For nearly 30 years I have been using ethanol blend gasoline [petrol]. I began seeking it out and have used it almost exclusively for 25 years. I tried it way back then and discovered the carburetor maintenance on my cars went _way_ down with the blend. Since then, I have used it for cars, lawn mowers, chainsaws, line trimmers, etc. Some of the mowers have repeatedly sat for 6 to 8 months with fuel in the tank. I often mix a stabilizer (Stabil initially, more recently Sea Foam) with the two stroke - but not always. In those 25 years I cannot blame the fuel for even one problem with any of the engines. Zero. Yet there are a lot of people who claim lots of problems caused by ethanol. I don't understand why my experience is _so_ different. All these tales of woe are making me nervous - yet my experiences suggest I should keep doing what I have been. -- Philip, puzzled. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Ha ha +1 for that one. Wonder how they feel about me buying a screen for an iphoney off ebay Speaking of printers, the other day I had job that involved taking a load of stuff to the rubbish dump. In amongst all the crap was a HP printer, which looked OK so I took it home. Fired it up and all the lights where on but the paper was not feeding properly, so I pulled it apart and some kid must dropped a safety pin in there. Right O now the paper was feeding properly but nothing was being printed, hmmn me thinks, the cartridges must have dried out, a quick search indicates that standing them in hot water may clean em out. So I give that a whirl and sure enough we have printing but it's still not 100% but I am just keeping it as a spare for now. Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol
Here's a better explanation of the test suggested previously which is simply based on the affinity of alcohol for water; no complex chemistry involved. "HOW TO TEST FUEL FOR ETHANOL *To determine if ethanol is in the gas: * * On a test tube or olive bottle six or seven inches long, make a permanent line about two inches from the bottom. * Fill with water to this line, then fill the tube to the top with gasoline. * Cover the tube, agitate it, and let it stand. The ethanol and water will mix and separate out together. If the water level appears to have increased, the fuel contains ethanol and should not be used. Ethanol percentages of less than 5% can sometimes give a reading below the line. Therefore, any deviation in the water line indicates the presence of ethanol and should serve as a basis for rejecting the fuel. *Get a reusable tester for only $15! * *http://www.autofuelstc.com/fuel_testing.phtml * *Gerry * On 4/18/2014 10:46 AM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: How much ethanol is in diesel fuel You bozos need to start a gasoline affinity group. If it rides "hard" (feels like the axle is welded to the frame) that is caused by one or both failed spheres. From: Meade Dillon Date: April 17, 2014 2:49:10 AM EDT To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 300td suspension fluid Reply-To: Mercedes Discussion List Hi Rick, Dragging rear at rest is probably the control valve, which is allowing the base pressure to bleed off. After you shut off the engine, open the SLS reservoir to watch the return line outflow. If it keeps on dripping with no end until the rear sags, the control valve is your culprit. Recently read on the peach parts forum about a member who has put together a rebuild kit with replacement o-rings. Worth a try I think. IIRC there are five o-rings in the valve in later versions. Max Dillon, Charleston SC thanks, Max I may very well have a problem with the valve too BUT the fact that the RIDE is like a washboard is indicative of bad accumulators, is it not? and i may be leaking oil into the system from the seal on the back of the SLS pump in the engine i sort of need to fix everything, i suspect (again) at least the hoses are all ok remember i abuse this thing often towing 1500 lbs on a trailer xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] OT - Sondy Tale
Yep, another Sondy Tale. THE RESEARCH PAPER By Wilton Strickland In February, 1978, when I left California for my assignment as Director of Engineering at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland, I had just completed the seminars portion of Air Force Air Command and Staff College (ACSC), an intermediate level professional military education program of Air University, but I had not completed the research paper, an "Aerospace Power Study," required for graduation. Most of the research and the basic writing were fairly well done, but I needed to finish a final draft with proper footnotes and a complete and correct bibliography, produce a properly typed copy and present it to the University. The small library at Sondrestrom was very inadequate for my needs to complete the paper. Meanwhile, there was a formal, two-week short course, "Air Force Base Civil Engineer," at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, that I had wanted to attend for a couple of years. If I could wrangle an assignment to the course, I could have complete access to the outstanding library at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and easily get the research paper completed during my time there. I called the school and quickly arranged to attend the course in April. I also called the Base Civil Engineer (BCE) at George AFB, CA, my former duty station, and got his approval to ask his secretary, Felly Elarmo, a mighty fine lady and absolutely the best typist I've ever known, to type the finished document for me in a format meeting the Air University requirements. Felly agreed to do the typing for me, and I departed Sondy aboard a New York Air National Guard C-130 on a Saturday morning in mid-April to attend the Civil Engineer Course and arrived at the NY Guard's home base at Schenectady, NY, in early afternoon. (In the taxi between the Schenectady base and the Albany Airport to catch a flight to Dayton, OH, I had a very short "strange" or "funny" experience. Back at Sondy, I had been deeply engrossed in studying Danish for nearly two months, and was already able to engage in simple conversations in