There are some pistol safes that provide pretty-fast to access and a degree
of security, like SpeedVault:
https://www.amazon.com/s?field-keywords=SpeedVault

On body carry is best but maybe uncomfortable at home. The SpeedVault (I
prefer the pushbutton over fingerprint version) holds a full size pistol and
allows fast access, if properly sited. A determined kid could eventually
gain access but I have no children in the house.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cell foniness

2017-02-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes

PBS Evening news had a great segment a couple nights ago about how smart
phone apps (especially social apps) are designed to hook you and keep you
engaged. The example given was for some social app that has a little icon
at the top of the home screen for new messages. When you open the app,
that little icon makes you wait for a second or two and then "Bing!" you
have mail. The wait time builds anticipation and then you are rewarded
with the new messages (like playing a slot machine). This is Pavlov's dogs
and we are the dogs slobbering at the sound of the bell. There are many
other ways these apps are designed to suck us in and keep us looking at
them.

The interviewer asked the "expert" who helps design these apps what he does
to avoid falling for the hook; he only has the in-out tools on his phone
home screen, and all the social / addictive apps are put into folders, out
of sight, so that an extra effort has to be made to get to them. In-out
tools are things like the GPS map, which you use to get a specific thing
and then close it (i.e. you don't spend hours and hours scrolling through
maps).

The "expert" called this the race to the bottom of the brain stem. Similar
to advertising, these apps are using every lever they can to influence and
control.

I hope you were all wearing your AFDB's when you read this

Actually, that's 400 minutes air time. The calendar days are separate.
In addition, if you get the Double Minutes for Life (DMFL) card (I forget
the cost), you will get 800 minutes when you purchase 400. And then they
have bonus minutes available.

Last time I purchased calendar and air time, I purchased a 1 year card
with 1000 minutes, which was doubled to 2000 with my DMFL and got a 250
minute bonus for a total of 1 year calendar time and 2250 minutes. That
was $159.99 + taxes. 1 year and 400 minutes (undoubled) is 99.99 + about
$8-10 of taxes.

How much do extra minutes cost?

That varies. I think they are around $0.13/minute; half that with DMFL.

Who is the carrier or is that one where you just pay at a local

The carrier I have is Verizon. They have multiple carriers available in
New Mexico. That's probably the case in Florida, too. If you know the
carriers' exchange numbers or recognize the coverage maps, you can select
the carrier when you activate a phone.

Our current phone is in area code 505 with exchange 412, which is
Verizon. I have also had a phone with exchange 231, but I don't know
which carrier that was.

2017-02-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I originally posted, it appeared that i would need a different
phone to go to ATT. As I researched, I found out the ifone 4s is sort
of the 240D of schmardtfones. In later posts, I posted that I had found
out the ifone 4 would work on the att network with a different sim
card. I have some reservations yet, because it seems in some areas ATT
may use bands that are not available on the 4s, if only one band is
available. I don't know if a tower has only one band or may have
several bands available. If each tower has several bands it should be
fine.

Tar-jay has the sim cards for consumer cell and will install and
activate the phone. (which should include a factory reset as I posted
last night when I found out the 4s will work.) I have to go out that
way tomorrow am, so I will let them switch me over in the morning. As I
have calculated, When SWMBO is switched over, the 2 fones will cost
$35/mo and if I add #1 daughter, the 3 fones will cost $55/mo because of
adding more data for her. We might get by for 45 for many months.

It was roughly 12 hours between when i posted that it appeared that the
4s would work and when you claimed it was an hour before. That was 2 or
3 hours after the original post.

bigger than the spyder name. I got 2 - wide 6" blades. They have teeth
on both sides and one side is rounded with teeth on it. With that I
was able to cut out a wall from the inside with the sheeting, siding and

That includes free long distance. Roaming is either 2 units per minute or
1 unit per minute depending on the phone.

You buy minutes and calendar days of activation ahead. The $108 I quoted
is for 1 year and 400 minutes (units). With my Double Minutes for Life
card, that means 1 year and 800 minutes. Some phones are eligible for
Triple Minutes for Life.

You can use all the minutes at once or spread them out. Or save them for

[MBZ] 85 300d $1300 obo

2017-02-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
There was a very nice looking black 85 300d on Craigslist here locally
yesterday. It says it has 292k miles, was his grandmothers car and it has sat
since she died and needs to sell it. Photos looked really good. It is deleted
today before I had a chance to go look at it. Damn. This empty house from hell
has been screwing me out of tons of good deals lately.

My wife's (now mine) 4S has worked flawlessly since she got it, shortly
after they came out. It Just Works (TM). Battery life is nowhere near
what my Razr was, but other than that...

I did replace the battery in it some time ago, which is possible for mere
mortals to do. (Not on newer ones, they're glued together.) There went
$5. Smart phones eat battery, yum. Had she bought max storage instead of
not, she'd probably still be using it. But she loads hers up with
mega-crap...

