Re: [MBZ] OT Netflix

2016-04-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It's all about compression. Uncompressed HD is around 150MB/s which is a
challenge even on a 2Gb connection. So they compress the hell out of it to get
it down your teeny pipe.

By comparison DVD is around 6Mb/s. Most cable TV is the same OTA (over the air)
is usually around 25Mb/s.

Ps after discovering lowes does not have any Bosch at all in stock at any store
I sent an inquire in at a local appliance dealer. They have them in stock and
they are $200 cheaper than Lowes. Guess that's where I will be going if I go
that route.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding dishwashers

2016-04-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I looked into learning some welding at our CC, you can't just take one
or two classes, you have to sign up for the certificate program and it
is like 2 years of classes. You learn a lot, but not what I want to do
though I might decide at some point. Being over 60 (just slightly!) I
could do it free. I guess I could just take the intro courses then walk
away on the rest.

My buddy wanted to take baking classes, he is really into baking, but he
ended up doing the whole program too, including internships serving food
and working in a chocolate shop (which he liked, a lot!, and so did
I!). When he signed up they made him take an English proficiency test,
he is retired pathologist but they said that didn't count they still had
to know he could reed and right engrish... he finally gave up arguing
with the instructors who could not read plain instructions on how to do
stuff, and what the science of certain cooking reactions is, and
generally trying to communicate with his classmates who had considerable
deficiencies. But he can make some wicked cakes, bread, ice cream, and
chocolates. I got him started brewing beer, he has become a fanatic
about that too.

I have become pretty good at sheetrocking and plaster repair but it is a
bit of hike to come help you out.

Do you ever wonder why people who advertise that whatever is wrong with
their item, is"easy to repair", don't just fix it so that they don't
have to tell you it has troubles?

I also wonder at people who advertise that they have spent an arm and a
leg repairing things on some old beater. I should think it would make
more sense to keep one's mouth closed.
Potential purchasers do not need to be reminded that old vehicles
require a lot of repair.

Well, Wilton needs a paint prep/ painter ‎not a welder, but perhaps someone at
the local community college that has a building trades program could help.

I was just using my son's vocational experience as a reference.

The community college in Los Alamos (aka UNM-Los Alamos) has welding
classes that are well attended. Perhaps that's the level at which Wilton

The much-maligned Windows 8 interface. In 10 it is relatively easy to
ignore, in 8 / Server 2012 it really gets in the way.

The active computers are older (2011/2-ish) enterprise equipment: a
couple Dell Latitudes, an HP desktop, a Dell tower. I believe they
are all 64-bit capable processors.

During the beta I also had W10 installed on my Dell netbook (mini 10v,
32-bit Intel Atom I think) and it ran okay, no worse than XP/7 - but
the screen driver died shortly after. If I were Jim I would have
resoldered it, but I am not Jim so it's been recycled. That was
definitely a hardware failure, it was a long time coming.

Best,
Tim

[MBZ] Washer parts again

2016-04-04 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Kaleb,
Does yours have the removable plate across the bottom? I've unscrewed/removed
mine and checked wiring, water/drain line connections, and in general cleaned
the dust/dirt out that gets underneath (like it does the refrig and stove).
Again, there might be some blockage somewhere. I was going to suggest Sears for
parts and diagrams. I got my Maytag from Sears and sometimes they have nice
parts diagrams. Also, sometimes if you call the parts center, they may have
more diagrams in house than what they've put online. They can be helpful if
they think they are going to sell you a part or two. Just a thought.
Best wishes and good luck,

[MBZ] Washer parts again

I did find my model on sears parts of all places, but not maytag, go figure.
It appears everything is under the washer and not accessible from the top.
Maybe I will try pulling it out and taking it apart from the bottom. These
do not appear to be nearly as repairable as other/older models.

So at what point is using a dishwasher more work than just washing the dishes
by hand? Granted theres only two of us but we rarely use the dishwasher. It
takes more time to fill the darn thing than it does to just wash 'em...
We've got a 30+ year old washer, I think its a Kenmore. Does a fine job, the
only time I ever needed to mess with it was the time Angie couldn't get the top
rack to close. I pulled the rack out and discovered she'd put a knife in it

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

2016-04-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Years ago I was building a video studio for my employer. We'd decided to paint
one wall green in case we wanted to do some chromakey work. I explained to the
guy that it was important that the wall be flat and the paint be
non-reflective.He spent half a day getting it flat, he finally made a sanding
block out of 4 feet of 2x6. You couldn't find an imperfection on that wall
anywhere. The paint was perfect too, he put on 3 coats in the second half of
the day and you couldn't see any lap lines or drips or anything. That guy was a
real expert.

