[MBZ] UPDATE: 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue
Hi all, UPDATE: With your help and instructions I was able to reset the sunroof switch settingsit has been working correctly for two days now. It was suggested that the leak might be from the windshield seals so I decided to seal the sunroof with plastic and wait for the next storm to narrow down the issue. Torrential rain all night in New York so went out to the car this morning and it was completely dry! Now that the leak is definitely from the sunroof, what could be the causes and fixes? The drains were cleaned out, where to I proceed from here? I researched the Internet and there was mention of a possible recall on the sunroof with he following number: DTB P-B-77.10/24c JUN07 ?? All suggestions will be explored by my son and I during this Father's Day Weekend! Thanks in advance. Bob Sent: Wed, Jun 12, 2013 12:55 pm Subject: Re: [MBZ] 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue During a recent storm I tracked the leak to the inside of a panel on the passenger's side of the dash console. The panel is visible when you open up the passenger's front door. As pointed out this still does not indicate if the leak is coming from the windshield gasket, roof drains etc. A friend worked on cleaning out the sunroof drains but in the process I now have an issue with the sunroof. When pushing the button to close it about six inches from being closed, it stops and reopens. I did some research and there is a Anti-Pinching' feature that was probably disturbed and needs to be reset. Any thoughts of this...some say it has to be reset by a dealer. Instructions or help is greatly appreciated! Tomorrow severe storms in the northeast will help see if the sunroof drains were the source. Now that the leak is definitely from the sunroof, I'm still not 100% convinced, but you might be right. There's enough torque in the body that a windshield might leak or not depending on how it's parked, could there be anything to that? How sure are you that your drapage did not cover any part of the windshield, or affect runoff over it? Is there any chance that while cleaning the drains you either poked through one of the rubber hoses, or pushed it off? Jim, I neglected to mention two facts, one I parked the car in the exact same location in my driveway which is facing in on a fairly steep downward incline. Secondly, the leak was definitely less after my friend cleaned out the drains. He said he had the sunroof off to check the drains thoroughly. He found debris in the right front drain which is on the same side as the leak. The sunroof sits slightly lower than the roof line on all sides, I am not sure if that is a result of the reinstall or it was originally like that when I purchased the car 4 months ago. Also I was very careful to seal the sunroof with tape and plastic not getting near the windshield. Just finished getting the remnants of adhesive off the roof. Appreciate your input. [MBZ] 300E AC Woes
The boy finally got his 92 300E up to our 3rd generation MB indie yesterday, and the response was less than positive. As I expected, they said fixing the AC would cost more than he paid for the car, and therefore wasn't worth it. They say that the compressor is seized, which is why the clutch won't engage. I'm not sure I buy this, as I can turn the compressor by hand, but the clutch does not engage with power applied to it, so I'm still convinced the clutch itself is bad. So now we're on to Plan B, with the assistance (hopefully) of this august group. I may have access to a vacuum pump and an R134a manifold gauge set. More on that in a minute. My thought is to replace the compressor, flush the system, put a new (rebuilt?) compressor and drier on it and recharge with either an R12 equivalent or change over to R134a. My questions revolve around the process and materials used to flush the system, something I have never done, and the use of an alternative refrigerant in an effort to keep the efficiency of R12, since this climate is really tough on 124 systems converted to R134a. Also, rebuilt or new when it comes to a compressor? I'm checking with my former neighbor who is a commercial AC guy. I am pretty sure he has a vacuum pump but not sure about the manifold gauge set. Can you get a HF set that does both R12 and R134a? Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: Opine away
Last I checked the Chicken wagon was also down with transmission issues. Is one of them priority over the other? Yes. The CW is not needed at this time because of the X5, it languishes. The truck is the all-purpose backup, still. For now I drive the SEL, and am very careful where I drive/park so as to avoid altogether the need for reverse. Can he heap be put into summer service or would you switch to the Dodge? Jill's SL is the designated non-truck alternate. The heap would be fine, but no AC and would have to find a set of non-studded tires. (Same tire problem with the CW.) In any kind of pinch the 190D would be next up, but I think it needs more suspension components as it's starting to drive stinky again. car, and therefore wasn't worth it. They say that the compressor is seized, which is why the clutch won't engage. I'm not sure I buy