Hi Bob,
Do the background noise chips work effectively? I've never talked to anyone who
had a hearing aid that worked very well if at all in noisy environments.
Several people on the HOH forums say that European made hearing aids have
bigger telecoils and the whole aid is bigger. American aids are smaller because
Americans are more concerned with appearance, according to them.
The European aids supposedly work better as well.
The aids I have are Arial II AV MM Omni. The company was failing and Starkey
bought them. From the first day one of the aids would beep every 5 to 7 seconds
unless it was turned very low. All 3 people at the sellers office tried to fix
it; all to no avail. By the time they gave up on it, they said the warrantee
had run out. I wouldn't recommend Omni's to anyone, and I'm not sure I would
recommend Starkey. The first hearing aid I had was a Starkey ITE and it was
worse than useless. soon the volume control quit and the seller ruined it while
trying to fix it. Of course, that was 40 years ago and Starkey may be better
now.
I'm thinking of getting Phonak (Swiss) or one of the other European aids, and
it might have to be ITPs (in the pocket) since these BTEs are getting less
effective at full volume.
Thanks for the information.
Gerry

During the 20 years from 1995 to 2015 there was average yearly
enrollment of 30,000,000 grade school (grades 1 to 8) students
enrolled in U.S. schools. During that same period 168 people were
killed in school shootings, and this ignores the number enrolled in
high schools.
That means the percent of grade and high school students killed was
something much less than 0.05% of students killed.
Banning personal weapons in the hopes of saving that 0.05% is
such a silly idea, it makes one wonder if its advocates might have
ulterior motives.

What capability are you looking for? On/off at set times each

Dansguardian is the software I use for browser content filtering.
It could be setup for a wifi hotspot, but I don't think it comes

[MBZ] Aircraft sighting

2015-03-05 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Sunday evening, driving along the tollway from i75 to orlando, I
spied a large aircraft going low and slow straight at us, apparently
navigating by tollway. (VFR) From a distance I could not make out
much, but silhouette and flight characteristics seemed similar to a
B-17 limping home to england during WWII. I kept thinking, Naaa
can't be, then wondering if I was hallucinating or in a time warp.

I was sure it had to be a piston engine plane, because of the speed.
As we closed eventually I could make out 4 engine nacelles, so the
thoughts were the same...B17... Naaa, can't be... am I in a time warp?

It got close enough to identify, and my heart leapt! It REALLY was a B-17!

As it passed over to the left, it appeared to be in 8th Air Force
livery I could not make out the identification letters, but it was
definitely NOT Aluminum Overcast as it was painted camouflage.

Definitely a rare and exciting sighting, especially straight on.

I am not sure how many examples are in flying condition, but this was
one of em. I was so Awestruck, I did not determine if it was an E,
F, or G, but I am 90% positive it was not a G, because I believe i'd
have noticed the chin turret. I was focused on trying to read the ID
letters on the waist to determine the name.

So the new MamaML has a deal where you can talk to it and tell it
what to do. You push a button on the steering wheel then you tell
it to navigate to some address or place you have saved, or change
the radio or music on your pod or call someone or do various other
things. She has tried it but apparently they don't understand each
other too well yet. She finds the soul in the machine to be
pleasant enough, however, when it tells her what to do, unlike her
views toward me while doing the same. It has also assimilated her
phone into it so it can call people or send texts or do other things
phone-wise, and apparently can also suck in 10GB or 80GB of music to
its memory banks.

I find this whole thing somewhat disturbing yet intriguing.

It has a rotating pushbutton mouse joystick sort of thing too to
whiz around the screen if you don't want to talk to it. The
instruction book is about 400 pages long.

One thing for sure - law and regulation has lost sight of intention.
We are tied up in the underwear of law and regulation rather than
intent. The intent is... shall we morph this topic to
fill-in-the-blank?
Intention is: protection of all carried out by all.
Thanks.