I think it's 2008. Those from 2009 to the current date are in violation of
the emissions standards. Thus, those from 2009 to now should be bargains,
if you don't mind putting more NOx into the air than the standards since
2009 allow. They probably put out less than any of the old MB Diesels this

I pulled the rack out and discovered she'd put a knife in it
that was sticking out the back...

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers

Yes is does have the heating element and when opening the door the interior
steams a ton and is very hot. On all the stuff I have seen on line videos and
such with washers with this problem it seems to be a fairly simple fix which
involves taking apart stuff below the wash arms down to the chopper. All the
videos are if your typical maytag/whirlpool/kitchenaid. Mine is different. The
wash arm and all the stuff under it requires no tools to remove. Everything
snaps off and as far as I can go is down to a little filter like assembly (it's
not really a filter but just seems to catch big stuff). There is nothing else
to remove and no screws or covers to remove like other models I have seen so
whatever inside that may be plugged up appears you have to either replace the
whole pump assembly or take the thing out of the cabinet and take apart from
underneath.

Re: [MBZ] OT dishwashers now old houses

2016-04-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

That would have been a very cool house.

I restored/renovated an old Victorian (1884), was not a "high" Victorian
but still had some style. My neighbor around the corner still lives in
an 1850s Victorian that was pretty much all original inside except for a
1950s kitchen redo and a new bathroom she put in but the old original
bathroom is still there as is all the woodwork, plaster, etc. It had
some minimal electrical installed probably in the 20s, she had a few new
circuits run but that is all mostly "original" too. It is an amazing
gorgeous house. The town was full of them as the first "commuter"
railroad was built up to the town from Boston in the 1850s so wealthy
people bought lots there and built houses starting about that time
period. If you drive around the town you can see the original farm
houses from the 1600-1700s which had maybe 10 acres or so, then the
subsequent houses of different eras where the land was subdivided over
the next 300-400 years.

Right after I finished school and got a real job, a buddy said we should
go look at this row house in Charlestown MA (across the river from
Boston) that was up near the top of Bunker Hill. The first floor had
been carved up into 3 or 4 little rathole apartments but the 2nd and 3rd
floors were still pretty much original though they each had a kitchen
and bathroom installed at some point to make them separate apartments.
Guy wanted $70k for it, which was a fair chunk of change but running the
numbers it made some sense. The scheme was to keep the 1st floor apts
for some rental income while we redid the 2nd and 3rd floors into condos
we each would then have, live in one while redoing the other, then
moving into the new one, then redo the first floor and sell it as a
condo. Problem was there was no parking except on the street and it was
a bit rough area with all the Townies being ignernt so I passed. Fast
forward to present day, This Old House has redone buildings in that
area, and condos as we were going to do are going for $1M+. Sigh...

City wanted to sell it and couldn’t find a buyer for over two years. The price
in 1980 dollars was $40,000. It was in great physical shape and was a huge
space inside, with the main floor being pretty much one giant open room and the
lower level being separate rooms with a big kitchen in one of them.

Wife wouldn’t go for it. A few months later the city sold it to a developer
who made $150k condos out of it.

Boy I would sure love to hear some Wilton stories about restoring mansions. I

not Victorian, but it slips the mind what style they called it. Colonial maybe.
We could have picked it up for something like 60k, had the loan all lined out
etc but for whatever reason we didn't do it. It's main issues were pluming to
the upstairs bathroom.
Several years before that there was and old Victorian that was for sale for a
long time that belonged to a school teacher that died. At the time is was
pretty much original, had all original hardwood floors all thru the house,
original interior walls, bathrooms and such. I think it got down to like $85k
and was finally sold. This was in the late 90s when I knew nothing about buying
real estate. Whoever bought it completely gutted the interior. I mean
completely gutted, all interior walls torn out, everything. It went back on the
market I think they got foreclosed on or something. I went and saw it then. A
few years later it was back on the market after somebody had completely redone
it. We went and looked at it and it was priced in mid to upper 200s but the
floor plan inside was completely different, it was just like walking into a
brand new cookie cutter house. They totally ruined the charm of the house, it
was very very sad.

Some of them are getting scarce and expensive. The W140 clutch can be found
amor Behr (OEM) for around $100.
