I bought my '83 240D in NJ and it was almost empty when I got it. When I pulled into the station the (probably Indian) attendant grabbed a gas nozzle. I leaped from the cab No, diesel. He shook his head and brandished the nozzle Gasoline, good stuff! I started to get agitated, after all I'd only owned the car fifteen minutes, Diesel fuel. Gasoline! I pointed at the trunk deck Diesel fuel. He started to remove the fuel cap and I grabbed his wrist, meanwhile the other attendant in the office is frantically dialing the phone, Look man, if you put gas in my car I'll break your arm. He stepped away and put the nozzle up. I proceeded to fuel my car my own dammed self. As I was getting finished the cop rolled up. I explained what had happened and he laughed. If you screw up and put in overwattage bulbs on a 123 you will melt the light pipe ends, and the lighting will go _down_! Either change to some kind of ultra-bright LED's to fill the pipes, or line things with shiny aluminum foil. [MBZ] mixing diesel and gasoline
Happy Thanksgiving to all. Got a question. I am presuming that Jim's comment Rest assured that your older MB engines will survive the experience, though they won't be happy about it. Those inline Bosch pumps are quite hardy refers to mixing gas with diesel in a diesel engine. Forgive me if I misunderstood what he meant. ( His comment about the Bosch pump makes me wonder if I understood correctly). This reminded me of an incident a number years ago in the previous century. I had been told that introducing even a small amount of gasoline into the diesel fuel would result in a violent explosion in the cylinders that could do catastrophic damage to the engine, especially the pistons. Well one day shortly after I refueled the car, my wife called from about 10 miles away to tell me that the 82 240D was running exceptionally bad. I drove down in the other vehicle, traded vehicles with her and drove the diesel home. It run unusually rough, bucked, and jerked all the way home. In my appalling ignorance at the time, I tried racing the engine, driving fast, and a few other abusive tactics. The next day, I took it to a shop and was told they smelled gas at the filler cap, so they drained the tank. I was horrifed to find that there was gas in the fuel. Couldn't believe I had filled the tank with gas. When I asked the tech how much damage likely was done, his comment was that I was lucky that most of the fuel was gas. This made no sense to me. Maybe he meant that a small amount of gas might not have been noticeable and would have done more damage over time? The car suvived the experience. I never noticed any aftereffects, even years later. This leads me to wonder about what does happen if gas gets in the diesel fuel. Doesn't sound like it is catastrophic. What do you think? Re: [MBZ] mixing diesel and gasoline
told that introducing even a small amount of gasoline into the diesel fuel would result in a violent explosion in the cylinders that could do catastrophic damage to the engine, especially the pistons. Can't explode violently, there's no mixture except at the flame front. Might burn hotter than intended, so at full fueling it might well do damage. But it runs so bad that this is unlikely, IMHO. My guess is that the reason it runs so badly is that the injectors are designed for the viscosity of diesel fuel, and it just doesn't work right with gasoline. This leads me to wonder about what does happen if gas gets in the diesel fuel. Doesn't sound like it is catastrophic. What do you think? For rotary pumps that are lubricated by the fuel, it is indeed catastrophic. For the inlines, largely lubed by engine oil, not so bad. Remember that in the _owner's manual_, older MB's recommended up to 25% gasoline for severe winter duty as a thinner. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Monkeys
I had a friend in PDX who was DM for BP in the late 80's. They do train the monkeys, but not very well. It is a dead end job and is mostly taken by crackheads between detox stints, or single mothers with many kids. If you hang around long enough you get to move inside to the cash register. That is where the moms were. AS for diesel, you pump your own. The monkeys will take your charge card and make sure you are rung up, but will not pump it, because they were not trained on it and the trucking folks had the law written to exempt them from the pump jockey silliness. clay On Nov 24, 2011, at 7:49 AM, Jim Cathey wrote: Diesel fuel. Some year I need to solder a hot wire to the left light terminal on the 81 240D. I think it has been out the whole time i've had the car. Is it just roll up a 1 x 1 1/4 square of foil and put it in the hole, then stuff the bulb in or is there some complex procedure? I have never noticed light pipes in the 123 cluster, but it has been 10+ years since I had one out. The 124 and 126 use fiber optics to move light around. I had the speedo out last year to fix the odo (slipping gear, fixed with a drop of glue) and forgot to mark the position of the speedo needle when I took it off. Now it reads 5mph high at all speeds (MB speedos are pretty accurate). So I need to take it back out, mark the position measure the distance of 5mph, mark that off lower than the mark where the speedo rests (after being lifted over the stop peg) and reset the needle there. I'm lucky its exactly 5mph... It could be somebody fixed yours in the past and did the same thing. The odo is actually pretty easy to fix, just lots of little gears to get back into place depending on how much you take it apart. Remember to clean 'em while you're there. Its also good practice to note the exact mileage when you take it apart so you can get it back together the same. In my case I actually rolled on about 20k to account for Dwight driving the car for a couple years with a busted odo. -Curt Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2011 14:46:06 -0500 From: Michael Canfield slozuk...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] W116 electrical gremlins Message-ID: calhj_1ctmdhlxvosg+s+9kywnm-hkj4nlzrqrupkjuxegjd...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 On Nov 23, 2011 2:12 PM, Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com wrote: Actually I think the best thing that came out of that whole discussion was Jim's post about clipping posts. [MBZ] 300td travel