During the 20 years from 1995 to 2015 there was average yearly enrollment of
30,000,000 grade school (grades 1 to 8) students enrolled in U.S. schools.
During that same period 168 people were killed in school shootings, and this
ignores the number enrolled in high schools.
That means the percent of grade and high school students killed was something
much less than 0.05% of students killed.
Banning personal weapons in the hopes of saving that 0.05% is such a silly
idea, it makes one wonder if its advocates might have ulterior motives.

Hearing aid info: I was born deaf due to my mother having measles in
1950. I only hear 40 % in my left ear, hardly anything in my right ear.
Therefore I grew up with a "box" hearing aid that I wore on my chest, clipped
onto my white sleeveless " muscle " undershirt. I hated summer cause I had
to wear another shirt over top to hold the hearing aid as well cover it. It
was the most powerful one made by Zenith powered by a 22 1/2 volt battery.
It wasn't til 1972 that Oticon from Denmark broke the barrier with the BTE

am an excellent lip reader & with my high IQ I went to normal high school
[popular too because of my athletic abilities & they accepted me] I finished
college in 3 1/2 years.

Siemens & Starkey are good brands as well as few othersStay away
from Miracle Ear cause they are a rip-off. Go to an accredited audiologists .
Today they have chips in the aids that cuts off background noise in
restaurants & the like. Also there are in the ear types that are really
good.Find somebody who'll let you try different types without having to buy it
outright. Do not rush into it because there are so many types now. Hope this

[MBZ] Global warming? No, Global ice age.

2015-03-05 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

The “brutal” winter is on the attack again, bringing sleet and heavy snow to
the mid-Atlantic region. Previous storms targeted the deep south including
Dallas, Texas, and several hammered New England. By March 4, Boston was just 2
inches away from hitting an all-time record for snow, Boston.com reported.

It’s a reality more in keeping with media warnings from the 1970s than today’s
arguments about global warming.

Then, CBS anchor Walter Cronkite, the dean of American journalism, was warning
about an "ice age." Cronkite cited scientific claims that the Earth was cooling
and "the full extent of the new ice age won't be reached for 10,000 years."

That's completely different from the media's line today that global warming is
settled sciencesnip

Re: [MBZ] OT: FCC & Net Neutrality

2015-03-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I have two choices for ISP, Comcast or Verizon. Comcast offers faster service
but requires me to pay a $200 "setup fee" for which they'll do exactly nothing.
Nobody comes to my house, no wires are moved, nothing.
Verizon is a little cheaper but its also slower. Recently we've had trouble
with it getting so slow my phone was faster. Similar to Craig's situation while
Verizon actually provides the DSL line my service is through DSL Extreme. This
costs me a couple bucks extra a month but means I don't have to deal with
Verizon directly.
I complained and DSL Extreme got on Verizon's case. It turns out my DSLAM
(digital subscriber line access multiplexer) is overloaded. They moved me to
another DSLAM which is also overloaded but not as overloaded as the first one
and things have gotten better.
The problem is there are effectively zero consumer protections here. I'm paying
for 3Mb/s and if I get 2.5Mb/s thats adequate but there is in fact no bottom
limit. I could get 100Kb/s and as long as I'm connected Verizon is safe. Since
there are no consumer protections and effectively no choices since Comcast is
consistently rated one of the worst companies in the world, Verizon has no push
to upgrade infrastructure...

internet service at the church, including Wi-Fi. There are several benefits
to this but I'm concerned about inappropriate use, particularly by the young
folks. A little Google searching turned up SkyDog (no longer available),
BUC Tools box or router (looks promising), iBoss router, and several
Linksys routers that have parental controls.

Having zero first-hand experience (and knowing the vast and deep pool of
arcane expertise available on this list) I thought I'd solicit experience or

Re: [MBZ] AT Does not engage 1st

2015-03-05 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
You are correct. Sun Valley said to use Dexron. I figured they should
know what works and what doesn't. I have changed it at 25K intervals as
Sun Valley said that was needed to keep the warranty in place.

