodically -- I've run into a situation in the past where the backup would never load, rendering it completely useless) AND that you keep a copy off-site. That way if someone breaks in and steals your stuff, the house burns down, or something equally horrible, you still have your data in the remote location. I took typing back in junior high school too. Having played guitar, I found typing a snap. High score in the class. hee hee. I ended each lesson thinking, what a was of time, when will I ever type anything in life?? A year later, I took an introduction to computers, where we had to fill out punch cardshundreds/thousands of them to make the computer do the simplest task. Funny how the keyboard is the one part of the computer that has stuck around over the years, more of less, unchanged. What will be the interface that replaces it ?? Stay tuned. Theres more than one flavor of NTFS. IIRC Win2k came with NTFS2k which is different than old NT4 NTFS which had a 4GB file size limit. IIRC old NTFS had a 4GB partition limit too but that was pretty easily worked around with tools like Partition Magic. I'd say reimage with Windows and in the future only ever format NTFS with a Windows box. Its only been a quite recent development that Linux boxes can write to NTFS its quite possible they're using an older implementation. -Curt Date: Sat, 26 Jun 2010 08:26:43 -0500 From: Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT external HDs ?? + bit of benz content. Re: [MBZ] 4 GB NTFS
Mitch - I did a search of Vista Help and came up with this -- It specifically says NTFS supports files 4GB. But there are other comments below that may shed some light - What can I do if I get an error that states the movie file exceeds 4 gigabytes? This error occurs if you are publishing a movie with a file size that exceeds the 4 gigabyte (GB) file size limit imposed by the FAT32 file system. This problem may especially occur with long movies that are published with a high setting on a volume or partition that is using the FAT32 file system. To address this issue, do one or more of the following: Reduce the length of your movie by removing items from the storyboard/timeline in Windows Movie Maker, and then try to publish your movie again. Choose a lower quality or file size setting when publishing your movie. To learn more, see Movie settings: frequently asked questions. If your computer's hard disk drive has multiple partitions, and one is formatted using the NTFS file system, then publish your movie to the NTFS partition. The NTFS file system supports files larger than 4 GB. If you are recording your published movie to tape and you have multiple partitions on your hard disk, and if one partition is formatted using the NTFS file system, you can use that partition as your temporary storage location. To change the temporary storage location, do the following: Click Tools, and then click Options. In the Temporary Storage box, choose the drive that is formatted using the NTFS file system. Convert your file system to use the NTFS file system. The NTFS file system supports files larger than 4 GB. To learn more, see Convert a volume to NTFS format. LarryT OilAnalysis Time? Re: [MBZ] OT external HDs ?? + bit of benz content.
I believe this is the correct explanation. the linux NTFS was the NT4 implementation that was limited to 4 Gb. Move the stuff off and reformat with a winders 2000 or newer OS, or with a third party partition manager. NTFS is the native file system for winders 2000, XP and all later M$ OS. I don't know of anything within NTFS that would limit the file size, unless a policy is set to limit user file space, but that should limit the overall file space, not per file allocation. Remember 8 bits to the byte, 8Mb to 1MB. Yeah, I was talking OTA. Found this on Wiki, basically correct? Each commercial terrestrial DTV channel in North America is permitted to be broadcast at a data rate up to 19 megabits per second, or 2.375 megabytes per second. However, the broadcaster does not need to use this entire bandwidth for just one broadcast channel. Instead the broadcast can be subdivided across several video subchannels (aka feeds) of varying quality and compression rates, including non-video datacasting services that allow one-way high-bandwidth streaming of data to computers. My old Pinnacle setup records VCD at 1.15 MB and DVD at 6.0MB by default. I can adjust that up or down a bit if I choose. My old recordings from analog TV were usually made with a custom setting of MPEG 1-HQ, 352x240, 2.0 or 2.5MB/sec. Now I record DTV at 720x480, I usually get decent motion at 6MB/s. One of our local channels has standard, HD, and two alternate programs. My 1991 Jetta was one of the lowest-maintenance cost cars I owned. The 1.8l 8v engine was bulletproof, as was the 5 speed manual transmission. I did have recurring issues with the coolant temp sensors but they are about a $5 part and easily switched out with nothing but a pair of pliers to pull the retaining clip. I replace the idle stabilization valve once, that was a couple of hundred but a simple RR. Also had to replace the electric radiator fan motor a couple of times, a bit of a tight squeeze but otherwise straightforward and not expensive. The dealer never touched the car, though. I did everything myself from day 1 except exhaust work, that went to a local independent exhaust shop. Re: [MBZ] OT external HDs ?? + bit of benz content.
