Re: [MBZ] front Struts - 91 300D

2014-03-01 Thread Larry T
Thanks for the info - it sounds like the rubber upper mount is not part
of the replacement Struts and must be bought separately. Yes, I will
want to replace all needed to avoid RR'ing the struts again.

Fortunately my 91 is mostly rust free.

Life time warranty?Hmmm I wonder what I have on there now? and if
the warranty moved with the title? ;-)

I saw the reason for buying bilstein years ago when I had a pair of
bilsteins next to a pair of struts made by Monroe or KYB - the shaft on
the Bilstein was 1/2 or larger diameter while the other strut was
approx half the size. Both sets of struts were for the same car BTW.

Sincerely,
Larry

I looked at the shocks/struts and they looks to be pretty easy to RR

that is used. Can someone give me some details about how to deal
with the springs? On other cars I would put a jack under the center

Buy the Bilsteins. You can probably get a good deal from
autohausaz.com Unless you car has a lot of rust, you should be able
to reuse the bolts and nuts, but it is not a bad idea to buy new if
you want. The new ones to NOAT come with the dust cover. I was ablt
to buy the dust covers directly from Bilstein, but they did not have
a listing. SO if you search the archives, there is a post form me
with the bilstein prat number for the dust covers. NO locktite needed
as long as you tighten the bolts reasonably.

I have done it with Rusty's loaner Klann compressor, and without.
Since you have done it before with a jack, i'd say do it without the
compressor, and with the jack. You may want to replace the rubber
upper mount. I didn't but had to a year later. (with the jack)

Bilsteins are lifetime warranty, and give the car the ride it was
built to have. Anything else will not ride right.

Thanks Peter -- Excellent description! I already have the rubber boot
that covers the strut shaft - bought them a while back but I knew the
difficulty I'd have compressing a strut in good condition and decided to
wait. Plus I need to get the clamps to hold them n place. Are the
clamps Special? or can I use a large metal hose clamp?

The rubber jounce bumper has broken from the top and now slides up and
down the exposed shaft.

I also plan to replace the upper bumpers. Thanks again for the
excellent description... BTW, I plan to use job 32-0615.

Sincerely,

Replace the boots, it's imperative that you keep them in good shape.
Otherwise road dirt chews up the top seal and the strut dies prematurely.

You can easily change them by jacking the car up and putting it down
on jack stands under the control arm in the cut-out near the ball
joint. The weight of the car will keep the spring in place. You can
then unbolt the strut, pull it down, and remove if.

If there are any cracks in the visible rubber of the mounts, or they
thump on bumps, replace them. Reminds me to check mine, I put new
struts in but that was a while back and there is more noise up front
than I like.

Put the new boot and bumper on the new strut and put it in. Quite
easy other than aligning the bolts and the dirt and grease.

Have a care not to damage the wiring for the anti-lock brakes, and
don't forget to take the clip for the wires off the old strut and put
it on the new one before installation.

It is vastly easier to replace the upper bearing while you have the
strut out. Once the strut expands, they are a real pain to compress
unless you want to take them out completely to change the bearing.

2014-03-01 Thread Dan Penoff
Buy the clamps from MB. They're cheap. And you'll probably find that they're
not clamps - they're really for keeping the bottom portion of the boot open and
in place over the strut, if they're like the ones for the later model cars.

I just put new boots, buffers and clamps on my 97 SL500. The clamps are like
big tie wraps with tabs that project out in four directions. You put the boot
on and then put the clamp on the body of the strut near the bottom of the boot.
The tabs that project out from the clamp fit in the last convolution of the
boot to keep it in place over the strut.

hold onto them with the intention of putting them on my 1975. That never
happened so they are available. If Peter doesn't want them they are up for

The gas pressure in a good strut requires some effort to collapse the

changes. I doubt your problem is a wheel. What you describe sounds
like an out of phase driveshaft. no known cure other than to send it
to the rebuilder in GA (but there is probably one in the LA area) or
to take it out and put it back together in the next spline (up to 33
times) until you get it in the right spline. Jim Cathey built a
lathe to find the sweet spot in his driveshaft, but most of us don't
have space and an adequate junk pile to salvage the needed parts from
to do that.