I'm still running iOS 7, and have _not_ upgraded to 8 or 9. I don't know
of anybody who's said that they are glad they have done so, and plenty
who've said they wished they could go back. (Which is not possible. At
least, not without heroic effort.) So here I sit, smug and happy, surfing
the trailing edge again.

+1, Search around for an Android phone. Daughter's Motorola was $21 on
sale at Wal-Mart, we've got her set up on a $25/month plan with unlimited
calls and texts, and data that is 4G up to some limit and then after that
throttled to a lower speed. The phone is a mid-level phone, but it does
everything we need it to do in a nice package. We are all on low-cost
carriers that use the Sprint network, no problems there, but we don't go
out in the sticks very often.

I'm pretty much ready to replace SWMBO's iPhone with an Android phone,
she's struggling too much with the darn thing and I really don't have the
patience to figure it out anymore. I picked an iPhone for her thinking it
would be easier for a non-technical person, but now I regret spending all
that money on it.

Depart the iPhone, they're way expensive for what you get. A NEW

Subject: [MBZ] OT: cell foniness

I have been using (and getting ripped off by) verizon since 1999. I
think it is time to pull the plug. I've been paying $60/mo
Currently my usage is about 300 min and .5 mb data ( i use gas buddy
once in a while)

Consumer cellular,(CC) in spite of it tie to AA(L)RP seems to be a good
deal. It seems that ATT now has 4gLTE in the places I roam (mostly from
the yoopers to the Gu'f Coast) and CC uses att network.
AMAC.US has an associated Cell phone provider too, using verizon, but I
have been warned by RVers that if you ever might use tethered cell phone
for internet access, that provider will rip you a new one, so I am not
thrilled about that, as a tethered cell phone would be nice in the
yoopers area. They are a little higher than CC also.

CC is $22.50/mo for 1500 min and 30mb data.

it appears the ifone 4s I am using will work on ATT with their sim card
and a factory reset, but some bands in some areas may not work. I
believe the ifone4s will connect on the 3G, but not the 4GLTE, and it
has some of the ATT bands, but not all so I may end up with no service
if ATT is using a band not on the ifone 4S.

The obvious cure would be to spend $125 to 150 on a refurb/used ATT
ifone 5S, but I'd rather not have to spend that much money.

Its interesting how fast prices have come down. 3 years ago when I was on
Verizon I was paying $90/mo for 2GB of data and that included a 10% corporate

Now I'm paying $30/mo for 2GB of data with Republic. I should probably step

[MBZ] VW Scandal

2017-02-01 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I think this is an update to pervious stories.

Automaker, supplier will pay drivers of 3.0-liter diesel cars

Camille von Kaenel , E
News reporter
Published: Wednesday, February 1, 2017

Volkswagen AG has agreed to pay drivers of 3.0-liter diesel-engine vehicles
with defeat devices at least $1.2 billion to buy back or fix their cars.

Bosch Corp., a German supplier involved in the manufacturing of the defeat
devices the automaker used to cheat emissions standards, also agreed to
contribute at least $276 million to the settlement. It did not accept
wrongdoing or liability but decided to participate in the settlement to
focus on its own "transformative" process.

The latest Volkswagen deal follows an earlier $10 billion settlement with
drivers of 2.0-liter diesel-engine vehicles. Volkswagen will have spent
more than $20 billion to address the aftermath of its emissions cheating
scandal, including civil and criminal penalties, payments to drivers, and
funding for projects to counter environmental harm.

If the automaker does not end up finding a fix for all the 80,000 or so
3.0-liter diesel vehicles and getting it approved by U.S. EPA and the
California Air Resources Board, it could end up paying more than $4 billion
to drivers, , according to court documents filed yesterday.

Drivers of the 2009-2012 VW Touareg and the 2009-2012 Audi Q7 are eligible
for a buyback. Owners of newer vehicles for which regulators expect a fix —
the 2013-2016 VW Touareg, 2014-2016 Audi A6 and A7 quattro, 2014-2016 Audi
A8 and A8 L, 2014-2016 Audi Q5, 2013-2015 Audi Q7, and 2013-2016 Porsche
Cayenne — will get the full repair and a payment.

A federal judge in San Francisco will hold a hearing on Feb. 14 to grant
preliminary approval to the deal.

Re: [MBZ] Good Deal on an Mustang - I mean SL...

2017-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Owning a 97 model of this car I can assure you that it's quite easy to work on
once the air cleaner is removed.

Having the exact same engine setup in two W140 chassis cars, I can also attest
to the ease of servicing with the R129 (SL500) versus the W140s. Since the
convertible sits closer to the ground you're not leaning over nearly as much as
you have to with the W140s.

There is plenty of room on both sides of the engine in the convertible as well.
While I haven't had the need yet, I can see where the engine mounts on the
convertible are far more accessible than on the W140 chassis cars.