You can initialize an NTFS disk with an MBR or GPT partition table. MBR can't see past 2Tb. GPT can. The current implementation of NTFS is limited to 4 million clusters. If you use 512 byte sectors, that limits the partition size to 2Tb. You need to increase the cluster size if you need a larger partition. Extending a volume is subject to the same limitation. Unfortunately there are no utilities that are able to do an in-place migration that increases cluster size. You need to initially set a cluster size that allows expansion to the maximum partition size you might need. I've personally worked with single NTFS partitions of 20Tb (Raid-6 array of 16 x 1.5Tb drives) . That required using a 8K cluster size. Only the Itanium specific versions of Windows can boot from GPT disks. All recent vintage 3Ware and Areca controllers allow designating a boot partition 2Tb out of a much larger array so you don't need dedicated boot drives (you can boot from the array). This allows you to create a virtual MBR disk to boot from while most of the array capacity is in a GPT disk. -Dave Walton On Sat, Jun 26, 2010 at 10:20 PM, Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu wrote: On Sat, 26 Jun 2010 18:35 -0500, Fmiser fmi...@gmail.com wrote: I'm pretty sure NTFS is limited to 4G It's not, but FAT (the legacy DOS filesystem) might have been. Re: [MBZ] whats wrong with this one
I don't know about anyone else here, but I bristled at the concept of taking typing class as junior in high school in 1968. Ten years later my Mom slapped me upside the head and told me to drop my one filler HS class and replace it with typing. You're going into computers, you're going to want to know how to type. Duh! When nobody was looking I'd open up the machines and see how they worked. I watched the repairman at his business, too. That's how I learned how to field-strip a Selectric II in under a minute! Re: [MBZ] 126 STICKING CALIPER
It's a fairly easy rebuild, replacements are not expensive, but do replace all the hoses -- it's now time, and you don't want one to either leak or develop a one-way valve. Re: [MBZ] whats wrong with this one
Did you know that Selectric I's were used as computer terminals? That's why there used to be that strange, very low baud rate on UNIX and IBM serial connections -- it was set to allow a full carriage return on the Selectric terminal! Noisy bastards, but they do in fact live forever. Very very slick system, too. I even remember how to adjust them, I think, for proper letter placement on the page. When they get old, you sorta have to chose which letters won't align exactly right unless you want to replace parts, and that's not really an option any more. The models after the Selectric III in 1978 or so were all hybrid -- electronic with electromechanical actuation. They were all junk, too -- very high failure rate in 5 years (as in 75% and up). Put IBM out of the typewriter buisness, as all the other machines with daisy wheels worked better and longer and were cheaper. Re: [MBZ] 126 STICKING CALIPER
Check the hose first. With the brake seized, open the bleeder or the loosen the hose at the caliper. If the caliper is really sticking it's probably rusty and may need more than just new rubber. I'd go with a reman or good used ... quicker, cleaner, and sure to do the job. But with a skidding tire, I'd guess a bad hose. You have been replacing brake fluid every three years or so ... Re: [MBZ] whats wrong with this one
Steam powered selectric. I like it! (Laughing) I too took a typing class. (70 or 71 ) It was a filler class as I had all the credits to graduate, but back then they didn't let anyone gradgitate early. I was a pretty good hunt and peck typist before that class. After the class, I was not good at either. I think it was my senior year. Kurt Weiler and I sat in a corner and didn't take it too seriously. The one thing I never expected to survive into the computer age was the querty keyboard. At least it should be dvorak. I don't know about anyone else here, but I bristled at the concept of taking typing class as junior in high school in 1968. When nobody was looking I'd open up the machines and see how they worked. I watched the repairman at his business, too. That's how I learned how to field-strip a Selectric II in under a minute!