Danish. I suddenly realized, though, that I was trying to understand the "Danish" on the upstate NY taxi dispatcher radio.) At the Wright-Patterson Library, I quickly and easily found the references I needed and, in my room at night and on the weekend, wrote a final draft of the paper, including appropriate footnotes, bibliography and much cutting and pasting/taping. (Remember that this was before the proliferation of personal computers.) I also called Felly to coordinate the typing work and told her that I planned to arrive at her office at George AFB, CA, at 0730 on the following Friday after finishing the classes at Wright-Patterson. Meanwhile, I learned that, though the last class for the Civil Engineer Course was on Thursday afternoon, I was required to attend a graduation ceremony on Friday morning for "The General's" graduation speech and presentation of certificates. Immediately after the last class at about mid-afternoon on Thursday, I talked to the School Commandant, a colonel whose name I don't remember, about the possibility of getting my completion certificate and departing for California immediately. I told him that I was stationed in Greenland, had not seen my wife and children for more than two months and needed to get that research paper typed on Friday in California and head back to Greenland on Sunday. I assured him that, having heard many graduation speeches, I already knew what The General was going to say and proceeded to cite some of the typical words of inspiration often used in such speeches. The colonel opened a desk drawer, shuffled through the sheath of signed certificates and handed mine to me, saying, "Don't tell anybody else that you're leaving early." I assured him that I would not say a word about it to anybody, that I'd be gone in well less than an hour and that nobody else would notice or care that I was "missing." I arrived at Felly's office the next morning at 0730 as planned. She and her boss, the BCE, had cleared the day for her to work exclusively on my paper, which she finished by about mid-afternoon. I have never seen a more impressive job of perfect typing. Having done the work during her normal duty day, Felly did not expect any additional payment for her outstanding work well beyond the call of duty, but I gave her what I thought at the time was a reasonable bonus or gift of appreciation, but viewed now via 36-year retrospect, what I gave her was embarrassingly inadequate. I mailed the completed document on Saturday morning, and, after another day or so at home with my wife and two of the children, I left California again for the return trip to Sondy on Sunday afternoon and arrived back there on Monday via Schenectady and a New York Air National Guard C-130. A few weeks later, I received an ACSC Certificate of Completion and a

Correction: You didn't kill any squirrels, you don't know if they died. My parents live on the rural/urban divide near a power line access road where people like to drop off the rodents they trap. My parents backyard birdfeeders can support birds plus up to 3 squirrels, after 3 squirrels they destroy the feeders and starve the birds. We've learned this over the years after many "squirrel proof" feeders were ruined. So now when the 4th squirrel shows up it gets dispatched and the local scavengers eat well. I don't know about Oregon, but in Michigan, either you bought it at a marina or it's "E10", which can sometimes go as high as E15. Michigan, Indiana and Ohio all have no requirements for pump labeling. I just checked, in Oregon, if there's 1.5% or more of ethanol, the pump must have an ethanol content sticker on it. I'd trust the sticker on the pump more than I'd trust the station employees. If you ask the guy who takes your money for minimum wage, he'll just tell you the first thing that pops into his head. "Make a mark on a (graduated) test tube about 2 inches from the bottom and fill it with the gasoline to be tested. Top the test tube with water, shake it and allow to stand. If the gasoline contains ethanol, the level of the solution will rise, as ethanol is absorbed by water. This would prove the presence of ethanol in the gasoline." http://www.rocketswag.com/car/Ethanol/How-To-Test-For-Presence-Of-Ethanol.html Amoco white gas used to be the best gasoline since it was nearly pure octane and needed no lead or other additives. It was costly to refine and the price reflected that cost. Not sure if Amoco premium is still "white gas" since blue color has been added. Nevertheless, it works well in my small engines and there is no residue at the beginning of the next season. Unfortunately there is no longer any available locally. Squirrels can be very tasty when cooked properly. We shot them and ate them during WW-2 when meat was almost non-existent. I seem to remember my parents cooking them with sassafras root and other local herbs. We seem to have a balance of nature which controls the squirrel and varmint population around here since a pair of foxes periodically "harvest" the squirrels, rabbits, mice, and seem to chase away the raccoons and possums, at least temporarily. We sometimes hear the rabbits squeal when the foxes make a killing. Gerry TIP: Deoxit D5 seems to be a remarkable cleaner and (lubricator?) for locks. I thought I had stripped the first lock on which I used it because the key turned so easily. It's long term effect remains to be seen. On 4/18/2014 12:49 AM, dsereta...@yahoo.com wrote: Yes. Re: [MBZ] ULSD now Ethanol
A Shell station recently built nearby has one pump off to the side which is labeled "ethanol free", slightly higher price. Lots of folks filling up boats, gas cans, etc use it. I suspect it is pulling from the underground tank that all the premium pumps pull from, wouldn't make sense to have a separate tank. Re: [MBZ] Roadside belt fun
Great idea, have old belt for my wagon "in the boot" such as it is. For some reason, when I replaced the belt on this car 28k miles ago, I threw that belt away. Root cause of all this is a leaky power steering pump, which is dripping hydraulic fluid for the ASD on the belt. I've had a pump rebuild kit on the shelf for several years now, need to get off my butt and fix those leaks...