Another option is to buy a junkyard driveshaft and try it until you
get a good one. (I used this option) I lucked out the first time.

The moral of the story is to never let anyone buy yourself to touch
the driveshaft. In my case, some monkeys took it out without my
permission. They of course decided to slide the splines apart.

That's what Kaleb should do; get an AP license. Then send his M/Bs to the

Who knows, a few years from now we might enter a Delta airliner and

Just a thought. I had a Mercury Sable with similar symptoms. It turned out
to be a bad shock absorber. That shock worked fine for large motions but it
allowed a small amplitude undamped oscillation, probably excited by a small
tire imbalance when the wheel speed matched the suspension resonant
frequency. This continued over several sets of tires until I changed the
shock.

now if I can only find the whole car vibration at 75 MPH,  must be a bent
wheel as I have had four or five sets of new tires on it over the years
and now have replaced flex disks and the driveshaft bearing hangar and
rebuilt the tranny and it still vibrates.  Or a bent driveshaft I guess.
Half shafts seem OK.  Might be time to spring for the 15 Bundt cake

[MBZ] Testing OM603 head for cracks

2014-03-01 Thread Max Dillon
Dieselvolk,

A new chapter has begun in the never-ending saga of the head replacement on my
'87 wagon.

I finally removed the first replacement head, #20 casting, because of a problem
with a hydraulic lifter bore and because the cooling system would remain
pressurized overnight, following the rare occasions when I drove the car.

This head was supposedly tested for cracks by our best local machine shop.

I was really hoping to find evidence that the head gasket had failed, but to my
inexperienced eye, it looks fine.

So I'm thinking of ways to test the head for cracks. If there is a crack which
allows exhaust gas into the cooling system, then if I pressurized the exhaust
manifold and immersed the head in water, bubbles from any cooling passage would
indicate a crack, no?

How much pressure will the exhaust valves hold? Any clever ideas for sealing
them closed? I was thinking of using wax, but the melting point is too low.

The factory test requires a special plate bolted to the block side of the head,
and then the cooling passages are pressurized to 15 psi and the head is
immersed in water heated to 80 degrees C.

I've also thought about fabricating my own plate from wood.

Re: [MBZ] transmission rebuilding bad vibrations

2014-03-01 Thread Hendrik and Fay

ooohh that would drive me nuts.
My truck had that sort of thing going on, new steer tires and everyhting
is good but seeing that you have had tires replaced, we can discount that.
Have you checked your wheel bearings, I suppose you would have at some
stage in 13 years.

Wheel alignment?
I would be inclined to remove the drive shaft or at least securely put
the back end on axle stands and get up to the magic 75-80. Actually
perhaps put it up on stands and see, if the vibration is there, removed
drive shaft, if vibration is gone, drive shaft is out of balance.

Perhaps you hit a gutter a bit hard and bent something?
Things like worn bushes would not be culprit as they would get worser
and worser with age.
That's the strange thing, usually if it is caused by worn parts, it
would get badder.
Feeling a vibration is pretty useless as the vibration is transferred
through the car.

so maybe that joint. feels like it is under the console or seat. Seems like
maybe 120hz at 75mph. vibration, not much sound. stops again above 80.

I have driven it that way since 2001. nobody can figure it out, but most
mechanics never test drive at that speed.

Read the NYT article Jon put up about the way airlines are forming
today - very sad. But with wages and costs and shareholder demands,
etc this is the logical end of things, literally the end. Things
cannot continue as they have in the past. While the immediate present

now if I can only find the whole car vibration at 75 MPH, must be a bent

rebuilt the tranny and it still vibrates. Or a bent driveshaft I guess.
Half shafts seem OK. Might be time to spring for the 15 Bundt cake