this, as I can turn the compressor by hand, but the clutch does not engage with power applied to it, so I'm still convinced the clutch itself is bad. If you can turn the hub by hand it's not seized. First test the integrity of the clutch itself, try clipping a battery charger onto its terminals. If that's not got an obvious problem like a broken wire try replacing the clutch with a good used unit. Get it clutching, then pull a vacuum and check for leaks. If that's good fill it with test refrigerant and then run an extended leak test. I figure a couple of years is enough for a good test. Then put R12 back in it. :-) My thought is to replace the compressor, flush the system, put a new (rebuilt?) compressor and drier on it and recharge with either an R12 equivalent or change over to R134a. Why flush? If the compressor didn't grenade and it's not open to the elements, it's probably still clean. HC refrigerants don't need the strong drier elements that HCFC's do (no acids as decomposition components), so the drier might still be good enough, if it isn't open to the elements. an alternative refrigerant in an effort to keep the efficiency of R12, HC is reputedly even _more_ effective than R12, but it won't quite handle the highest heats due to the physics of the various gasses. Worth a try. Can you get a HF set that does both R12 and R134a? No. The oils are usually highly incompatible so they don't (and never have) made combined gauge sets. Get (or borrow) an R12 set, if that's what your car had originally. Everybody always wants you to spend a lot of money on AC. Excepting tools, I'm talking about more like $20 all told. (Used AC compressor, for its clutch, plus sauce.) My buddy's Axxess got about a $2k estimate about a decade ago. [MBZ] 240D won't burp
BAH! These are the days that make me want to throw up my hands and get a brand new appliance grade car to be boring in. I can't get my '78 240D to not run hot. Its not overheating but right now the gauge is steady around 200F (max is 250F) with no warm coming from the heat. Okay, backup. Everything was fine, then I realized the short hose from the thermostat to the water pump was leaking. I replaced that Wednesday. Yesterday I messed around for a couple hours between downpours trying to get all the air out. Last night I decided maybe the thermostat was at fault, Q2 had gotten me a new Behr (no country of manufacture listed) so I pulled it this morning and did a test in hot water. The old made in China model seems to start opening a little sooner but both are completely open at the same time. The new one is maybe a little taller overall than the old one. To limit the number of changes I put the old one back in which doesn't seem to have made any difference... I'm down to one running/safe vehicle (rain prevented brake servicing on the 190D) and NEED another so I can go to work Wednesday, this sucks. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] Fwd: UPDATE: Partial Success - 2004 E320 4matic - Water on Front Passenger's Side after Heavy Rain-ADDED Sunroof Issue
Jim, You are right! The leak is somewhere from the right front drain hole in the sunroof to where the windshield pillar meets the top of the console. I poured a pint of water into the drain hole, almost immediately it drained from the bottom of the wheel wheel. But in addition it started dripping from the side of he console. There is no pooling of water in the sunroof area. I opened up the side of the dash console via a plastic cover that is hidden when the passenger's door is closed. I am probably not making myself clear so I attached a picture which shows where it is dripping. The dripping continues for about 15 seconds and stops. Now that I know generally where the leak is coming from any instructions (with pictures) on how to access the area and what to repair. Re: [MBZ] 240D won't burp
I'm starting to worry I'm back to square 1 re: headgasket failure. Just after my last missive I put it up on ramps and left it for an hour. Went back and the coolant was low so I added, started it up and had cabin heat (yay!) so I pulled it down and went for a ride. Everything was looking good so I took a slightly longer loop than I had been but that was a mistake. By the time I got home it was very hot, coolant pouring out from the only half tight radiator cap. I think that might be because of the lack of real pressure and the fact that we're getting pretty watery in there. Probably donw I let it cool another hour, topped it back up, ran it up on the ramps again, let it get up to temp and left it. I *hope* the heater core still has air in it as its been gurgling as of late. I'll go out in a little bit and try 'er again. -Curt Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2013 08:52:55 -0700 From: Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] 240D won't burp Message-ID: 7a807dca-d50a-11e2-a381-000502d9a...@windwireless.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed I get the air out by cracking open the top hose at the radiator and pouring water in until it's running out over my hand, then I push the hose on. '78 240D I'm back to where I started, can't keep coolant in the engine, I've put about 3 gallons in today and its all splashed back out.