The warranty expired about 4 months before the shifting problem
started. Naturally. ;-\

I added Zmax but after ~1200 miles the shifting has not improved.

I have another 3000 miles before I get to the 25K change interval - at
that time I'll go to full synthetic ATF. we'll see if that helps -

If it occasionally works I'd guess varnish in the valves. IIRC you
don't drive a whole bunch. Assuming thats true and assuming you're not

Hello --
About 4 years ago I bought one of Rusty's rebuilt AT''s. It was
fine until about 3-4 months after the 2 year warranty expired when it
stopped engaging 1st. it occasionally works but mostly it doesn't. The
kick-down works perfectly for the 4-3 shift.

I asked the list when it 1st happened and rec'd a couple of
suggestions - the thing that baffles me the most is that it works for
4-3 but not for 2-1.

It's been a long time since I've been inside a AT and I can't think
of what might be the problem. Maybe dirt in the valve body? maybe a
bad solenoid or something?

any ideas?

Thx

They are still flying a daily scheduled trip north out of Yellowknife

The only thing that may bring this to an end appears to be a shortage of

Some years ago I got to fly on the world's highest-time DC-3 in
passenger service, from Hyannis to Nantucket, flown by
Provincetown-Boston Airways (PBA) It was a gorgeous plane with the
old-style big comfy seats, 2x2 and lots of legroom. I was disappointed
the flight was only 15min, I would have gone transatlantic on it!

it keeps on blowing the fuse in box 15, which, according to him, controls
the front dome light and doors and trunk combo lock.  I assumed than in

2015-03-05 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Mine is 39 years old. Odometer shows about 14K miles if my memory is
correct.
Cannot really tell you if it has gone around more than one time. Maybe,
or maybe not.
I have early records but nothing from the time shortly before I acquired
it in July 2005. Hard to believe I have had it just about 10 years.

Odometer showed 990 miles when I got it.
I don't believe that either of the 2 previous owners put many miles on
it so it might only have gone around the one time.
Runs fine so seems of little importance as I am not putting big numbers
of miles on it obviously.

Grant said, the feather trigger lets you modulate the hammering action from
a stroke every second to very fast. You start by setting the rivet in place
with a few slow strokes, then enough fast strokes to get it to the finished
state.

The 2X, 3X, 4X, etc. relates to the length of each stroke, hence the
"power" to mash ever increasing sizes and hardness's of rivets.

IIRC, boats often use larger rivets than I've dealt with in most of my
aircraft work, but they were often softer as well. I doubt that you need
more than a 3X rivet gun.

This is the gun I bought recently, and it works just fine:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/rivetset737.php?clickkey=1985735

It has everything you need except and air compressor and the rivets (which
you can find here:

The rivet gun with a "feather trigger" permits you to drive the rivet
without over driving it..

The "stun gun" body shop hammer used for cutting metal and such lacks the
finer control to drive rivets in aluminum..

I suggest you get some aluminum scraps that are as near the composition to
the boats material as you can get and practice driving rivets .. observe
what works, and what doesn't.. you also may want to moderate the air
pressure to the rivet gun to get the "stroke" you need to upset the rivet
properly..

Also important is the bucking bar you use to back the driver.. how you hold
it.. it's weight and surface all play into the compression of the rivet to
make it fill the hole and grip the pieces being joined..

HTH...

Have you ever watched "Icepilots" TV show about Buffalo Airways out of
Yellowknife?
They are still flying a daily scheduled trip north out of Yellowknife
with DC3's that are 70 or more years old.
The only thing that may bring this to an end appears to be a shortage of
aviation fuel.

I got my introduction into how badly we have treated native Americans and their
condition in Tuba City, AZ.

I had heard the requisite stories about alcoholism and unemployment on
reservations, but working with the Hopi Nation for a month, effectively
embedded with them, really opened my eyes to their plight and that of all