I'm not sure why there's a problem with the iPhones, maybe the newer ones. When
I switched to CC years ago, I had two Motorola flip phones. Later when the 2
towers went, I purchased two iPhone 3s on ebay for around $35.00 each. CC send
me new sim cards, helped me make the switch, and get me connected. They will
even help you with the phones features, even if you didn't purchase it from
them. When my daughter gave me her iPhone 4, CC helped make the switch
effortless. I don't use a lot of the phone features. I can get calls, text,
internet/web, take pictures/movies, etc. Not sure what else I'd need or use. I
say this having NO experience with an Android phone or knowing anyone that has
experience with an Android phone. Like our cars (diesel or gas, new or old),
whatever suits you and you like is what you should use.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cell foniness

2017-02-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I had a 5, it was fine, then just after warranty expired the battery started to
push the screen out of the phone. Apple replaced both the battery and the
screen for free which tells me they knew they had a problem but didn't really
want to admit it.
The sleep/wake button stopped working after about a year of ownership, Apple
said it wasn't "vital for operation" so they wouldn't replace it. A couple
months after the battery was replaced they had a recall for the sleep/wake
button...
One thing I really did like about the 5 is that the charge and headphone ports
were right next to each other so when using it plugged into the aux jack in the
car it would sit nicely in a cup holder. My 2 MotoXs have the charge and
headphone ports at opposite ends. Our Dodge truck's fold down cup holder has a
nice groove where the phone fits well when cabled up, by Jetta does not.

My biggest complaint was that it did not work well with my hands free
device in the car. Worked fine with the built-in setup in my truck but
not with the clip on unit I used in my cars.
Everytime I got in the car, it started playing music through the hands
free device. I could hit the pause button on the unit to stop the
elevator music but could not find a way to stop it from doing it.
I had a Motorola Roadster unit. Thought that might be the problem so I
bought a new and different hands free device - cannot recall the brand -
but it did not change anything.
Both of these units work fine with the new iphone. The Motorola worked
fine with the iphone 4.
Searched online for answers and it became apparent that it was a common
problem and no solution appeared to be available.

The learning curve for ios is pretty steep, but I believe the android is
just as steep or steeper. At this point, I will stay with the ifone 4
because i have it, it cost me nothing, it works without problems, it
synchs with my MBP, and I am familiar with a few of its functions.

I am not against android, but I am completely unfamiliar with it and
based on the learning curve for the ifone, I really don't want to go
through the learning curve for android.

I have no interest in the latest and greatest fone or software. I have
been on the bleeding edge, but now live on the trailing edge. I like it
here better. It is cheaper, maybe less exciting, but I don't need the
excitement of new software that is buggy, taking stuff back because it
does not work etc.

between a motorloa and a huwai fone? (or other chinee brand) None I
can tell! I used the last real Motorola up until last May. (Yes, it
was still made in China, but it was designed in IL when the Motorola
cell phone was an American company) At least Samsung is made in Korea.

The ifone camera is great, and it is nice to be able to use gasbuddy
once in a while. The rest of the crap is just excess baggage. I've
done more research and it appears the ifone4 is pretty much a world
fone, but will not connect to the LTE stuff. For my .5 mb/month of
data, i doubt that makes much difference. It also uses wifi when present."

As I said, when Motorola was a US company, I bought their phones. Now
that it is just another chinee brand, designed in china made in china,
whats the difference? Apple is still a Merkin company, and foxconn is
talking about building a plant in the US of A.

Aside from that, the ifone 4s I have cost me $0.00, zip, nothing, (nada
en espanol) so how is that more expensive than a cheep chinee android?

My MotoX was $399, its bigger than an iphone5, has more memory a
better battery and I probably won't have to have it repaired TWICE
under a warranty that Apple extended because of defects in the iPhone 5...
Angie has a MotoE which was $99, other than not having a flash its
every bit as good as the iPhone 5, better if you count the fact that
it uses a standard USB interface and has an SD card slot.
I find it strange that you're so hard on Asian car makers but cling to
your Chinese made iPhone.
My first gen MotoX was made in Texas. I replaced it last fall when the
USB port died, if the USB port still worked I'd still be using it.

Curley, go with Consumer Cellular and you won't be sorry. Tell them I
recommended you and I get a credit. I've had CC for over 10 years. I
switched from Verizon. I purchased two iPhone 3s from eBay (one for
me, one for my wife). CC send me the sim cards for free, walked me
through the setup, etc. CC has great customer service. I just get the
basic plan as I don't use cell phones much. I also get my AARP
discount. I've now changed to an iPhone 4 (daughter gave me her old
phone) and the switch of phones was completely painless. Yes, they use
ATT lines. I get great service everywhere I've been and that includes
the mountains in Appalachia, except at home as I live down in a valley
with lots of hills and trees so I only get 2 bars of service. I can
still use it at home ok as long as I don't walk around while talking.

Just some personal experience.

MetroPCS would be ideal, as they offer unlimited phone and data for
$30/month, but they use tmobile, and the coverage is 2G or non existent
for most of the country.

Sprint still only works if you are on or near an interstate, so that is out.

Does anyone have thoughts, pertinent info, or an ATT ifone 5s you'd sell
cheap?
