Re: [MBZ] front Struts - 91 300D
Thanks for the info - it sounds like the rubber upper mount is not part of the replacement Struts and must be bought separately. Yes, I will want to replace all needed to avoid RR'ing the struts again. Fortunately my 91 is mostly rust free. Life time warranty?Hmmm I wonder what I have on there now? and if the warranty moved with the title? ;-) I saw the reason for buying bilstein years ago when I had a pair of bilsteins next to a pair of struts made by Monroe or KYB - the shaft on the Bilstein was 1/2 or larger diameter while the other strut was approx half the size. Both sets of struts were for the same car BTW. Sincerely, Larry On 2/28/2014 9:48 PM, Dieselhead wrote: Howdy -- I am going to need front struts before too long. Also, should fasteners be replaced (are they part of the strut kit?) and should any lock-tite or never-seize be placed on the fastener threads or do they come with something to lock them in? I looked at the shocks/struts and they looks to be pretty easy to RR but I seem to recall warnings about the type of spring compressor that is used. Thanks Peter -- Excellent description! I already have the rubber boot that covers the strut shaft - bought them a while back but I knew the difficulty I'd have compressing a strut in good condition and decided to wait. Plus I need to get the clamps to hold them n place. Are the clamps Special? or can I use a large metal hose clamp? The rubber jounce bumper has broken from the top and now slides up and down the exposed shaft. I also plan to replace the upper bumpers. Thanks again for the excellent description... You can easily change them by jacking the car up and putting it down on jack stands under the control arm in the cut-out near the ball joint. The weight of the car will keep the spring in place. Re: [MBZ] front Struts - 91 300D
Buy the clamps from MB. They're cheap. And you'll probably find that they're not clamps - they're really for keeping the bottom portion of the boot open and in place over the strut, if they're like the ones for the later model cars. I just put new boots, buffers and clamps on my 97 SL500. The clamps are like big tie wraps with tabs that project out in four directions. You put the boot on and then put the clamp on the body of the strut near the bottom of the boot. The tabs that project out from the clamp fit in the last convolution of the boot to keep it in place over the strut. Re: [MBZ] More Euro headlights
I am a little late to the party here but I do believe that I have a set of Euro headlights from my 1976 W115 300D that I scrapped long ago. The lights were functioning when I stripped them off the carcass about 10 years ago. Peter Frederick has dibs, since he expressed an interest back then. But I decided to hold onto them with the intention of putting them on my 1975. That never happened so they are available. If Peter doesn't want them they are up for grabs. I have other stuff for W115s also: front grille, chrome trim, hubcaps, A/C stuff, a few badges, instrument cluster, misc bits and pieces. Jim Cathey built a lathe to find the sweet spot in his driveshaft, but most of us don't have space and an adequate junk pile to salvage the needed parts from to do that. Another option is to buy a junkyard driveshaft and try it until you get a good one. (I used this option) I lucked out the first time. Just a thought. I had a Mercury Sable with similar symptoms. It turned out to be a bad shock absorber. That shock worked fine for large motions but it allowed a small amplitude undamped oscillation, probably excited by a small tire imbalance when the wheel speed matched the suspension resonant frequency. This continued over several sets of tires until I changed the shock. -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of kdwittne...@yahoo.com Sent: Saturday, March 01, 2014 5:02 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuild ... now if I can only find the whole car vibration at 75 MPH, must be a bent wheel as I have had four or five sets of new tires on it over the years and now have replaced flex disks and the driveshaft bearing hangar and rebuilt the tranny and it still vibrates. [MBZ] Testing OM603 head for cracks
Dieselvolk, A new chapter has begun in the never-ending saga of the head replacement on my '87 wagon. I finally removed the first replacement head, #20 casting, because of a problem with a hydraulic lifter bore and because the cooling system would remain pressurized overnight, following the rare occasions when I drove the car. This head was supposedly tested for cracks by our best local machine shop. I was really hoping to find evidence that the head gasket had failed, but to my inexperienced eye, it looks fine. So I'm thinking of ways to test the head for cracks. If there is a crack which allows exhaust gas into the cooling system, then if I pressurized the exhaust manifold and immersed the head in water, bubbles from any cooling passage would indicate a crack, no? How much pressure will the exhaust valves hold? Any clever ideas for sealing them closed? I was thinking of using wax, but the melting point is too low. The factory test requires a special plate bolted to the block side of the head, and then the cooling passages are pressurized to 15 psi and the head is immersed in water heated to 80 degrees C. I've also thought about fabricating my own plate from wood. -- Max Dillon Charleston, SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuilding bad vibrations
ooohh that would drive me nuts. My truck had that sort of thing going on, new steer tires and everyhting is good but seeing that you have had tires replaced, we can discount that. Have you checked your wheel bearings, I suppose you would have at some stage in 13 years. Wheel alignment? I would be inclined to remove the drive shaft or at least securely put the back end on axle stands and get up to the magic 75-80. Actually perhaps put it up on stands and see, if the vibration is there, removed drive shaft, if vibration is gone, drive shaft is out of balance. Perhaps you hit a gutter a bit hard and bent something? Things like worn bushes would not be culprit as they would get worser and worser with age. That's the strange thing, usually if it is caused by worn parts, it would get badder. Feeling a vibration is pretty useless as the vibration is transferred through the car. While the immediate present seems to be struggling but fine, it really does not sound to be stable in many many ways in many places. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: transmission rebuild
maybe 120hz at 75mph. vibration, not much sound. Driveline is 3-4x the frequency of a wheel. Pretty easy to tell the difference once you're familiar with it. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

the mercedes world has moved on and left us dinosaurs behind. i mean, think about how big many of us were in this world 15 years ago and are nobody now the game moves forward and if you can't move with it, you become irrelevant On Sat, Mar 1, 2014 at 5:15 PM, Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com wrote: Yes. Or a bent driveshaft I guess. Half shafts seem OK. Might be time to spring for the 15 Bundt cake wheels.