Folks i've just done some epic travel in my 82 300td. Two weeks ago, i dragged a 1500 lb letterpress from athens, ga to charleston, sc. behind the 300td on a trailer Then last weekend, i dragged a 1050 lb press from athens to Tulsa, ok, delivered that. Then i went to OK City and picked up another 1050 lb press and dragged it back to athens. Two days later, i drove 240 miles down to Tybee Island, GA. All of this was done running WVO. I hauled all the fuel along, as well. It was unexpectedly cold in OK on Sunday (not in the forecast), so i put in a few gallons of diesel and about a gallon of gas to lower the viscosity. No real problems at all on any of the trips. I even ran the AC on part of the OK trip, but my heater was erratic . it would come on for a few minutes and then go cold ideas? mono valve? something else I did resolder the heater control a few years ago Yes, i have a lot to be thankful for. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

So I need to take it back out, mark the position measure the distance of 5mph, mark that off lower than the mark where the speedo rests (after being lifted over the stop peg) and reset the needle there. It's easier than that. If you look at the outside of the face, beyond the bezel (when it's out) you'll find a paint mark on it. That's where the needle is put on, then you lift it over the peg. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

...Total cost is ~$250 for an aftermarket setup, oem offerings were usually in the uplevel option packages before they were mandated... When they became mandatory they became standard equipment. My car has one per wheel and they are US made. They have caused a few warranty claims and no thinking person would pay MB prices but when I mounted a set of Nokian winter tires on my spare wheels, I paid Tire Rack about 70 bucks each for a set. They are drop-in replaceent for a standard valve core with an o-ring inside and a fixing nut on the outside. I took home a 2011 C-300 Sport service loaner recently and it could display all four pressure readings at the same time. These thing have caused more confusion among the uninformed than which Oil? A complete waste of time brought along for ninnys who can't be bothered to just check the dammed tire pressure. Any mileage gains they make by having tires aired up is lost by the added weight of the system... Piffle. Re: [MBZ] mixing diesel and gasoline
He's lucky. I had a co-worker who had an Olds with the converted Diesel 350. He ran out of fuel about a half of mile from our heliport, Rather than walking to our hanger and getting a gal of JP4 he poured about 2 gal of gas he had in a can in the trunk (it was for the base mower). Cranked up the Olds put it in gear and started to accelerate. BIG Kaboom ensued. I was on the flight line doing a preflight and heard it. About 10 min later he comes walking up to get help to tow the car to the base. Right hand head had blown off and put a dent in the hood. GM had just replaced the under warranty. That was one of GM's stupid ideas that gave diesels a bad name. Russ W. Sounds like I should try stuffing in some alum foil at that time. Can someone elaborate on this? Is it just roll up a 1 x 1 1/4 square of foil and put it in the hole, then stuff the bulb in or is there some complex procedure? On the top of the cluster you will see two channels with covers over them. Carefully Remove the covers using a small flat bladed screwdriver. This will expose the light pipes. You can use Alum Foil or better yet a strip from a Mylar Balloon, I've done both of my 240's one each way. The Mylar works better. Use a drop of Super Glue on each end to secure the mylar or foil to the light pipe. Then use hot glue to secure the covers and change out the bulbs while you are in there. One of the 240's the bulbs were black. Makes a world of difference. SWMBO Stopped complaining she couldn'r read the gauges at night after the mod. Her car got the foil mine got the mylar a few months later. She noticed the difference between the two mods. Mylar baloons can be acquired at Dollar Tree for a buck and you don't have to have the filled. Doesn't what printing the balloon has on it the inside is a shiny silver. If you use foil remember to put the shiny side against the pipe. Russ W. I have never noticed light pipes in the 123 cluster, but it has been 10+ years since I had one out. The 124 and 126 use fiber optics to move light around. On 110 and 111, I have turned the light down sometimes, but they were always well lit. The 123 is barely lit enough at best. With one light out, you can barely read the speedo, and you have to pull out a flashlight to read the fuel gauge. On 124 and 126, I leave the light turned up, but always is adequate. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] ok travel
I guess i DID pass by you, Kaleb. Where are you exactly? I went from I-40 through Muskogee (slept there) then Sun afternoon to tulsa where i unloaded the press in the freezing cold about 37, not as predicted. Then i drove in the cold rain to norman, ok where we loaded the machine i bought there. Then i high tailed it back to Ft Smith AR where the weather was warm again. I didn't want to get stranded on the unheated WVO I would have hung around if it had been warm Plus i had to get back to georgia to drive down to Tybee island for thanksgiving!! thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
